It's time for me to part with my beloved 540i and move on. This car has been nothing but a pleasure to own and drive. I am the third owner and I have every single maintenance record since new. I also have the original brochures with the first owner's options circled, window sticker, magazine articles, both keyless entry keys and valet key, even the Montana leather samples from the dealer. I scoured the US and flew down to San Francisco to purchase this because it was the cleanest of the clean. This car is equipped with the Sport, Premium, and Comfort packages, which include almost every option available:
- 4.4 liter DOHC, 32 valve (4-cam) V-8 engine
- 6-speed manual transmission
- All Season Traction (AST) with cornering stability
- Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
- Four wheel ventilated disc brakes
- Automatic seatbelt tensioner, front seats
- Cruise control
- Driver and passenger side airbags
- Front door-mounted side impact airbag system
- Vehicle-speed-sensitive variable assist power steering
- Sports suspension calibration
- Halogen Free Form low beam headlights & foglights
- Aluminum double pivot strut-type front suspension
- Full size spare wheel
- Electronically adjustable steering column
- Memory system for driver's seat, seatbelt height, steering wheel, and outside mirrors (3 settings)
- 3-point seatbelts and head rests at all seating positions
- Leather interior trim
- Automatic climate control w/separate left & right temperature control, automatic recirculating function, anti-dust/bacteria/pollen microfilter
- Activated-charcoal microfilter ventilation
- Multi-function steering wheel
- Anti-theft electronic AM/FM stereo cassette radio BMW audio system with 10-channel high performance amplifier with 6-disc trunk mounted CD changer
- Power 2-way moonroof with 1-touch operation & sliding interior sunshade
- Remote keyless-entry security system with keyhead remote, 2-step unlocking, remote trunk opening
- Power windows with 1-touch lowering & raising
- Automatic dimming inside mirror
- Dual cupholders front & rear, coinholder
- Premium Onboard computer with Multi-Function Information Display
- 16-way comfort seats
- Heated seats
- Premium Hi-Fi (DSP)
This car has been babied all its life. Always garaged and it shows. I'm only selling this because I need a 4x4, so I'm getting a 4runner. Unfortunately, I can't afford to have both.
When I purchased this car I had a pre-purchase inspection done by a shop in California held in high esteem by the California BMW community. The only thing they found it needed was new rear tires and was in excellent mechanical condition. I've replaced the tires and the mechanics are still in perfect working order.
This car has a few tasteful upgrades, listed below:
- Bilstein Sport Suspension ($1650 installed @ 90k)
- Dinan Stage 2 Software ($800 installed @ 113k)
- Benfer Intake ($250 installed @ 113k)
- M5 Kidney Grills ($85)
- M3 Short Shift Kit ($150)
In addition to the above upgrades I have a huge stack of receipts for preventive maintenance procedures that were performed. This car was maintained by Dinan for a good portion of it's life. If you've done your research you know the Achilles Heel of BMW's are their cooling systems. You'll be happy to hear the radiator, expansion tank, and hoses were all replaced within the last 30k miles. The car has 119,xxx total miles at this time and needs absolutely nothing. I hate to sound so cliché but this really isn't many for a well-maintained BMW, especially considering there are E39 540i's out there with twice the mileage still running like a top. This car gets around 17mpg in the city and 27 on the highway. I'm not sure, but according to many sources the 1997 and 1998 540i's dyno higher than the 1999+ 540i's.
These pictures were taken a week ago, after I spent seven hours detailing the exterior, which I do every six months. Wash, clay, wash, buff, polish, seal; yeah, it's a lot of work, but well worth it. Paint in the dealership doesn't feel this soft and smooth! In the pictures you can see the car has OEM European Xenon headlights. These will not be included with the car; it comes with the stock headlights installed. If you would like, I will include the Xenon headlights for an additional $950 (I paid $1465 and they go for $1100 used). You can also see it's missing the roundel (BMW emblem) on the hood. It was getting a bit faded so I figured I'd pull it off for the detailing then just replace it. I bought a brand new one from Rasmussen and put it on the next day. This car has never been in an accident and has both a clean title and a clean Carfax history. I also have a set of 18" AC Schnitzer Type II wheels with tires that we may be able to work out a deal on with the purchase of the car.
Not to be rude, but please don't come to me with a blue book quote in hand asking if I'll drop my price by several thousand dollars. While I know you may be able to find an E39 540i 6-speed for a lower price, I assure you you're not going to find one around the Northwest with better documentation and maintenance. I spent seven months looking for the perfect E39 with an excellent history. After driving thousands of miles and test driving over 20 cars this is the one I brought home. If you'd like to see a spreadsheet of the maintenance and upgrade records I can email it to you in Excel format. Please don't hesitate to contact me with any questions. I also have higher resolution pictures available.
Thanks!
