if i wanna do the Euro H1/H4 headlight on my E28-based 6er, do they have to come off of another E28-based car, or can they come off an E12-based car?
*yes, typo, supposed to be E28-based not E24...it was way too late when i made this thread, haha.

they are not interchangeable because of a different way of fixing them in the black base plate (don't know the correct term). E12 based are held in place via the chrome rings which are screwed while E28 (not E24 based - typo I guess) based ones mount differently and the chrome rings clip on.
If requested I can post pics of E12 based lights.
BTW, I often read H1/H4 when you talk about Euro headlights. They are actually H1/H1 because the bulbs are identical. H4 bulbs are combined low/high beams like on the E23 and E28 /the outer bigger ones).

The H1/H4 Hellas are aftermarket items and will fit the US headlight buckets. The e12/e24 Euros are H1/H1 and will fit any of the US e24 except the last ones that used the elipsoid lights. But the early Euro ones will not interchange with the later Euro one because of what wokke has mentioned. Now with that said, you will occasionally find a later Euro model here in the states with the early Euro or the aftermarket Hellas because the headlight buckets were changed when the vehicle was federalized. During the process the buckets were changed to the US buckets that retained the US spec sealed beam lens with the chrome retaining ring.
Have you found lights that you plan to use? The aftermarket Hella should work without changing how the lights are wired in the US models.

yeah, looking at a set on eBay that still has a relatively low price...dude said they're hella's that he took out of a '79 633, hence my question on the move from E12 to E28.

Used ones may be fogged, have rusty reflectors or have a lot of stone pitting. They will also require rewiring to make them work correctly with the US wiring. You might want to consider a set of new ones from Hella or Cibie eventhough they may cost a little more atleast they will be clear and new.

I do have a complete set of Euro headlights in mint condition I would consider selling for US$300,-. All metal parts I had sand blasted and powder coated. My plan was to use them for my M635 but then I found a perfect set incl. washer system.
Pictures upon request.

the supporting frame of my set won't fit an E28. Are you looking for the complete assembly or just the headlights? Those seem to be identical unless you have a Euro version in which the outer driving lights are larger in diameter than the inner high beams.
Here are some pictures. The price in those pics isn't valid anymore because it dates from "ancient" times when the US$ was still much stronger against the Euro than today.

Way back in the day, (early 80s) it was a popular conversion in Germany to change over the low beam H1 bulbs to H4 bulbs. My 80 Euro's original German owner did the conversion on my 80 635 CSi. He also ordered it with out a rear spoiler, badges or pin stripes. Everything he did to his car was understated. Except for the Alpina air dam. He did add a complete Alpina wheel & suspension package on the car. He told me he liked driving the autobahn without markings on his car. (Stealth mode) in my words.

on my M635 I have the M-emblem only on the trunk. This allows the PORSCHE drivers to see what kind of car just passed them at 150MPH on the Autobahn :stickoutt
