View Full Version : 88 M6 has a hesitation!
When I Press on the gas in just about every position has anyone had this problem with their 6series any idea wear I can start looking to diag this problem I bought the PEAKE scan tool it doesn't read Mseries cars so if your looking to buy a scan tool and you own an Mseries don't waste you time or money!!!!!!!
m6affliction 10-12-2007, 01:35 AM What do you mean "in just about every position?" It might help if you clarify the situations when the hesitation occurs. What gear? From a standing start? At what speed? You get the idea. Also, a little punctuation makes it a lot easier to read.
e24mpwr 10-12-2007, 10:09 AM How many miles on the car? When was the last time the car had a valve adjustment ? Does it idle smoothly?
alpinacsi 10-12-2007, 10:21 AM I think the M series requires a different tool. You might want to check Peake's website. Or did you get the tool specifically for the M series?
Mine hesitates if I dont let the rpm's come down after starting it before I drive her.

Not to Hijack, but, you mention valve adjustment. Mines is starting to idle a little on the rough side, not too, too bad though, just a little. Have you had a valve adjustment done? How much cost? You know, all the painful questions.
m6affliction 10-12-2007, 01:05 PM I had a valve adjustment done just recently. Not 100% sure how much it cost, because I had some other work done at the same time. But I think it was around $150 or $200. The car drives much better now. I would do it if you haven't had an adjustment in a while.
sixseries 10-12-2007, 03:00 PM try doing it by yourself. its not that bad
jbd5015 10-12-2007, 09:11 PM hahahaha, wow dave, that took me about 3 mins to read!
lets give the guy some time to post back before going any further.
afranzen,
i know youve stated before that you arent to adept to working on the cars, but from what ive heard, as long as you have the right stuff, a valve job on the M30 isnt too bad.

A valve job on an M6 S38 engine is VERY different than one on an M30.
If the way I write bothers you so much just don't answer next!!!!!!!!! As for the guys that aren't out here to grade my writing skills------ The car has 65k on it it idles fine
and it does it in all gears and in different accelerator pedal positions as for the scan tool it's not M specific!!!!!!
dm635 10-13-2007, 05:55 AM Sorry about that. I didn't think before I wrote a response. It was un-necessary. Should have left it alone. But you get my drift, I had to read a few times to figure what you were asking. I'm not the grammer police nor do I care to be.
If I were to troubleshoot a 635 (the M should be similar), I would rule out the AFM operation and fuel pressure 1st.

Sorry, but you obviously never did it on the M motor with DOHC because it is not simple unless you have the proper tool and the shims. It's not like on the M30 with SOHC :)

You should check your AFM. Sounds like a sticky flap to me.
amthatiam 10-13-2007, 09:35 AM The most common things that I'm aware of that cause hesitation are first, the in tank fuel pump, you will notice the hesitation more as the fuel gets lower in the tank, especially 1/4 tank and below, check the pump connections at the tank, easy to accsess from the trunk. Next, check the throttle position switch for function and adjustment, if this is bad or out of adjustment it will hesitate. The AFM can cause some pretty serious hesitation when it goes bad, I replaced mine with the Miller MAF, WOW , its a different car. Next check the intake bellows, the acordian looking rubber hose between the air filter housing and the intake plenum, they get cracked and allow unmetered air into the engine causing two things, higher idle and hesitation, you said that your idle is fine so I would doubt that is the problem but check it anyway. The other things would be cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. My money is on the in tank pump.

jeffcfp1 10-15-2007, 08:23 AM Hey, just curious, you like your maf. Did you go from stock chipless to it or did you have a chip already. Just curious. I had a JC chip, now sold and waiting on the maf to come in. Very boring drive w/o the chip.
amthatiam 10-15-2007, 11:47 PM Hey Jeffcfp1,
My car had a Dinan chip in it, you will love the MAF, made a big difference in the way my car runs. Throttle response is instant, and low end mid range is much improved. There is a bit more intake roar, sounds really good when I take it up through the gears.
Top end feels the same to me, the only difference, is the miller chip puts the rev limit back to stock@6800 RPM, the dinan was over 7000 RPM Due to the different technology you have to run the miller chip, if you want the RPM limit raised miller will do it for you.
