View Full Version : 328 vs WRX - What the heck??
LinearX 03-20-2003, 07:57 PM Plainly, a Subby WRX is faster than my car. Today when I went at it with one (BAD ME - I am not much for street racing, long story) multiple times from 70-110 today I pulled on him every time. Not much, but still a pull.
My car is an automatic with a PAR intake, SuperSprint exhaust, and probably a very fuel thirsty adaptive ECU. He plainly was trying so I just don't get this at all. I know they get somewhat slower up there above 60, but this just can't be right, can it?
This is just a top-end test, it's obvious what he'd do to me off the line - but still. Nowhere should my car be faster than a WRX, except MAYBE top speed (?) even if it was automatic model. What are your experiences with that car?
I'm going to have to pull the BS flag here - on myself!
:bs:
slickav 03-21-2003, 12:34 AM Ive heard some stories about these being real slow top end, but......Hmmmmmm, I have a E36 328i Auto. soooooo........... something fishy going on. Maybe they actually are slow top end?
nickz 03-21-2003, 01:58 AM how do you know he was trying if it was a auto?
LinearX 03-21-2003, 02:50 AM I don't know if his car was automatic, I am just trying to think of reasons why he lost. People don't pull up in line with you, then accelerate from 70 to 110+mph multiple times if they're not racing. Honestly, I couldn't hear his throttle, my car was too loud when I was winding it out.
I have heard that they lose steam bigtime above 60, but if a 328 can pull on it above 60, I am surprised to say the least. He had very dark tint, but that was probably his only mod since I hear the first few mods anyone does to these helps alleviate the 60mph+ 'slowness'. (still a damn quick car)
I'd be very interested to hear if anyone else has been able to do some surprising damage to one of these at speed. I've driven one and they're fun, but it seems like the gear he might have been using on me at those speeds is a bit tall.
FrankW 03-21-2003, 05:59 AM if they are stock, they are fairly quick off the line, but slow to pick up more speed at high speed. Without mods, that little 2.0 liter 4 cyclinder doesn't do much at freeway speed.
even my modded 325auto beat a stock wrx on the freeway before :)
LinearX 03-21-2003, 10:46 AM What kind of mods were (are?) on the 325ia?
k-dog 03-21-2003, 11:32 AM I have a slightly modified 330 MANUAL....i raced a wrx which had exhaust, i "think" a boost controller and some exterior stuff. We raced from 60-140. I got the jump, but he kept up with me without losing any ground all the way to 140. I have raced another one, and flat out smoked it. I have been handed my ass by one from a stoplight. And i have handed a couple their asses from a slow roll....It all depends on how modified they are, the driver, transmission. A unmodified, auto wrx with a bad driver could be your explanation. However, an even more likely explanation would be that it was the 2.5 litre NA subaru, which looks EXACTLY like the wrx....hell sometimes they even put the wrx badge so ppl think they have a quick car...
Whatup1049 03-21-2003, 12:02 PM Ya the Subaru 2.5 RS or something liek that only has 162 HP AT THE CRANK. Its horribly slow but looks almost identical to a WRX. All some one would have to do really is put a WRX badge on it. Later this year the WRX STi is coming out and that will be a totally different story. 300 HP and 300 Tq. at the crank and a 6 speed!:buttrock
dave is cool 03-21-2003, 12:10 PM I didn't even know the WRX came in automatic
i ran a wrx in a 97 maxima in 3rd gear from 60-110 just for a joke.. and i know he was racing.. cuz we slowed down from 90 to 60 after the road opened up... i turned off OD and went WOT... i was 1 or 2 car back all the way up to 110... maybe the guy was in wrong gear.. who knows..
1. WRX could have just been a 2.5rs
2. WRX could have been Auto
3. Maybe they really are that slow above 60mph.
LinearX 03-21-2003, 01:37 PM I would have brought up the rebadge thing, but I didn't kill him bad enough for it to have been a 2.5. I don't think that type of black comes on a 2.5, among other things that just didn't seem to be a ricer rebadge.
The launch on them reminds me of launching a Syclone. Not as brutal obviously, but still a nice AWD hookup. They're cool cars, but I just don't think I'd want to live with it day to day, especially if that's the stock performance at higher speeds. Don't get me wrong, it's not a slouch, but I'm more seeing myself in a built NA car, like a M3 with pulleys, software, Euro HFM and CAI, etc.
These are only like $25,000 cars aren't they? The temptation is there.. :aroused

Thanks b0rf. :laugh I am thinking #2, but so is my car so both vehicles would have the same disadvantage..
WebDev 03-21-2003, 02:13 PM I have a 98 328i and I've driven my cousin's WRX. Both cars are 5 speeds and I must say that the WRX is pretty fast. I'm certain it is faster than the 328 on the highway. I did six hours of driving in the WRX when I drove it down to my cousin's new place in Virginia and the only thing I can say is that they don't pull hard if the RPMs are low. Gotta keep it in 4th at highway speeds to build boost and make good power.
If he had an auto that would probably explain it as the stock auto dogs out the car badly from what I hear because of the poor shift points.
Off the line and to 120 the WRX will beat the 328i easily.
Easy way to tell the WRX from the 2.5 RS is the bug eyed front end of the WRX. The 2.5 slants down into a rectangular front face while the WRX has tall rounded front fenders with round headlights.
z 318is 03-21-2003, 03:12 PM I think he's talking about the new age bug eyed RSs. They look exactly like the WRX minus the special colors, only single tipped exhaust, and no hood scoop ( i think their hood is steel ).
Auto WRXs are pretty slow. I'm betting that's what it was.
They have massive drivetrain loss from the automatic, THEN they have to turn their whole AWD system plus 4 wheels. I think stock auto WRXs dyno at like 140-150awhp - which is just sad on a ~3000lb car.
It takes quite a bit of work just to get one into the 13's(auto WRX that is), even though they can still do ~1.8sec 60' times on street tires by doing a brake stand.
LinearX 03-21-2003, 07:04 PM His car had the same paint job (as far as I can tell) as yours Z.
jesd325is 03-21-2003, 07:09 PM the one in my sig with a few mods :) is capable of pulling all the way to 120 with no problem. before the mods it died off once you shifted to 4th at around 90.
i know the 14.4 is not impressive to many of you, but at 4000ft above sea level and hanging with new trans-ams and camaros, it is.
when i had the basic intake/chip/exhaust and it was stock we were pretty much stuck with no one gaining on the other at high speeds. of course it held the 2-3 car jump cause of the awd launches.
and yes they do come in auto's sadly, just like ///M3's
WebDev 03-21-2003, 09:28 PM I think he's talking about the new age bug eyed RSs.
Right, yeah, forgot they changed the look for all the cars. Heh, don't see too many of the new 2.5rs cars now that the WRX is around so I never thought about it. In fact, I can't remember having ever seen one.

Saw some website where they had an auto WRX doing 9 second runs in the quarter. Some crazy tuner car.

Hrmmmm... you sure it's an auto? It can't be the factory 4EAT tranny, because that thing would probably puke its torque converter at around 350-400hp - and it's going to take close to twice that to run 9's.
I guess you can slap a powerglide on anything though... :biglaughb
