Potentially picking up a car in Baltimore, don't plan on registering it, but leaving it at our team shop in Tallahassee, Florida while it is being built. How would I go about getting a tag for the car to drive it from MD -> FL? My DD is registered in VA, and my primary residence is listed there, as well.

MD doesnt issue transit tags. You could see if Florida issues a transit tag since that is where the car is going.

Could I get one from VA, potentially?

or slap your tags on there and be very careful and drive it all the way down ;). I'm a cheap bastard and would try it.

Best thing would be to have it transported. I bet if you tell Fla DMV about it they are going to make you pay taxes on it.

You should be able to get VA transit tags, they look like the red paper 30 day tags, but they are blue

I've thought about it. Don't know how good of an idea that is, really.

FLA DMV will never know about this car. It'll get registered in VA if it ever is to see street duty.

Yeah, but since the car isn't going to directly be registered in VA, is this possible? More info? I saw 3-day transit tags, but not really sure if that is enough.

Does it have valid Maryland tags now?

In Maryland you are permitted to use the previous owners tags for 7 days from the day of purchase to transport. When I did it, I called the Maryland DMV and the Lady told me to write out an agreement and what specifically to put on it. There may be an online for for this now.

Most owners are reluctant to do this.

How much does it cost to register it? Is it really that big a deal?

If you really want to save the money, transfer the tags from your car to the new one and then back again.

Note that in PA they won't register a car/issue tags without proof of insurance.

im pretty sure if you have the bill of sale you are fine as long as it has a license plate so you dont get pulled over ever hour or so. but they say you have 15-30 days to register depending on the state so you can't get in trouble for not registering it until then.

VA will issue you a transit tag. You can do it on the website and print it out. Technically you're not supposed to go to FL with it but you should be fine if you're careful and don't get pulled over.

Every time I've bought a car, I just put a valid set of tags on it and drove it back. It's not the right way to do it, but since MD is such a pain in the ass about transporting and registering cars, sometimes it's the only option. Not every PO wants to let you use their tags. I sure as hell wouldn't let someone take my tags.

FWIW, I drove around on tags for an old car on my 540i for about a month and not once got pulled over. This was also with no front plate or safety inspection sticker. :lol

But then again, I got pulled over (and ticketed) in my E30 325iS in my first week of ownership 'cause I was driving on brand new (registered to that car) tags but with no front plate or sticker. Guess it's a matter of luck. With my E34 I was fairly careful to avoid being directly behind, in front of, or within mirror view of any cops.

I got pulled over in Fairfax after buying my NSX. I had tags on it from my BMW at the time, I told the officer I just bought the car, showed them the bill of sale, etc and they were fine with it. Legally I was in the wrong to have the BMW's tag on it but if you're not attracting attention or giving them a reason to pull you over I think it's worth the risk.
