I drained the fluid underneath, kinda dark green color and why in the engine
compartment, the cannister that says ATF only is still full and in dark red color?

That cannister on top is for the power steering

ya. thats ur power steering. if u need detailed info on your tranny and what fluid you should do, PM me and i'll send you two PDFs that I have containing info. In my expericence from reading on these boards, changing auto tranny fluid on an e46 is risky if you don't do it with the right fluid...however once its done and workin well, its well worth it.

Gumbee. Transmission fluid is not green. If it's a GM tranny,
then it's red. It may be clear if it's the ZF unit but I'm not 100%
sure. You have to know what transmission you have so that you
can use the proper fluid. There is a strick procedure to follow the
fill which is done with the engine running and the temp of the tranny
between 30 to 50 deg. celsius! Somethings are best left to the
dealer to do. A few hundred dollars saved now may turn into a
$5000 - $6000 new transmission.
