Yes... I did (M2's, as available on the 330i sport package). They just clear.

so will any 17" rim fit on the m3.. also do they have to be staggered or same size all around ?

I think the catalog name is M68 - the "walking around" name is M2, like M Contour. They have 5 split spokes, and an ///M in the middle, just below the roundel. I prefer not to run staggered wheels on any of my cars, but these are 7.5 in the front and 8.5 in the back. I am running 20 MM spacers in the rear.

I don't believe that "any" 17 will fit (I'm almost sure that ACS 17" will not fit). It is all a function of the inside diameter of the wheel. That stat is not normally posted. You have to go with something others have tried and made work, or test and e prepared to send the wheels back. I know the M Contour and SSR Comps fit in 17" fitment.
