In the bottom right corner there is a tiny recessed button so small that you must use a straightened paper clip or fine tip ball point pen to push it. It is called the changeover contact.
The display should be reading "- - - - UHR". The UHR means metric units, so first change the units:
1) Press the "AVG MPG" button.
2) Press the changeover contact once for U.S. (MPG), twice will give you Imp. (M/P), and three metric (L/100)
Next use the four buttons across the bottom to input the time, the "1000" will set the first digit, the "100" the next and so on. Press the changeover contact to finish. If the AM/PM is wrong, press the "1000" button twice.
To set the date, Press the "HR-DATE" button and then the changeover contact. Input the date using the four buttons across the bottom as with the time and then press the changeover contact to finish.
Hope this helps

I had the same problem on my 89 635 when my battery went dead. I followed the handbook instructions, but not all the settings stored, such as avg mpg, distance, etc. If you have the same problem Try a tip my local specialist told me. Disconnect the poitive terminal on the battery, then switch on the ignition, reconnect the battery terminal, and then enter all the settings as usual. I have used this procedure a few times over the years and it has worked every time.

most likely a shot PCB in the instrument cluster. Did you ever change the batteries in there?

i was thinking that they needed to be replaced. but other than the unability of the reset they work normally

well normally is different than perfectly. the lights work and its in the orange and red and the number of red lights that flash differ. but sometimes the whole thing will flash constantly very quickly. how much is it to replace the SI board??

I would be curious to know as well, just for future needs if they occur.
BTW wokke, kinda jealous of your stable man. :D
You got Ellis beat (in volume) by a pair of nice 5er's.

no big deal, but sort of time consuming because taking out the instrument cluster requires to lower the steering column:
Remove steering wheel.
Remove cover under the dashboard
Loosen two 13mm nuts which hold the steering column in plase.
Push the steering column downwards to get the necessary clearance to pull the instrument cluster after having taken out two screws on each side (behind a plastic strip/cover).
Disassemble instrument cluster to get access to the PCB
Sometimes leaking batteries destroy the PCB but if you know how to use a solder iron you can even repair it.
That's it.
