View Full Version : Stock 335xi Sedan Rims
DrivinCrazE 10-15-2007, 06:28 PM The stock rims on a 335xi sedan are 4 - 17 x 8.0 (Style 159) 225/45R-17
I think these are... ugly and want to put on the Star Spoke (Style 189) 18 x 8.0 front, 18x 8.5 rear; 225/40R-18 front, 255/35R-18
Will these fit?
At a minimum, I would like the optional rims (Style 162) which I know will fit.
Anyone looking to trade for brand new rims and tires + $$???

It will work. I have the same size tyres on my car, and it came from the factory like that.

do you have an xi as well?
well the sidewall diameter is a difference of .75 mm. However, we don't know if the wheels are of the same weight. Hopefully they are as the difference in rotating mass between the front and rear could be detrimental to the differentials. I'm sure BMW researched this well enough if they thought that staggering wheel width and tire size is ok on awd cars as long as the sidewall diameters are within a certain range of similarity.
I know that if you get a flat on an STI, you have to replace all the tires since if just one is off, then the dccd and the lsd can be ruined.

OUCH! I hope for xi owner's sake it is not the case on BMWs. A 1200$ puncture, now that is something :eek:.

What matters is the overal diamater and nothing more. You can run staggered setups on XI's. It is an option from the factory. You could run staggered on the STI as well. It all has to do with the overall diameter which is 25 inches plus or minus a tenth.
Regarding the STI - that is just wrong. Someone is selling you on tires. I had a highly modified STI that had multiple repairs on several tires. That would mean that you would either need to rotate your tires once a week or replace all the tires every 5000 miles - especially on the 255/40/17 Azenis I was running. I sold mine with 36,000 miles and never had a single problem with the DCCD. I do miss that car (Off topic) - GT30 turbo, 816cc injectors, Perrin FMIC, ecuTEK tuned to 340WHP and 350WTq on a Mustang - 450 crank HP MMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

your conversion from a mustang to crank seems off. 340whp with the typical 17-20% drivetrain loss at most would 408-410 bhp. I know mustangs read low but now that is just plain old ludicrous.
I think you misunderstood my statement. Say you have three tires all at 50%tread and then u have an irreparable damaged tire. If that one is new, even if it is the same tire, it is going to track differently and be somewhat taller with new tread. That in itself could ruin a single axle lsd over time. Your car was brand new in STI terms at 36K miles.

I had issue with my traction control on my old e36 when I replaced just 2 tires instead of all 4 (same size and all except different brand), it kept trigerring and throttling down the fuel to the engine thinking there was wheel slippage (was only evident on on ramps). So I wouldn't be surprised if what PathosRx is saying is true, although not sure if all 4 have to be the same. If that is the case you might be better off "artificially wearing down" one new tire than buying an extra 3 ;).

No, what you said is that if you get a flat you need to replace all four. That would be ludicrous. I would agree with you that if you have more than 50% of tread wear gone, and need to replace one tire, you would be better off replacing all four or finding another single tire used as that could be a problem long term. The age of the STI does not matter. I went through four summer sets and 2 winter sets in that time as I tracked my car often, so I know well what you need to look for as far as wear.
Sorry for off topic again. The Mustang that it was tuned on read really low. Stock STI's read typically between 210 and 220 - mine stock on that particular day pulled 212 (crank as you know 300hp). So 450 is conservative on the numbers as the drivetrain loss on this particular dyno was much more than 20%. Shiv's Dyno Dynamics dyno used to read very similar to this one, just slightly higher. People with the same mods as mine were pulling 360-380 whp on dynojets and around 400whp on dynapaks. As an example I watched a 996TT dyno at 285 whp on this particular dyno the same day mine was tuned. - This is why I think comparing dynos is utterly useless.
