I went to the stealership to get the right oil for my LSD and they told me they only sell it in 55 gallon drums and also couldnt tell me what grade I need. This is for my 87 L6. Any sugestions would be greatly appreciated.
thanks. PS I pick it up wednesday the body shop has had it since 9/21/07:redspot

I don't know if the LSD's in the E24's are different than the one in my E30 but I bought a tube of LSD additive and then put in regular diff oil found at Auto Zone. I believe the biggest thing is the LSD additive that allows the clutches to work properly, if you use just regular diff oil they will bind around turns and wear out.

Seems to be working fine so far. Hopefully someone will chime in so I know whether mine needs to redone as well!

I had the same problem a while ago. After a lot of searching around i found a company who would supply the correct grade oil by the litre. The company is in the uk but maybe they can send it to you in the states. The company is called sussex engine supplies ltd. it cost me £20.00 ($40 approx) for two litres. the correct grade is xfs80w/140. Hope this is of help.

the Bently manual says you should use Hypoid gear oil SAE 90, GL-5. the book doesn't say anyhting about LSD additives.
bavauto.com has a Red Line synthetic 75W90 for $9/qt.
i recently put Red Line synthetic in my tranny (70W80), and it feels pretty good.

Im rebuilding an LSD unit to put into wolfie. I plan on using redline synthetic and the tube of lsd fluid. That was recommended to me by a guy putting that stuff into the diff of his hartge h7s, so ill take his word for it haha.

I think it may depend on which fluid you get. I know there is a normal diff fluid that redline makes, and then you go to a GM dealer and get a tube of LSD fluid. You add that to the redline and your good to go.

You know, if you had no idea what the abbreviation of lsd meant to a car guy, this would be a very strange thread. someone would read it and go, "wait, you can get lsd in a tube from auto parts companys? Trippy dude."

Did you drain your old fluid first? I know it sounds like a no-brainer, but, I would like to get an idea of how much you used to fill it up following a drain. I dont have a bentley otherwise I would not be forced to ask these stupid questions. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/lsixer/shakehead-1.gif

Here is a repost of an earlier one I made, check out the Redline Whitepapers:

"Here I am in the middle of an Inspection II on my '87 635 and I popped down to the local auto store to pick up some good old fashioned straight SAE 80 non hypiod GL-4 gear lube for the tranny and some SAE 90 hypoid GL-5 for the differential just like the book calls for. I wasn't concerned about finding it because I've been dumping this stuff in my cars from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Well the kid behind the counter looked at me like I had two heads. When I asked what they were selling to put in manual transmissions, he gave me a bottle of 80w90 GL-5 and pointed to the lable where it said "suitable for transmissions" at which I had to point out the rest of the statment said " calling for MT-1" and then handed him another brand that explained that MT-1 was for NON synchro trucks and busses!
So I called a Stealer....oops I mean Dealer and asked what they were using. After a lot of hemming an hawing he finialy said they had barrels of synthetic Castrol SAF XO and XJ imported from the UK and wasn't available in the US! I did finally find two GL-4 oils at NAPA; their store brand and one made by CRC. But I decided to wait and checkout Redline and found an informative white paper on why tranny oil is different from rear axle oil :

Transmission oil ------> http://www.redlineoil.com/whitePaper/13.pdf
All of the white Papers --> http://www.redlineoil.com/tech.asp

It seems that the friction level and corrosion protection for the synchro's are the factors."

Do you need the LSD (heh) additive if you have an open diff?

no additive needed for an open diff.

your info says you have an L6, isn't that an automatic? this is a manual tranny discussion...you'd put 3 l (3.2 qt.) of dexron or dexron II ATF in yours.
