I'm getting ready to do my first oil change and from what I've read I've decided on Mobil1 0w40. Now the problem is trying to find it. I've checked a few stores already without any luck. Can someone tell me where to get it.
Thanks

Last time I used it I bought it from canadian tire.....that was about 2 yrs ago. Why are you going with 0w40?

We get ours from McEwens Esso on 142nd Street. But thats for work and I'm not sure if they sell to retail customers. Give them a try though.

I decided on the oil after reading the sticky at the top of the E36 forum (in the FAQ)
As for the Esso on 142st, do they have 0w40 or do they just carry Mobil1?

As far as I know they've got everything. We use the 0W40 syn in the new Jeep CDI and its 2/3 the cost of CryCo. I think I got 5W50 in my 540.

Canadian tire carries that weight of oil and if they don't have it in stock, you can have it ordered in (takes about a week) from back east. You can also see if they have the Castrol 5-40 which is pretty similar to the MB-1 but if you can get the MB-1 it is probably a slightly better oil.

I stopped by McEwens Esso (I actually went to the south side location) and picked up the 0W40 oil. Good price too ($49/ 6L case). I'm not sure about there other weights but I think that it would be cheaper than what you'd pay at CanTire.
I'm curious, why did you decide to go with 0w40?

After a lot of reading (including the FAQ thread at the top of the E36 forum) I determined that there was only a handful of oils that met all the specs set out by BMW, mainly the viscosities over the temperature ranges. Between the them I chose Mobil 1 cause I hate having to buy stuff from the dealership, I had no idea where to start looking for the Castrol/Royal Purple/Amzoil, and I was familiar with the Mobil 1 product.
I also believe that the BMW engineers know there stuff and there's a reason why that weight of oil Mobil 1 is the only one approved for use in BMW engines.

mopac auto on the west end (170th st and about 104ave) has Royal purple and some of the other big names..
Royal purple or amsoil seem to be excellent oil. cost for RP is about $7/quart if you buy a case from them. Good price and the stuff works great.
