So I have the motorsport flag vinyl on the front and rear of my E36 M3 and was wondering if clay baring over it will hurt the vinyl. Will it leave a residue on it, or will it shine? Just curious, thinking of doing a full detail this weekend, and I don't want to mess up my vinyl by claying. Thanks!

If you use a clar bar on the vinyl, just be careful aroun the edges as so that it doesn't catch the edge of the decal and leave some clay residue behind. If you are going to try to use a Clay Bar than I would try the PINNACLE Ultra Poly Clay (http://www.autogeek.net/ultra-fine-poly-clay.html). This is the finest clay composition available today.

I don't see the upside of it, so I wouldn't try it.

Thanks Rob! I should've clarified that I'm going to detail the whole car, not just the flag area, hahaha.

So this might not be the right place for it, and also forgive my horrible question, but what is clay and what are the benefits?

Claybar can get off some paint imperfections such as bits of tar, bugs, goo...other paint, overspray...etc.

Its basically a chunk of "clay" that you clean the paint with. Typically you should use some sort of spray with it...I use the meguires final touch. Get the stuff worked around in your hand so its moldable, then spray the paint surface and rub the claybar onto it.

Its kinda like waxing, but without the wax, and with a bar of clay :D
