View Full Version : Getting windows tinted
JGs00528i 09-27-2007, 05:48 PM For those of you that are tinted, did you go the same level of tint on all of your windows or do the fronts differ from the rear windows and/or back window Just curious what others have done. I know different states have different laws that might have dictated what you did. I am trying to stay well below what is legal to avoid unwanted po po attention. So I am going with 50% on the front 2 windows. But I am leaning towards a 35% for all of the rear windows. Not sure how I feel about the "fade" effect.

00BMW540i6 09-27-2007, 05:49 PM Do the same for all windows. Looks weird otherwise IMO.
98bimmer 09-27-2007, 06:01 PM ya i have 35% on all windows except windshield
ya i have 35% on all windows except windshield
Any pics? That is the percentage I'm considering.
sunnywala 09-27-2007, 06:10 PM Do the same for all windows. Looks weird otherwise IMO.
+1
I have 20% all around..love it
Fiziks 09-27-2007, 06:13 PM I'm going to get 35% all around soon :)
S.Spec 09-27-2007, 06:28 PM 35% is not too dark at all. Still allows everyone to see inside your car while just blocking a bit of the UV rays.
I run 15% all around, although the one time I've been pulled over in 3 years for it, I was told by the officer it registered as 14%. :D No ticket!
Whatever you do, do the same all the way around. It looks shoddy when the front are tinted less.
sunnywala 09-27-2007, 06:39 PM also if u get pulled over, just roll down your front windows before the cop walks upto the car
S.Spec 09-27-2007, 06:50 PM also if u get pulled over, just roll down your front windows before the cop walks upto the car
+1. In most states, tint tickets are "fix-it tickets", meaning even if you do get pulled over, and even if you do actually get a ticket from some cop who doesnt have a damn better thing to do then waste innocent taxpayers time/$$, then if you fix the tint or peal it off before your court date they wont carge you with anything.
I know a number of people who'll just pay it since they figure they'll get 1 ticket every few years and can have their tint as dark as they'd like. "Tint tax" is what they refer to it as. :cool
98bimmer 09-27-2007, 06:50 PM ya ill try to get a pic
brandon5069 09-27-2007, 07:03 PM light tint ftw :buttrock
MunichMobile 09-27-2007, 07:25 PM I've got the same all around. I think it's 60%. I know it's legal in TX.
My 528i was darker (probably illegal), but I like this better.
xxpanipuri 09-27-2007, 07:37 PM i have 35% all around formula one ceramic tint.
front windows are illegal in CA but i tinted them anyways.
why?
1) i don't want the car to look un even.
2) i normally drive around with sunroof shade open or even the sunroof open.
3) i don't drive the car much...
35% dyed tint which would have been half the price would look ALOT darker
even with my ALL black interior. (you can see the last shot)
you can see right thru it and in that pic i have the sunshade up in the front windshield too.
usually as long as cops can see your face you're good.
when i'm parked with the sunshade on the front window/sunroof sunshade closed and the rear shades up the interior of my car stays relatively cool and not much light gets in!

xxpanipuri 09-27-2007, 07:47 PM if i were you'd i'd do 50% on side windows and go darker on the back window
that way you won't notice the difference as much as you would if you did the sides in 50%/front and 35%/rear
gdizzle 09-27-2007, 08:17 PM eh i never follow the % numbers.. but whatever corresponds to light, medium, dark and "limo"
anyways on my other e39 i had medium all around and was good
then redid it with medium on sides, and dark or rear window because its the biggest window and lets the most light in. I stared at it in many different lights, and so did a couple of my friends, and we couldnt tell it was a different shade. yet it was darker than my medium all around
gdizzle 09-27-2007, 08:19 PM btw, i'm planning on getting mine done on my new e39.
I'm planning on either medium all around again. or medium sides and dark on rear window
nc540 09-27-2007, 08:27 PM if i were you'd i'd do 50% on side windows and go darker on the back window
that way you won't notice the difference as much as you would if you did the sides in 50%/front and 35%/rear
That's what I did, but I went 35 on all sides, and 20 on the rear window. Everyone that I point the difference out to says, "Oh, really?" It's nearly impossible to tell without knowing.
qckSpectre 09-27-2007, 09:17 PM I have 15 all around and 20 on the windshield.. Mob tint. Ill take pics tomorrow after washing and post them up for you.. the color of your interior makes a huge difference too..
rocketwagon 09-27-2007, 09:25 PM 35% up front per MA state law, 20% the rest of the way. I think the "fade effect" you notice is worse on lighter-colored cars.
Mad Dog 20/20 09-27-2007, 11:10 PM I just recently got 50% Huper Optik ceramic all around. I love it. Very subtle looking, but rejects A LOT of heat.
I too do not care for the different shades of tint on side gass. Darker tint on the rear window is a viable option, though.
fragzem 09-27-2007, 11:18 PM also if u get pulled over, just roll down your front windows before the cop walks upto the car
until the cop says "Put your window up 4 inches please"
chiefwej 09-28-2007, 12:03 AM I used 35% all windows. Like you, I think the "two-tone" effect of different tint levels looks tacky. And the dark limo tints are just too ghetto looking for my taste....It's a BMW not a mafia staff car. 35 works great, even her in Tucson w/ 300+ days of very bright sunshine. I used the 3M CS film, it's carbon based and will never discolor. I think it looks classy and it's legal.

yah that would suck...hasnt happened to me yet...yet....
hey chief i was born in tucson... u like it out there?i visited, but it seemed kinda boring
pyccak 09-28-2007, 01:46 AM i got 15 all the way around although the limit is 70 all the way around in PA!so far no problems
jamesdc4 09-28-2007, 02:22 AM 50% all the way around. I like it. Easier to see at night.

I had 35% on my 73 Olds Cutlass Supreme. Loved it , but at night it was dangerous.:cool

Almost all new SUV's and minivans have 20 or even 15% from the factory on all back windows, they wouldn't do that if it was dangarous
00BMW540i6 09-28-2007, 10:58 AM I have 35% ceramic in my Camaro and I love it.
Also had 20% all around in my Black/Black Maxima and it definitely looked darker than it was.
Thanks to xxpanipuri and chiefwej for pics of your 35% tints. I was considering 20% but after seeing those pics, I'm sure 20% will be too dark; I don't want to look like a gangster!
35% it is.
ncsucarjock88 09-28-2007, 10:14 PM I"ve got 28% all around, and with the sand interior, really wish that i'd gone to 20%. I'll probably get it redone next year to 20%. It's just too light. With a dark interior, it would have been perfect. Interior makes a huge difference. And i have a wagon, with a lot more glass...which also adds to it. Whatever you do, be consistent. I wouldn't bother with tint unless it were 35% or more. (more being a lower number) With 35%, people will ask if your windows are tinted (ie: cant' tell them from normal).
