Hello all,

I have a 2001 X5 4.4.... what a pain in the neck, I have only had the car about 4 months. Each month there is something new. I keep on getting check coolent level on my dash screen. I have checked the coolent level, the level was slightly lower then normal, but nothing significant. I add a little bit of coolent until the floating stick was at the right level. I continue to get "check coolant level" on my dash periodcally. I checked the level again, its fine. Is this a another trip to the dealer to have them reset the light? or is there anyway to reset the light yourself? Better yet, why does the light come on the dash in the first place if the coolent level is fine.

Any answers?

Thanks

Does the warning happen when it is cold or hot? Fill the cooling system when cold.
The light will not need to be reset. It is sensing that the cooling system is low on coolant. As you stated, the level is good when the warning is on the check-control. First, I would take a look at the sensor itself. There are known issues with the bracket that holds the expansion tank actually binding with the base of the coolant level sensor and connector. Thus damaging the sensor. You might want to check the sensor and bracket clearance. If the sensor is touching the braket, maybe trim or somehow create space. Just becareful with the small brittle coolant hose that runs along side the expansion tank! A small tap will crack that hose if it is still the original hose. Hopefully this information helps you out!
