View Full Version : ** VIDEO ** e46 m3 smg vs. c32 amg
Sticky 03-22-2003, 11:11 PM Thanks to ///Mwannabe for hosting Video: http://www.maximumgeek.net/downloads/movies/E46SMGM3versusC32AMG.zip
Well at long last, I had the battle I had been waiting for. I called out FrankW to race his c32 vs. my m3, but he kind of ignored my post (*cough* pussy *cough*). However, av2 responded back to me that he would love to run my m3. We both agreed it would be good fun and we agreed on a time and place to meet. Leemos also came along for the fun with his friend.
We met up at 10:30 and a2v was there with his beautiful c32, and also his friends c32 who I remembered from the track. I had met him before at cali speedway during drag racing. His c32 has an evosport pulley. We decided I would race the stock c32 first, and then the modified one later.
Race 1: This if from a roll, and the c32 gets a slight jump, due it's large amount of torque. Into second we are really neck and neck, and in third I pull slightly. Into fourth I pulled a little bit more. I was shocked to say the least, as was a2v. We both agreed on me pulling up top by about 1 car.
Race 2: From a stop, I get a good jump of about a car due to launch control. The m3 seems to be able to launch with less spin than the c32. That car length stays through second, and into third and fourth I pull some more and it ends up at about 2.5 cars I would say.
I was very suprised, as I really expected to lose. av2 also asked me if I was stock, because he had raced his friends m3 before and beat him, but his was stick. I am not sure what to say, as I was amazed I was able to pull from a roll, since that is the c32's strength.
I would like to thank av2 for coming out and racing, it was a lot of fun. We went for rides in each others cars, and both remarked about how we considered purchasing our respective cars. We both decided that each car has it's strengths, and both are amazing machines. Was a lot of fun, nice meeting you and your friend.
Sticky 03-22-2003, 11:19 PM These are the details of the race with the modified c32.
Now, I wish I had the modified c32 race on video, but my friend skrewed up when taping. He set the camera to record to memory and not to tape. Oh well
We raced the same way as we did with the stock c32, from a roll, and then from a stop. This c32 had just an evosport pulley.
Race 1 from a roll:
We both go and are literally neck and neck. Into second we are both still even. Into third I would say we are still even with me maybe being slightly ahead. Into fourth I would say I was about a half car ahead. We shut down at 140.
Race 2 from a stop:
I use launch control and we both launch, and he gets about a half car off the launch. He has wider tires and 19 inch bbw lm's which made for a wider contact patch than the stock c32. This distance stays all the way until into then end of 3rd gear when I creep up a bit. Into fourth it is basically the same, and we shut down.
I lost the race from a stop, the added torque from the pulley swap and the wider tires on this c32 made a big difference. That c32 is a very fast car.
Basically what we learned form this is that a c32 and m3 are very close in straight line performance. Basically it would go back and fourth as each person mods. The c32 guy adds a pulley, the m3 guy has to get an exhaust and intake, then the c32 guy gets a chip, then the m3 guy gets headers, it never ends.
Here is a pic of the c32 with bbw lm's:
DINANISR3 03-22-2003, 11:30 PM i saw that C32 on BBS LM's at CAL speed way last time i went.. good race.. but sticky when are we gonna go at it? nothing better than some sibling rivalry..

As I said, anytime :)
There are 2 exact same c32's with bbs lm's. One has just a pulley, and one has a pulley + intercooler upgrade. I ran the one with the pulley and intercooler upgrade at the track, and he was faster by 1/10.
I might even run him tonight :devillook
///Mwannabe 03-22-2003, 11:34 PM Too bad you guys couldn't race in the daylight or at a track or something.

I know, but hey, it's better than nothing.
Slvr328IS 03-22-2003, 11:42 PM :handclap Good video. Congrats Sticky.
Sticky 03-22-2003, 11:45 PM I think this video was way better than the one I made with the 350z race. I am getting better at this. I am still searching for that compresison/quality balance.
I thought the nighshot worked out well too, it is not hard to see everything in the dark.
Leemos 03-23-2003, 12:08 AM Yeah these were pretty good races, although not a great place to race IMO. Fullerton road is just ahead and there could have very easily been a cop coming from there.
I think a more secluded place were you could set the camera up on a tripod about 1/8 mi. ahead and watch them come by would be ideal.
The c32 with pulleys seemed quite a bit faster than the stock one. All were nice rides.
Leemos,
"I always tell the truth, even when I lie."
darkesthours 03-23-2003, 12:58 AM I was actually the one filming this race. (1st 2 races were filmed from the c32 with a pulley upgrade).
Unfortunately I didn't really know how to work Sticky's camera so I messed up the taping on the races against the c32 with the pulley so those aren't on the video. However, Sticky did beat the modified c32 when they raced from a roll, but he lost when they raced from a stop.
FrankW 03-23-2003, 01:38 AM yeah, thanks for calling my (cough* pussy*cough)...;) Shows how mature you are. :mdrbig j/k
anywayz...i've decided to go, but fell asleep after watching that crappy wiz vs suns game on espn. Did av2 had the stock rims or bbs LM? that might have been the factor. Tomorrow i'm going to the Fountain Valley meet. If you guys are going i'll c ya there.
leemos, you got that right. I live around the area as well. There's tons of cops on fullerton all the time.
btw, one of my best friend has a 03 M3 SMGII...i've driven it. There is really nothing to prove about each car. Both are nice. If you put them both on the track, i'm sure the M3 will win handsdown.
FrankW 03-23-2003, 01:44 AM NICE VIDDDDD....
btw, is it me or that second run sticky was on the gas first before av2 step on it. :95
anyway, a kill is a kill...i don't think i can do any better than that...:)

I probably had a slight jump, but I did not cheat or anything like that, I went on the third honk. I did have less tire spin so I got off the line a bit quicker.
FrankW 03-23-2003, 01:53 AM I know, I can tell from the video...:)
whats the mileage on ur car? btw...
I guess from the video we can say that C32 is very much on par with M3 on acceleration. Remember the other video of c32vsM3 that was posted awhile ago? the c32 won by a car in that video.
it's all good....
we'll be meeting at Diamond Plaza at 10:30am tomorrow and roll to fountain valley around 11. see if you want to join...:)
yack447 03-23-2003, 02:04 AM nice work sticky

They are very close. I would say the m3 did have an edge accelerating in both instances with the stock c32. A pulley on the c32 and it really comes down to driver in that case. I will be racing a c32 with pulley + intercoler upgrade today, I will let you know how that goes.
Was the m3 in the video smg?
///Mwannabe 03-23-2003, 02:49 AM Hey if u tape that one let me know. I can host it for you.
Hey Sticky,
It was fun racing with you last night and having the opportunity of riding in your M3. The shift of that SMG transmission is unreal. Oh well...you win some, you lose some. It's all good. Enjoy your ride. :buttrock

yeah, i believe in the other video the M3 was a SMG as well. There's some voice talking about what car was running when they film the crap...
i got two vid for that...one is 371 kb and the other 500 kb

Hey, it was a lot of fun. The torque of the c32 is immense, that car is quite quick. If it makes you feel better I raced charles' c32 tonight with the pulley + intercooler upgrade and he beat me. We did not go from a stop but I would say he beat me decisively every time we raced. His car and peter's car are supposed to be similar, but charles car is just plain faster. He pulled 2-3 cars on me until 130 mph.
Indigo02Z24 03-23-2003, 01:24 PM Here's a question.. Why don't you just have someone ride along and tape from in car because you can't tell shit from the trailer? :)
Nice runs
My Z28 Your M3 03-23-2003, 01:49 PM :alright Check this out, sticky-fingers...
I want a bit of this action out on the same street.
Bring the M3 SMG AND the fastest C32 you can find...
I am in a very slightly modified 2002 Camaro Z28 and am very interested in pitting it against some of BMW and Mercedes big guns.
Send me a PM and let me know when. This weekend maybe?

I love when people say that... Oh, I have a slightly modded car... then they show up with a 900HP Lingenfelter Corvette or something...
My Z28 Your M3 03-23-2003, 02:07 PM
Point well taken...I should be more specific I guess. I work with one of the guys that raced sticky on Friday night. He can confirm my setup.
See my sig for actual mods...The NX 150-shot is being installed on Tuesday. I would like to race with AND without it (with just for kicks). I believe I can beat both the SMG Bimmer and the C32 to 120 naturally aspirated without much difficulty. :awink:

Indigo02Z24 03-23-2003, 02:28 PM The Z28 is going to walk the E46.. I've seen it time and time again. Those LS1's are great engine's but it's a pity the rest of the Car is a piece of sh*t.
Edited - I edited the Content. Forgot this forum has a PG-13 rating.

Did i ever say the Cavalier was of good quality? Nah.. It's a hunk of crap car. It serves it's purpose until i decide if i want an M Roadster or just a E36 M3.
If you wish we could compare my former car.... a 98 Supra to the F-Body if you wish. :)
I'm not here to rank on any car.. But you have to admit the F-Body wasn't of any quality. The drivetrain on the other hand is outstanding.
QuestMCoupe 03-23-2003, 02:55 PM I've got a friend with a 2001 Trans Am that has only Flowmaster exhaust and a K&N panel filter and has walked 2 e46 M3s. Not sure if they were SMGs but I dont think there would be much of a difference. I'm sure you can take the M3 especially with the mods you have. The LS1s are very strong cars...even more so when slightly modded.
My Z28 Your M3 03-23-2003, 02:59 PM This is my 3rd F-Body purchase. Quality-wise, it is the best I have owned. I really think that they finally did a good job 2000-02. They are a cut above the previous years.
Is the leather as nice as a BMW's, no it is not. Does it ride, feel, and look like a race car? I sure think so. Can it look fresh while chewing up and spitting out most any stock car on the road? Come find out... :az:
BTW...Why would you trade a 98 turbo Supra for a Cavalier...And are you feeling bad about it since you got out of rehab? :D

Couldn't afford the Insurance after i moved back to Pa so i Sold it and bought the cavalier in Cash. :)
The car isn't that bad.. Just something different i wanted to try.
slickav 03-23-2003, 04:37 PM Damn i swear thats a freaking chicken in the car. Nice run Sticky
ADAM///M 03-23-2003, 04:40 PM The LS1 should come out on top but I'm guessing it's going to be VERY close. Definitely vid this one guys. By the way, the link to the video is this post isn't working anymore.
///Mwannabe 03-23-2003, 04:55 PM are u sure? It works for me

Why is it that when i post a few threads (3 to be exact) showing that the E46 M3 is slightly better than the C32 no one believes me.
Whether coming from me or Sticky it doesnt matter. As long as everyone realizes that the M3 is about 1-2 tenths quicker than the MB im happy (stock to stock of course).

Always make sure you have everything on video, that way no one can raise a BS flag, and if they do, they look stupid. If I didn't have my 350z race on video some moron would have probably said the 350z was very comparable or something.

RWE TexM3 03-23-2003, 06:53 PM to be fair, it would have been much closer had the C32 had a better launch...that was a weak launch on his part
I blame the C32 driver for this...either way, nice kill

Antonio 03-24-2003, 04:38 AM "Pardon Moi"-French Accent. I think it's cute when a mullet boy comes onto a BMW site looking to compete in the 1 catagory it has a chance in, simply for bragging rights. Say your car beat Sticky's by 1200 car lengths on a 0-150 pull......who cares?
:dunno
Many of the people I am friends with, that own nice cars, refuse to race anything in a lesser catagory because tehy are usually doing it for pride and a chance to say "hey, my piece of crap beat a world class car*E46M3*"
A wise friend of mine once said,"I can make a toilette run 8s(in the 1/4 Mile), but at the end of the day it's used for taking my $h*ts." :)
Regardless, I think the E46 will win from a roll due to it's gearing. Although it may launch well, the Engineers in Germany weren't thinking of how to build a car that can do "killer hole shots."
Excellent races sticky:D It's awesome to see two badass German cars that are in the same class go at it!
Antonio 03-24-2003, 05:02 AM Edit: Just a bit of advice for "Mah Main Man"-Ali G:
You might want to try doing the vids from inside the car. I've always done them this way and it really adds to the effect. Make sure you toss another passenger in the other car as well so you can keep the weight even.
Here's an example;)http://www.supraforums.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=109181
SilverStreak 03-24-2003, 10:28 AM Nice runs, Sticky.
I have an idea, why don't a bunch of you head on down to a track where they have timing equipment, etc.
You can have a friend video tape the runs, no extra weight of having a camera man in the cars, you'd have timeslips to show for your effort, and it will be perfectly safe for all involved.
My Z28 Your M3 03-24-2003, 01:36 PM ***Many of the people I am friends with, that own nice cars, refuse to race anything in a lesser catagory because tehy are usually doing it for pride and a chance to say "hey, my piece of crap beat a world class car*E46M3*"***
Interesting perspective, but way off. I just like to show up folks who spent $60k+ for their rides so that they can brag about "German Engineering". Don't get me wrong, I think BMW's are cute. Chicks look great in them. :astromile
But when it comes down to real muscle, I look to American cars (Vipers, Corvettes, Camaros, Cobras, etc.) to produce real horsepower with an engine feeling/sound that you just dont get in a yuppie-mobile.
Listen to the hollow sound that you hear when you rev your motor up. Then listen to the deep gurgle of a well tuned LS1. There is something there that I like.
To each his own. Seriously though, I appreciate the power of an M5 or an SL55 as much as I do a Z06.
Truth is that I am just interested in gauging the strength of my vehicle against others that are touted as powerful. I work with one of the C32 owners that raced with Sticky already, and we talk alot about the strengths and weaknesses of all brands of cars.
I just like to race :) Can't we leave it at that?
P.S. Network Engineer-1/2 million $ home in R.S.M.-No mullet- Just like fast cars :emo
P.P.S. Speaking of rattles, problems and such...Aren't the World Class M3's (Or Bimmers in general) notorious for electrical problems and blown motors from over-revving? Maybe just a rumor... :awink:
My Z28 Your M3 03-24-2003, 02:12 PM ***Well if your competition is 3 liter 6 cylinders that says something about chevy's engineering***
No...It tells YOU that BMW is revving the HELL outa that motor of yours to keep up with one of the best V8's ever made :)
Don't mis-shift it though or BOOM!:boink
Casebrius 03-24-2003, 02:31 PM When it comes to car's, I'm ashamed to be an American engineer! Christ, there isn't one Motor City car that has even come out that has variable valve timing in it. Compare Power/liter ratio with just about any car in the world and we get smoked. If you compare a Z28 and an M3 that are 3 years old (or even a year old for that matter) with equal milage on each, I'd put money every time on the german engineering to have less squeeks and be much comparably tighter EVERY time. I guess American engineers aren't zealous enough in their engineering efforts! Don't get me wrong, I love America and everything we represent, well almost everything. We're just slackers sometimes. Who has the best manufacturing machinery in the world (arguably germany), best optics (Zeiss, Swarovsky), best weapons (prob H&K)....the list goes on. Anyway.....
Has anyone ever heard a decisive answer to the SMG launch and destroy your tranny warranty question? For those of you that have driven both, which do you prefer, the six speed or the SMG?

But, I agree on the level of this debate. I just want to race a couple of these fast cars. Why do we gotta trip :)

If that is your attitude I do not wish to race you. I have nothing to prove to you, I have a 60k automobile renowned the world over, you have an ls1, which was ended from production the world over.
How are you going to show me up? In a straight line? What happens when we enter a turn? What excuses then? You are saying BMW has to rev the shit out of an engine to get power? Well no shit, they could just stick a 6 liter v8 in the car, but they have class and engineering. They do not take the easy way out and you get a far more rewarding experience in the end.
I am getting another car soon, which will be all about straight line performance. We will race THAT car vs. your ls1.

See, this is exactly the Mullet way of thinking. If I were Sticky I would not give this guy the satisfaction of getting his ass handed to him.
People with much lesser cars want to come and try to prove how "cool" they are by issuing challenges.
Buddy, your problem is that you are ignorant when it comes to nice cars. You probably have never driven one before, so you think that just because your dumptruck accelerates fast in a straight line that it somehow puts you in the same catagory as a new M3. You Sir are Wrong :laugh
I speak from experience when I say that your car is a complete pile of crap. Everything about your car sucks.:( The public caught on and that is why no one bought them and they are no longer being produced. Instead of pissing your money away in modding that $hitbox I suggest you save it and put it towards a downpayment on a Vette. At least a Vette is built better.
This guy comes onto our board and starts crap you had better believe I am going to put him in his place. ;)
Just so you know I am speaking from experience, here is a piece of my old pile. Whenever I start to miss it*Yeah right* I simply shake a coffee can full of nuts and bolts violently next to my head. Think buddy, there must be a reason I got rid of it the first chance I got right?

My attitude is only...Got a fast car? Let's race...
I apologize if I didn't handle my frustration well after being flamed for having the audacity to ask a BMW owner if they would like to race a 'lesser car'.
Come on :) Please lose the highbrow caviar and wine crap. It perpetuates a comedic stereotype. Pops is driving an SL500, as a status symbol, and yes, I have driven it many times, and appreciate the appointments in a "fine" automobile such as that is. I like many cars for different reasons. I looked at M3's before I bought my car and dollar for dollar, the power potential from an M3 did not equate with the Camaro for me. I do think they look great and handle well. I DID read where they have a serious problem with blown engines not being handled by the factory, and numerous electrical problems that cost an arm to fix if they can even troubleshoot them appropriately the first time around. Thats just why my friend that raced Sticky bought his C32!
At the end of the day, I bought the car that I felt looked great, ran fast, and offered the best performance value for my money. So far, I have not had anyone walk me in it. No rattles yet ;) Been happy to date.
Why did I not get a Corvette? :( Simply because I was forced to look for a car with some form of back seat to accomodate my children. Otherwise I would rather have that body to go with my LS1.
Again, I apologize for letting the initial flamers engage me in defense of my purchase. That was foolish of me to fall into that trap. I really just wanted to see how fast those things really are.
Honestly ;)
SO anyway...You wanna race or not?
:dunno

I am not sure anymore, I mean, you said you enjoy showing up 60k cars so that they can't brag about german engineering. I am always up for a race, I am sure anyone on the boards will tell you that, but not when you say things like that.
Straight line is only one aspect of the car. The m3 was not even designed with this in mind and it still does well. Does it really make you happy to know your modified 5.7 liter v8 can bet an engine almost half the size with 2 less cylinders (IF it can win)?
I will decide if I will race based on your response, I hope you did not say everything you did in the previous post just to get me to race, and then start the same attitude when the race is finished.
My Z28 Your M3 03-24-2003, 05:05 PM Dude...I just heard that you raced a friend of mine. He said you raced in a straight line, from a stop, and from a roll. He said your car was fast. I said, I want in on that fun...
That's about the extent of it.
When I got flamed, I got a little hot ;) Trying to respond in the same way I was being talked to I guess.
I can appreciate the pros and cons of any car at the top of its class. And yes...I would be proud to do well even in a straight line race against a car such as yours. The same way you would be happy if you busted up a modded camaro with your vehicle. I am sure it would make the kill section on your boards. Lets be realistic :)
Please don't think that I would not like to take this to a windy road and see what I can do...I have trouble letting off the gas. Don't underestimate the importance of the addition of some Eibach (German) springs and Tokico (Japanese) shocks on a shitty American car :)
So, lets work it out. It would be fun, and that's what owning a fast car is really all about.....Right?

My Z28 Your M3 03-24-2003, 05:34 PM GREAT! I just gave my car to Bottle Fed Racing for the NX upgrade this morning. Supposed to be back Wednesday/Thursday with an extra 150HP on demand ;)
I will PM you when my car is returned and we'll figure out a "safe" location for a test drive :)
SilverStreak 03-24-2003, 06:19 PM It's a shame you're so far away, otherwise I have a little "cute" BMW that would give you a hell of a run, Nitrous or not... :evil2

What are the rest of your modifications? I hope you plan on running without the nitrous.
My Z28 Your M3 03-24-2003, 07:21 PM Yes, I will run it NA. Those are my mods, cept for little things (free mods/TBB/160 thermo, etc).
I am sure I am going to feel like trying out my new toy though :)
Any high 11 BMW's in South Orange County that want to come out and have some fun?

Ok so a lid, 3.42's, intake, and that is it pretty much right? This should be interesting seeing a modified z28 go at it with a stock m3. I want to go from a roll and from a stop.

I have an idea, why don't a bunch of you head on down to a track where they have timing equipment, etc.
You can have a friend video tape the runs, no extra weight of having a camera man in the cars, you'd have timeslips to show for your effort, and it will be perfectly safe for all involved.
I know what you are trying to say silver, but if you can figure out a way to run from a roll on a dragstrip, then we will all go... :stickoutt
My Z28 Your M3 03-24-2003, 07:29 PM You got my mods right. Just basic stuff to help it breathe better.
SO you are bone stock, Sticky? No computer tuning, intake, exhaust, etc?
I am down for running it from a stop and a from a roll...Be interesting to see how my new gears help or hinder me.
I think I may have a problem with traction...Only one way to find out :)

tiny 1.6 AXe 03-25-2003, 03:28 AM Hey,I just wanted to vouch for Sticky. His car is bone stock.
I rode in it,and raced against it myself. He won of course, every time (I have a modded Civic Si).

You little girls and your "running from a roll" crap...
For crying out loud, this is a drag race we're discussing! Nut up already, and learn how to launch! ;)
Running from a roll proves absolutely nothing (too many factors), and lessens the impact the driver will have on the outcome.

Well said SilverStreak!
These races should take place at the track next time.
Time Slips will prove all.
Sticky, how i lost 1/2 car to you from a roll still puzzles me when Charlie's C32 pulled you by 4-5 cars the next night.
We have the exact same setup. I'll have to question my own driving skills on that one. Who knows, Too many factors. Anyways, it was fun winning 1 and losing 1 to your M3/SMG.
Next time we'll line up at the track.
Sticky, can you post your time slip from Cali Speedway.
I would like to compare.
Here's mine. I'm on right lane.

SC5-Charles 03-25-2003, 03:38 PM Peter,
Maybe you should try some Track Bite lol :)
Or maybe you're just better at the track and Charlie's just better on the street ;)
Charles
PS. I broke my record of 14's and 15's on the track :)

Hey, charlie pulled me by 2-3 cars :) I talked to charlie about it, because it puzzled me as well and his car just seemed faster than yours for some reason. Either that or my car was slower, which really shouldn't be.
Here is the link to the thread I posted on cali speedway, I even have the one timeslip that I ran against charlie: http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76094

Charles,
I don't think track bite will help much. We know who tried it :astromile
What i really need is some drag radial or slicks to improve that horrible 60' time.
I think you are right. Charlie is mo better on the street. We'll leave all the street racing for him from now on haha.
Congrats on your new time

Weird, I don't get it. I guess we have no choice but to go to the track again, when is the next time we could all head out? I am pretty confident I can gain 2/10's on my previous best :)

Next event is May 10th. :(
(Summer Night Drag Racing at Cali Speedway).
I would really hate to go down to Carlsbad Raceway.
The dirt road into the track would really suck for my lowered car.

SilverStreak 04-01-2003, 09:32 AM Sticky, never feel embarassed to post your times from a day at the track here, no one is gonna pick on you cuz you didn't do as well this most recent time out vs a past time.
Feel free to post about it in the Track Forum, and maybe some of the folks there can offer suggestions and input to help you improve next time out, etc...

Silver, I only had 1 run in the 13's this time out. I even had a run with 2.4 60 foot. What I need to do is not rely on launch control and get myself some wider tires. Also, never, ever, go to carlsbad again.
SilverStreak 04-02-2003, 08:02 AM You could always get a separate set of wheels/tires just for the drag strip, get some 17x9's for the rear with 275/40-17 BFG DR's on them...
