bmwperson 10-06-2007, 03:19 PM Time to build yet another engine, this time for myself ;)
M52 block
S52 crank
S52 head, 1mm oversized valves, port and polish etc
135mm Arrow rods
Oring gasket
Every single bolt on realoem I could find ;)
and so on ;)

a32guy 10-06-2007, 03:38 PM Now THAT is an engine build. Beautiful. Looking forward to see how the oring gasket works out. Keep up the good work.
achew 10-06-2007, 03:40 PM dayyyymm, that shit is hawt. how much you spend ?
GGray 10-06-2007, 03:41 PM What head gasket it that?
m3j0n 10-06-2007, 03:42 PM thats beautiful!
MRMARSH 10-06-2007, 04:22 PM sweet build...similar to mine =D
bmwperson 10-06-2007, 04:27 PM ty, gasket is from PPF, thanks andreas...
I'm really curious how its gonna work out also, Andreas had great results with it so i don't see why i wouldn't.
Only concern is that if there is any discrepancy between the thickness of the rings and the actuall gasket aka the rings are too tall, you wouldnt squash the gasket enough to provide a seal for all the coolant and oil galleries.
Me and my bud Mike devised an ingenious way to test it... ok maybe no that ingenious ... I will use a pressure ball to fill and pressurize all the galleries and check for leaks before installing the engine.
Worst comes to worst I will be oringing those as well or I would try to reroute the oil from the block to the head with some external lines...
GGray 10-06-2007, 04:50 PM I might do a PPF gasket on mine. I will be curious to see how it works out. I kow you machine the block.
Are they the Pyramid looking ones?
I thought about using a dowel type set up for some of the water jackets since they tend to go bad at number 6.
trthrrt489 10-06-2007, 04:54 PM What size studs???

TTe30m3 10-06-2007, 05:01 PM looks great... i'm envious. What is the advantage of the S52 crank over the M52? Thanks
5mall5nail5 10-06-2007, 06:09 PM I PM'd andreas asking what the PPF gasket/rings go for... he told me..... $1000 USD
95RogueM3 10-06-2007, 06:33 PM Why the second engine build? It solely so you can utilize the PPF gasket? :confused
fishforlife 10-06-2007, 07:39 PM looks great... i'm envious. What is the advantage of the S52 crank over the M52? Thanks
someone will correct me but he will have more stroke and the added benefit of a forged crank. if i recall correctly if the old displacement was 2.5 with s52 crank it should be 2.9ish now. but he does have new rods too....so this makes all the above information probably wrong if it wasnt already...but you have some light to why now.
bmwperson 10-06-2007, 07:44 PM the first time around i set the ring gap a bit too high so i had to warm up the car every time to drive it... that was annoying
plus at 30psi the gasket had tiny coolant leaks to the combustion camber. This might have been caused by 20 minute highway pulls agains an evo where the engine was knocking like a mofo...
studs are 11mm and I will be using L19s but so far after ordering i was informed that there is 3 month wait.. so im using arp2000 alloy temporarily.
Looks like fun!
Your last build was nice, I expect no less :).
OBD1 2.8L 10-06-2007, 07:52 PM Nice set up....maybe you should get a different turbo...ill find a buyer :)
M52 POWER! 10-06-2007, 07:56 PM AWESOME! I'm jealous.
trthrrt489 10-06-2007, 08:08 PM Tom is a pimp, and this motor is going to unreal. I am jealous.
For those that don't know Tom has either built, or helped build the majority (3+) of the high whp BMW motors running around Chicago.

Well whats the trade-off?
High reliable horsepower potential?
Great seal for high horsepower. I mean they do have 8-9-1000 rwhp cars.
You have to pay to play bottom line...

Well the man's company puts out superb super high rwhp cars. I have had nothing but the best things to say about their products..
But if you have a cheaper product that gives you the results ya need....god bless ya...
Ya build will be done in the next 3-4 weeks right..?

I understand his quality is there and proven, but it's just too much for me unfortunately.
My build is getting f-d with all the other shit I am doing for people - ceramic coating, powder coating, car meets/shows... i hope to have it done real soon.

Best of luck with that....
Its good that your busy with different stuff....
Just looking forward to your build...quite honestly....I hope that you get some good numbers and ya tuning package goes well...
Your doing....yu do have a little attitude with the stuff that you say...but that is ok...ya just need to get your car fully tuned with numbers...
You have a great amount of MS packages out there ....30 plus....congrats on that....
But with all that your doing with the motor all the prepping and stuff your doing...I actually want you to get a good number
Which I would think is around rwhp450-500....on the dyno that produces the lowest numbers....
Good luck...

Some have more attitude than others!
450-500 is not going to satisfy my quest using a PT76GTS and tubular manifold :( I will not stop there
m3mobbin 10-06-2007, 11:49 PM Damn, you didn't cut any corners, that is gunna be one crazy motor when you are finished. What's displacement with the S52 crank?

Are you using custom pistons?
Shuasha 10-07-2007, 01:22 PM Are you using custom pistons?
You have to.
BL0WNM3 10-07-2007, 07:34 PM looks good cant wait to see more
bmwperson 10-14-2007, 06:11 AM Small update,
I didn't have much time over the past week to do stuff on the engine but today I got some time in.
I got longer ARP studs to accomodate the engine girdle, the main caps were torqued down and the clearances checked with and without the girdle.
The oil pump needed some clearancing but that wasn't a big issue, it fits pretty good but I will have to make a bracket to hold the oil pickup tube to one of the main caps... it shouldn't be too big of a deal.
I am still debating using the splash guard shield on top of the engine girdle... not sure about that one. We will see how much work is it to make it fit.
I had the engine block thread serted as I will be using bigger studs... only problem with this is that I will have to shorten the dowels otherwise the head isn't going to go on there nicely...
By end of tomorrow I am hoping to have it done...
some pics:
Main caps with longer studs along with 7mm spacers on top of the caps
http://makulski.org/build2/resize/IMG_0625-11.JPG
Pistons hanged on the rods, After checking the oil ring clearances those were installed as well...

Plastigage for the final time(with girdle torqued)
http://makulski.org/build2/resize/IMG_0625-19.JPG
and its show time: girdle in place, torqued down. oil pump chain has to be installed ahead of time. The oil pump was clearanced ahead of this but before torquing down make sure it fits nicely in the girdle... I did three full torque-loosen sequences to get everything settled nicely(recommended per ARP)

I also managed to get a piece of 6061 t6 aluminum... a rather large piece 14'x5' and a hayabusa bike/parts ;) (check out the l33t strap down idea, it didnt fit on the focking trailer)

e28forlife 10-14-2007, 07:01 AM That first picture is awesome. Looks like a great build.
What does the girdle do? Extra support for the crank?
What PSI are you aiming for? HP?
Man, I'm thinking I really need a turbo m52 e30. This build and card counters videos have me inspired.
UltimateM 10-14-2007, 07:40 AM The build looks great! Where did you source your crank girdle from?
trthrrt489 10-14-2007, 10:24 AM Jesus.............
You got a Busa sitting in your garage.
:help
Julz69 10-14-2007, 12:45 PM I was debating making a gokart outta it ;) id be fun to drive around the track, put wheelie bars on it.
Looking to do the same thing over winter.
Very nice build btw and good luck.
SiGmA 10-14-2007, 01:49 PM What does the girdle do? Extra support for the crank?I too was wondering what the girdle does. Looks like the build is coming along very well tho, I'm stoked for you! What are your power goals again?
BMWManiac 10-14-2007, 02:43 PM I want one...build mine next! Its only a 5 hour drive for me.
jmargo 10-14-2007, 03:13 PM Due to the girdle thickness do you need to move the oil pick-up lower ?
Concentric190 10-14-2007, 08:50 PM WTF LOL!!!!
tom you're fuckin nuts
bmwperson 10-15-2007, 12:51 AM some more progress, the shortblock is assembled.
Today started off rather interesting
I finished checking the main bearing specs(all 7 of them, 4 times each)
Then it was time to file fit the rings
http://makulski.org/build2/10142007/IMG_0627.JPG
That took a good 3 hours. specs were .023 for top rings, .027 for 2nd and .015 for oil scrapers
Finally I dropped the pistons in; I was kinda concerned about the grooves for the headgasket orings as they are not tapered but they went in fine for most part.
http://makulski.org/build2/10142007/IMG_0632.JPG
All of the rod bearings were checked for bearing clearances
http://makulski.org/build2/10142007/IMG_0644.JPG
Then I had to address the oil pump pickup that was close to the girdle and would rattle....
so from 2 oil pump brackets I made one ;)
http://makulski.org/build2/10142007/IMG_0636.JPG
http://makulski.org/build2/10142007/IMG_0642.JPG
looking purty
http://makulski.org/build2/10142007/IMG_0625.JPG
That was about it, tomorrow I need to "retrieve" my dial indicator check the axial play on the crankshaft and figure out my block to head dowel problem...
bmwperson 10-15-2007, 02:22 AM also any opinions on using the splash shield?
and does anyone have a tq spec for the arrow rods, i went off from memory so just trying to confirm.
trthrrt489 10-15-2007, 06:50 PM That engine is teh hot!

bmwperson 10-16-2007, 03:04 AM Maybe I missed it....what does the girdle do?
increases strength/rigidity of the main caps,
Not much of an update, I have a focking major headache so I didn't do much.
Camera is out of batteries so no pics.
I got some OVERNIGHT PARTS FROM JAPAN so the end is near! aka the EVC PRO boost controller with programable boost curves, boost per gear, boost per mph etc etc all solenoid driven. My old one worked like a charm this just has a few more options.
I ended up not installing the windage tray as the stock one would have needed major modifications along with a few new mounting points. Oh well next time.
So the bottom end is done, pan is on and everything is buttoned up. I put the head on and I am doing the torque spec, then timing it shouldn't take long at all.
I will try pushing the stock m3 cams but per CC/George I think 800sh is the limit.
got psi 10-16-2007, 10:47 AM Good stuff Jap parts OH NOES LOL ///J.T.///
Geno325is 10-16-2007, 10:53 AM were gonna need two bottles tom... :firechick
jszy25 10-16-2007, 11:22 AM Good luck with the build. Cant wait to see it all buttoned up.
5mall5nail5 10-16-2007, 11:25 AM So wait did you ultimately end up not installing the tray?
bmwperson 10-16-2007, 12:00 PM So wait did you ultimately end up not installing the tray?
correct, It would require quite a bit of work, new holes, drilling tapping and even then I would end up with 2/3 of the orginal size.
bmwperson 10-16-2007, 12:06 PM http://www.xspeed.com.au/imagess/tech/14/4.jpg
43psi, peak/hold, boost curves per tps, mph and gear, atmospheric pressure correction etc etc ;) i sure hope it will work just as well as my evc4.
5mall5nail5 10-16-2007, 12:08 PM correct, It would require quite a bit of work, new holes, drilling tapping and even then I would end up with 2/3 of the orginal size.
you're not worried about all the turbulence that it will create?
bmwperson 10-16-2007, 12:15 PM you're not worried about all the turbulence that it will create?
worst that will happen is I'll loose 10hp and some oil foaming, maybe the crankcase will see a bit more oil spray.
bmwperson 10-18-2007, 02:00 AM I finally got done with work and had some time to finish up this engine.

You realize what is going to happen 1 mile after break-in..
We are comming over with 5 gallons of C16, and taking it to the dynojet. You can come if you want.
We'll have Vic's ass awake and paid in Cali with his notebook on.
This thing is going going to put numbers down...............I have no control anymore.........this compulsion is bigger than all of us.......... :(
a32guy 10-18-2007, 09:47 AM Sillynice. When do you think you'll have the engine in? Came out great, nice work.
bmwperson 10-18-2007, 12:34 PM I need to make a few minor modifications to the manifold and clean up the engine bay. Probably tomorrow or over weekend.
5mall5nail5 10-18-2007, 12:39 PM PT7x are taking over the warld!
CosmoE36 10-18-2007, 01:12 PM Tom, is that the original Chris Mantis manifold? or did you change it out? what modifications do you have planned for the manifold?
you arent still keeping AC are you? thats the only reason i had to have the manifold modified and have the dump piping rerouted.

bmwperson 10-19-2007, 11:58 AM today I will be dropping the engine, I just have to finish up the wg tubing and some other minor stuff.
and I got some brand new SSRs so shiny.
http://makulski.org/build2/resize/IMG_0500.JPG
only 16.5lbs not like it matters.
m3jasper 10-19-2007, 12:04 PM Awesome wheels! I've trying to get my hands on a set but they are no longer being made. Where did you pick yours up?
bmwperson 10-19-2007, 12:43 PM another member had a brand new set. It was this vs comp-h we'll see. The major thing is that they will fit with a 265 on em.
bmwperson 10-21-2007, 01:53 AM fricking I spent all day building shit ;)
a SMALL torch, since my big one was decent for bench welding but getting around the collector was impossible; 15 lbs of welding rod, some grinders and misc cutting utensils
wg tube is mounted and i ported the collector a bit.

just hit it with a big mallet:D
bmwperson 10-26-2007, 12:58 AM just hit it with a big mallet:D
3" fits fine, 3.5 would fit if you used oval tubing. I will be fitting 4" with no body modifications over winter tho ;)
other then that:
not much of an update, my plasma got here along with a few other things. I finished up the wiring harness and some misc stuff around the engine bay.
Clutch is next but I didn't feel like crawling under the car today... being sick sucks.
miller spectrum 625, had fun cutting 1/2 plate. Surprisingly with a nice (motor guard) filter it cuts really nice and clean.
Now I just need make a decent stand for the welder/plasma a cooler and a new fricking table as this one blows.

You can probably look around online and find an english version. I had to do that with my Blitz SBCID III.
bmwperson 10-26-2007, 08:27 AM hks evc pro, I had to reindex half of HKSes site to get the JP version which is like 300 pages lol

I will probably run my 35r for the remainder of the year... which is about 2 weeks. Next year I will see, so far a 76 will fit there so I got a bunch of choices. I will be remaking the manifold anyway so we'll see.
