im just wondering what other sixsers MPG is so i can see if mine is normal or below. last time i got 15 MPG but that was with some (around 20%) highway driving.

Your a little below what we saw in our euro, but that has a different trans and final drive than what your car has I think.

The 78 633 on its drive back only got 18 mpg on regular with all highway miles around 70 mph.

its that bad?? the manual says that it gets like mid twenties on freeway.

I've got the euro 635csi, I estimate the mileage at around 18 with highway miles and an avg speed of 80mph. My odo is broken, so I can't say with any degree of certainty. Somewhere around half a tank for about a 180 mile trip.

I think it could get in the mid 20's with only highway cruising and speeds below 70 mph. The city driving really kills the fuel economy.

I know the gearing on our 79 635 euro doesn't have an over drive gear which hurts. What is the gear ratio for your 5th gear and differential? Both will have an impact.

'87 635, 5 speed manual. It's getting 21.5 mpg in mixed city and highway driving after I've worked on it (used to get 19.5). At one time I was commuting 200 miles every weekend and was getting 28 mpg on the interstate in overdrive with the cruse set.

I throw 25 bucks of super in and it fills me up nice, I would guess I get about 20mpg?

ill check what the gear ratio is tomorrow. its somethin like .86 to 1 for fifth. but i have no idea what the Limited slip differential numbers are. it kinda seems like im gonna average around 12 this tank of gas. which is terrible.

City Average = 17mpg
City Peak = 19mpg

Highway Average = 22mpg
Highway Peak = 24.3mpg

Mix City/Highway Average = 19mpg
Mix City/Highway Peak = 19.2mpg

OUCH...and that motor calls for 93? I wonder how many of the new bmws have to run on high pump octane.

My car was called to run on 87, so thats what i do. I get about 15 to 17 city, i coast a lot, and these past trips i might have hit 20mpg highway, but i think it was more like 18. My average speed was really high though, at 70 it goes up and over 20mpg...

I get 17.6 MPG (according to the computer), mostly city driving with a lot of coasting. I've heard of a 535is that gets the salt driven out of it which gets 22 MPG; I'm starting to think that at least with my car, I get better or similar mileage if I drive fast, rather than driving economically at low RPMs. It could be the overfueling/high fuel pressure on the car, I mean, if I rev the engine up it's using the gas that would have been wasted anyways. Ha, well, that's just me.

I think these cars should get about 20 MPG city or highway.

is this for the old sixer or new sixer?

Actually, since the 90's (as I recall) Bimmers have asked for 91 minimum octane. Very few gas stations serve 91, so we Bimmer owners have to use 93; some +/- 10 cent differential.

wow, that's pretty much what i get in my E24, slightly better city driving, but pretty much the same.

i'm surprised to see such low mileages on this thread...do you guys just flog the hell out of your 6er's? ever changed your fuel filter?

I get about 13 or 14 mpg in both city and highway driving on my 88 M6. In sole highway driving, I can get a good 21 mpg. These figures have not change much, if at all in the 15 years since I own the car.

I drive my 6er a lot. I take car of it too... I take is to 6er Sharkfest every year and other back road twisties. I think my current mileage is good but I agree with today's technology you think we could get better MPG.:rolleyes

I know the mileage doesn't sound great but these new sixers have big V8s and even though gas efficiency overall for many cars haven't made dramatic change, I am please to know my V8 equals or is better in many cases than most V6s out there; not the classic Shark but more along the line of these newer cars out there...

Did you hear or read what our congress is asking the automotive industry to accomplish in the coming double-digit years? I believe they are asking for average/minimum of 35/30mpg... Wow! See below.

The Senate Commerce Committee has drawn up a bill that sets a target of raising fuel efficiency to a fleet-wide average of 35 miles per gallon by the model year 2020 for cars and lights trucks (SUVs). However, a proposed amendment by Sens. Levin and Stabenow threatens to undermine the bi-partisan compromise reached by the Senate Commerce Committee and drastically weaken and delay mileage improvements.

The average household is going to shell out more than $3200 this year on gas. An average fuel efficiency standard of 35 miles per gallon will save a typical family more than $500 annually.

We (as in all auto manufacturers) could do that, it would just involve some cool technology and some cold hard cash:cool

I have taken a few long distance trips in my Alpina and got 24-25 and most of the cruising was at 80mph. One of the benefits of the 2.93:1 final drive.

My 635 averages about 18-20 with mixed driving.

update. for 13.5 mpg in city. think its time for some new injectors. best place to find them? should i clean the ones i have for 20 bucks each or are brand new ones better?

I've been looking around because I need to do something with my injectors also, here is what I've found:

WitchHunter - Complete Injector tear-down, cleaning, rebuild and flow testing, they send back a chart showing the flow before and after the cleaning - $17/injector or $102/set +$8 shipping. Go through their website, they have a lot of interesting info on injectors and their cleaning process with pics. Make sure you read the section about the difference between a proper cleaning and remanufacturing, there is none!: http://witchhunter.com/ (http://witchhunter.com/)

Alternate site, also $17/injector but don't get sucked in to their " Remanufactured" injectors here, see above: http://www.accurateis.com/products.php?cat=10

FiveOMotorSport - A set of the newer replacement #19 "Mustang" injectors, $240/set of 6 +$12 shipping ($252): http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsBMW.asp (http://www.fiveomotorsport.com/Injector_SetsBMW.asp)

They also have sets of the "Design III" injectors, but don't recommend them unless you've done engine work.

The #19 "Mustang" injectors also come up on eBay for around $100 but they are used and I'm not sure I would want to put them on my car with out knowing anything about them, so if you send them out to get cleaned and flow tested for another $100 you might as well buy the new ones.

AutoHausAZ - OEM replacement, Bosch 0280150714 - $295 (free shipping) http://www.autohausaz.com/search/product.aspx?sid=fzwojsahtgpdke45wxuigh45&partnumber=%200280150714

I think my (1987 L6) has different gearing.
According to the OBC the car got between 25 and
30 MPG. I didn't drive much over 70 . It was all
highway. I paid the seller , buckeled in
and drove straight from Chicago to Dallas.

I did not measure the fuel vs. the mileage, but
relied on the dash MPG needle and the On Board Computer.

The tach on my L6 is barely over 2 Grand cruising at under
70 MPH. I feel its quite accurate because I still have the
TRX wheels and tires on it. Its fun because you can floor it
at 70 and the car just seems to jump to 100 in no time.

Someone told me that the L6 is designed for a fast cruise speed

I think he is correct.

No matter what I do or where I drive, it's 19-21 mpg. Every. Time. Never better, never worse. I've never had a car that cared so LITTLE about how I drive it when it comes to fuel consumption.

clean the injectors, it is much cheaper

My 79 635 with 3.07 and a 5sp CR got average( prolly 30/70city highway) of about 20, I saw as high as 27 on the highway. Strangely, after the custom engine rebuild with cam mods it got better mileage. I put the stock cam back in just to see and it went down

This is just going by the OBC and it generally stays right around 19.5 combined. If I'm really putting it to the paces that figure will drop.
