I'm confused (and ignorant). Would projectors out of a 2004 M3 take d2S bulbs or H7 bulbs? Or are these the same thing? On the Namotorworks website it says H7, but they're called D2S projectors right? And the stuff I've read says D2S bulbs are OEM equipment. I have a buddy who's giving me some projectors out from an e46 M3, and I'm just wondering which bulbs I would want if i get an HID kit.

if they are projectors, then they will be D2s.....and D2S is NOT the same as H7

you will need some D2S bulbs, and an oem ballast setup, along with the D2S projectors

Thanks! So the NA motorworks website is kinda misleading then. They have a chart for bulb types and it says H7 for 2001-2004 M3 lowbeams. But can't I just buy an HID kit with D2S bulbs? Why does it have to be an "OEM Ballast setup"?

it said H7 for low beams cause they did offer halogen - non-projector low beams in the M3 for a bit......but if you are getting M3 projectors, then they are OEM D2S hid projectors......

that also means that you can also only put in D2S bulbs, and those are only compatible w/ oem ballasts....though you can buy adapters, but that complicates things
you could buy an HID kit from hidplanet.com which uses philips/hella ballasts and bulbs, all for D2S

most aftermarket HID kits have ballasts that connect to H7 or H1 "hid" bulbs, to fit into the standard halogen projectors.....

correct me if I am wrong guys

As far as I know we sell D2S/D2C only as a replacement bulb for people that have OEM factory installed hid kits.

There are few other cars that use a D1S/D1C bulb as a Oem Hid bulb. I know E90's and chrysler 300's use D1's.

So basically if you car came from the factory with a hid and you need replacement bulbs or want to change the color of your bulbs you will be ordering a D2 or a D1.

If you are replacing a halogen bulb with a HID kit then you need to order H7, H1, 9006 etc....etc...

both headlights had projector headlights, so if you had the factory xenon option then d2s if not then h7.

But if these are factory D2S projectors, then why would it matter that they didn't come from my car? (I did confirm these are D2S btw). From what I understand so far, these projectors will take D2s bulbs (I don't see why that would change by taking them out of the M3 and putting them in another head light), but I also still don't understand why it takes an OEM ballast. Couldn't they take any ballast as long as it works with D2S bulbs? Or is that what was meant by an OEM style ballast, i.e. one that worked with D2S bulbs?

thats exactly right, dont be confused, you got it.
they are d2s in any car you put them into.
you can get any ballast, with some you'll just need an adapter.
try the new 50w digital kit i have, they work killer in oe set ups, i have a few d2s kits that would plug right in for the price of one OE ballast from your local stealer, as a plus you'll also get a warranty.

The H7 is just a normal bulb and thats what is in my 04 330coupe for the daytime running lights.

na, you dont need an adapter, but you will need a full kit, to work properly you would need the 50w bulbs, my guess is the ballast will zap your 35w bulbs rather quickly.
