My clutch sticks in the down position every so often. Everyone I've spoken to tells me it's the clutch master cyl & slave. I have a good mechanic but his rates are outrageous. He's quoted $300 for parts and $350 approx. for labor, to replace the master and slave cyl. $750 for a master and slave cyl?? Does this seem reasonable?

I can't swing $750 right now, so I'm thinking of just driving until it gets worse. Does anyone know if this problem can linger on an intermittent basis, or does the problem go from intermittent to major problem quickly. And is there a safety issue with driving with an impaired master/slave cyl?

Thanks very much

According to Realoem, master $185, slave $80. Replacing the slave is relatively easy, bolted to bell housing underneath car. The master, however is hard to get to. It is under and behind the brake booster. Then there is bleeding the system. He really is not that far out of line. How are you as a mechanic?
