View Full Version : Owners: E63 v E24
jbd5015 10-08-2007, 05:36 PM I know that this doesnt apply to all E63 owners, but to those who ive passed on the road it does. I have either passed on other side of the road, been next to in same lane, or passed at intersections about 8 E63s while in wolfie.
I know that i usually dont miss the new 6 when im out driving, kind of hard to really. Its a great looking car, and it turns a lot of heads. I can say that about the E24 as well. Ive seen 4 E24s on the road, maybe 5. But ive never been in wolfie when i saw them.
The point: Out of the 8 or so E63's ive seen, 4 of them ive made eye contact with the drivers while im in wolfie. I give them the thumbs up, they just kinda stare, go back to talking to nothing (Bluetooth?), and one laughed at me i think. Never, not once, did i get a thumbs up or anything back.
I find that strange as their car wouldnt have a 6 on the ass of it if it wasnt for the E24. It would be an 8 or something. I know that gbelton loves the E24, and wouldnt do this, but has anybody else have this happen to them? It makes it seem as though they dont appreciate the E24.

alpinacsi 10-08-2007, 06:29 PM To them: its a car. To others; its a passion.
rugbywinger13 10-08-2007, 06:37 PM Happens to me all the time...I flashed two new 6's while in Vermont this weekend while driving in Traudl...I got nothing.

Very good point, i would just hope to think that more people bought the new 6 as a passion. I dont think the new 6 is just a car, as i definitely dont think the E24 is just a car. To each his own.

Im positive its not every driver, i would hope for every 1 i didnt get a response from, i would get a response from another at some point.

Acorn 10-08-2007, 08:33 PM Warning: Potential Threadjack!
Jeff, I seem to recall seeing that E24 Roundel and Shark combination that's in your sig before, a few boardmembers were attempting to make a shirt. Do you remember this? Has anything come of it? I'm not exactly sure who all was involved.
And to comment on the new 6ers, I've not been able to drive my e24 and get a response, but from what I've seen, at least around RDU, is that they have been largely purchased as company cars, which may lead to people not exactly taking time to know about their car and it's heritage.

Yea, i made the design last semester, and then it kinda fell through. I just found it again on my online files, and decided to use it again! Ill see about making shirts. Maybe ill make a few for SESF. Send a couple around to some people that def want them, see if people at SESF like them, and make more.
As for the original posting comments haha:
Ive never heard of a big luxury coupe being a company car. Thats one hell of a car to be given from your company. Id like to work for them!! I could see though, that if the car was given to you, you probably wouldnt go through the trouble of researching it.

gbelton 10-08-2007, 11:18 PM Just buy the new 6 series because they can and like others have stated, "These people types have no passion for automotive history and present!"
It is a shame but whatever floats their boat because those owners/leasers will never join events like we enjoy... They will never run an auto x, and they scour on a back road twisty.
It's interesting the scenario you guys experienced. I have experienced the same treatment with other new 6 series owners. I look, I wave, I thumbs up, I nod the head and most of them just ignore me or look at me like I'm an alien. :help
I guess we notice it more since we care a little more...
PRJKTGRMN 10-09-2007, 01:44 AM yeah i agree with whats already been said - i cruised next to a new six and the guy barely even cared to look over. honestly i doubt he even knew what my car was or the history of his own.
but w/e, i've driven quite a few of the new E63s and as much as i love them, i'll stick with my E24.
bumbavfan 10-09-2007, 02:20 AM I think that people that bought BMW's back in the 80's, were more likely to be car enthusiast than the typical BMW buyer of today. Today, BMW is trying cater to a wider spectrum, including the luxo customers that would otherwise go to lexus and MB. So to me, it only make sense that you are not going to the return thumbs up. The luxo car buyer of course has no real appreciation for origin of the DNA that makes their cars sporty. They couldn't care less. And i don't know if BMW is aware of this or if they are, do they even care?
In the "good old" days, when someone bought a BMW, the car had a special feel. The car had a responsive suspension, a great engine, and simple controls. All this in a sum of parts that was greater and that told the owner of the new BMW that he/she was driving something with a lot of racing heritage...you could feel it when you drove the car.
But compare that to today where you have i-drive and variable ratio steering, and all those gadgets. I think this only waters down the experience of what BMW made its reputation on. And so how can you expect to attract true enthusiasts like you use to? i don't think you can.
sixseries 10-09-2007, 02:25 AM i like that analysis a lot bumbavfan.
jeepman2 10-09-2007, 03:20 AM i have spoken with a few new 6 guys in my 85, but i get many compliments from the old school audi crowd and also lots of love from the e30 crowd.

Do you think the 1 Series will bring back the goos old days?

Funny you should mention that...On my way back from VT, I got the thumbs up from a guy in in old Audi coupe.
Jeff, your design would make a great HAT!
Lsixer 10-10-2007, 12:02 PM I dont think the newer owners are necessarily de-void of the cars history, what you may be running into my friends is plain old rudeness, or just plain indifference. :dunno
I often see new sixers, unfortunately I am usually in my seven so there is no use for a visual bonding gesture. I guess I should take out the six more often.
We really have to stop with these comparissons, we are giving Greg a complex man! Hes gonna stop talking with us and ignore us. :)

Who is Greg? Does he own a E24 or E63?

Ya, I was referring to you, sorry, the senior moments are more and more frequent these days.
jeffcfp1 10-11-2007, 06:20 PM Bumbavfan's got it right on. In fact, at the Bavauto show Sunday (my first), I was amazed at the crowd, don't think there wasn't an enthusiest there with the 350 cars that got in. ON way up, cautioned my wife that we might see a new 6 or two and that the new 6 group was a different "crowd". I see the new 6 as a yuppie type status vehicle like its competitor cars. At 43, with my own investment management firm, I could "afford" to go that route, and fit the profile I just described, but you won't see me in a bimmer newer than my new to me 88's. I'd be selling my sole if I drove around in a car like that (plus they look like pontiac sunbirds IMO). Nothing, that is NOTHING looks like an E24. Let's not forget, for what its worth, supposedly Sean Connery owned one, now thats good company. Next time, instead of the thumb...w/ no reply, try the finger.

Seeker 10-12-2007, 12:47 AM I've got little old ladies driving new 6ers over here.
ANymore the new BMW's are a status symbol and not an enthusiasts car.
I'd say over here there is a 3% chance I'd run into someone who drives a new 6 that knew that a e24 was a BMW.. even with the roundels blaring at them.
I usually only get a thumbsup when I'm in my E36 and a little "spirited" driving on the highway from domestics/jap cars.

WOW! They actually give out speeding tickets in the motor city metro area? When I was there, driving on 696, I felt lucky to get out alive.
That was the first time I saw someone cross 5 lanes of traffic to grab an exit while cutting off 5 other drivers. http://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w245/lsixer/shakehead.gif
