My '87 M6 just started revving up to 2,000 RPM from idle all on its own. This happens when the engine is warm. It will suddenly rev from 850 to 2,000, and I can only bring it back down by:

1. Stabbing the accelerator to 3,000 and letting it back down, or
2. Engaging the clutch in gear

ECM? Mass Air Sensor? Chip?

Reminds me of my friends old Audi 5000!

could be idle control valve related, sounds like what mine did when the connector was loose...
