View Full Version : I'm scared...
skylinergtr 10-09-2007, 08:28 PM i just came back home, with my friend, and i just got a new exhaust system in the car. the exhaust is supposeably pretty loud, but i wanted to see if it was loud being outside of the car. so i left my friend just revv it on idle. i did not know that he knows nothing of cars. so he was just flooring it on idle, and i looked through the window and i saw it the revvs go like past 7000rpm, way in the redline. i was so scared i shut off the car. opened the hood. it wasn't very HOT. then i turned it on again, and it seemed all right. i was later on so worried that i had time alone with my car, and i guess everything seemed to be the same. could anything go wrong with my car? i was so scared, but i think i'm lucky nothing happened. i cant afford to fix anything drastic in my car. could it have been worst? other than a blown engine, can something later on be damaged because of this....
thanks
Rod

Don't worry about it ... my m20 525 once decided to downshift into 3rd when I was well into the triple digits and send the tach way past 7000rpm ... the car actually drove better after that.
Analog 10-09-2007, 08:36 PM You should be good. You would absolutely have to hold it on the rev limiter for awhile to hurt the motor. What is the limiter set on your chipped car?

If that happens again, let the car sit and idle to let the motor cool down. As the engine's internals heat up as RPM's go up, then you shut off the motor, the internals quickly shrink. You can sometimes hear it when you shut off the car. Like a
"ticking" noise.
Which just isn't good for the motor.

thanks, i felt the same way kinda, i went around the neighbourhood, and i hit 60mph pretty quickly on a residential street. lol
lotucris 10-09-2007, 08:38 PM dont worry about it, bouncing off the rev limiter isn't something you should worry about unless you do it for like 5 minutes straight.

well yeah my car is chipped, and i was told that the rev limited is to 7000 with the new chip, but while driving i only got it to 6500rpm but thats not bad, its just a touch onto the redline, but my friend was just gunning it on idle it was was way deep in the red. he probably went further than 7000 but w.e. i should have left it to idle, but i just shut it off in a hurry.

thanks, yeah i'm clamed down now seeing as my care seems to be the same now:D
TC535i 10-09-2007, 08:49 PM Your car will not overrev from revving it in idle. If the engine isn't properly warmed up, it's not great for your head gasket, but it won't kill it instantly either.
