View Full Version : How to Remove Decals From Visor? Incompatible 10-08-2007, 10:03 PM My 2007 Z4 Coupe has a BIG YELLOW WARNING decal on each visor. OK I'm warned. What is the recommended way to remove these without damaging the visor material? Thanks in advance. nickdeck 10-09-2007, 06:42 AM I know I've seen other threads about this, but you'd need to do a search to find them. If not here, try E46fanatics. I'd like to get rid of mine, too, but as I recall, the procedure to get rid of them is pretty harsh and may leave your visor wrinkled and ugly. I also recall that someone posted that if you buy a replacement visor from BMW, it doesn't have the warning label on it. Go figger. simracer 10-09-2007, 10:05 AM IIRC, you used something like Goo Gone or D-Solv-It, but do a search because it's been a while since I've seen it. Yes, it does wrinkle the vinyl, but according to the author, it would restretch itself out over the next few hours. E92!Dreier 10-09-2007, 10:40 AM denatured alcohol...soak a rag in a good amount of the smelly stuff (soaked but not dripping). Then use a rubber band or your hand (if you or patient) to hold the rag against the visor where the sticker is (I used an extra rag on the back of the first one to make sure it didn't drip and held it with my hands). After about two minutes (or less), peel the shriveled sticker off. Incompatible 10-09-2007, 11:02 AM nickdeck: I have done searches on this and several other forums before posting and had limited luck. With what I did find, the results were less then ideal. I have not tried the E46fanatics forum. Many of the posts dealt with covering up the existing decal with one custom made for that purpose - big thing on the corvette forum. I thought it best to ask again since a lot of the posts were older ones. E92!Dreier: Sounds like this might be a good way to go, it would eliminate some of the residue problems that seem to be associated with the Goo Gone process. Let's see what other suggestions are posted. Thanks for the help! nickdeck 10-09-2007, 01:47 PM I'll mark this one "subscribed." I'd love to get rid of that hideous thing. ryanlong01 10-09-2007, 03:28 PM I've never removed this exact sticker, but in general a little heat to soften the adhesive helps stickers/vinyl/etc to come off. I'd try a hair dryer or (carefully!) a heat gun to help coax it off. I'd try a hair dryer or (carefully!) a heat gun to help coax it off. I could be wrong, but heat doesn't look like the solution for these decals, or at least heat alone. The visor/decal texture almost appears to be a silkscreen or spray on process. No real visible edges or thickness to work with. I'll wait a day or two for additional input before I do the deed. Thanks for the info. Mad Dog 20/20 10-10-2007, 02:44 PM After allowing the car to sit in the hot sun for a few hours w/ the visors turned down, I was able to peel the driver's side off with my finger nail. This was in an e39 w/ cloth-covered visors. By the time I attempted the passeneger side, however, it had apparently cooled too much and I could not get the peel process started. Mild heat. nickdeck 10-10-2007, 03:39 PM This was in an e39 w/ cloth-covered visors. I could see how cloth-covered might make it easier to remove, as opposed to the leatherette visors I have. Incompatible 10-10-2007, 10:13 PM To all who are interested. I'm going to continue to search and collect information until Saturday when I'll start and hopefully finish this project. Although I have my doubts about heat, it seems the least destructive so I'll try that first, then move on to others if necessary. Stay tuned, I'll post my results as they happen. Thanks again to all who have offered advice/comments. nickdeck 10-10-2007, 10:14 PM Thanks, and keep us posted. Also, if you can, take before and after pics... Bimmerguy5 10-11-2007, 02:29 PM I've used the heat method on past cars with little to no problem. It might be even better with your leatherette visors. Incompatible 10-11-2007, 07:16 PM :redspotFirst some observations: There appears to be a difference between the older/newer application methods for the visor decals. The older method uses a label (you can feel the thickness with a fingernail) applied by adhesive to the surface. Heat is the technique which works well for removal of these decals. The newer method is an ultra thin appliqué which fits into the surface texture of the underlying vinyl and does not cover it up. Heat has no effect on this type of decal. I started by removing the visors and laying flat on my workbench. On the recommendation of E92!Dreier I tried some alcohol. Using wood shaft cotton applicators (lab style Q-tips) I saturated the decal surface with alcohol for about 60 seconds and did some light rubbing on a corner using the cotton tip. The decal started to stretch and pull up where I was rubbing it. If you’re careful you can rotate the cotton tip and pull up a section of decal like wrapping cotton candy on a cone. The process went quickly and I did both visors in about 10 minutes. I did a cleanup rubdown with a towel soaked in alcohol and allowed the visors to air dry for an hour. I then put on some protectant and reinstalled the visors. If you move the visors around (before reinstalling) and catch the light in just the right way, a very light ghost outline is visible of the decal edges. Installed in the car nothing is visible. The vinyl looks the same as the original, there is no change in the color or the texture and there are no wrinkles. Sorry about no “before” shots. |
