I've got some questions about the 8 that I'm hoping you guys can help me with. I've found e31.net and the wikipedia entry on 8-series, but if there's a more comprehensive source on technical data please direct me there.

First, I understand the 6-speed comes mated with a 2.65 FDR in the differential. Is this a LSD or open? Is it easy for the shade-tree mechanic to replace it with a higher ratio, like the 2.93 from the euro spec or the 3.65 from the auto? If any of you have already done it, how do you like it?

Next, has anyone successfully mated BMW's AHK to a US Spec 8?

Finally, what are the engine differences between the 850i and the Alpina Coupe 5.0? They use the same engine, right? But the Alpina pushes out a lot more torque. According to e31.net the displacement and b/s are the same, but the compression ratio is higher. I assume this is achieved by using different pistons? Is this the only difference that accounts for the increased torque?

Thanks for your responses, and if a 'search, noob' is in order I'll oblige and hang my head in shame.
