Anyone out there have a 1998 528 with the Nikasil coat cylinder walls? Have you had any troubles with it yet?

I'm only asking because there seems to be a wide spread problem with any Al. engine blocks that have Nikasil coated cylinder walls. I guess in the UK there has been hundreds of M52's engine blocks replaced due to the high sulfur levels in their fuel wearing out the coating.

I just wanted to determine how much of a 'real' problem this is. I talked to my mech. about it and he's yet to see a 528 come in with engine damage due to the Nikasil coating breaking down.... I believe the Nikasil blocks are fine as long as the owner have always used good quality fuel, low in sulfur that is.

A leak down test is the only sure way to determine if your engine has combustion inefficencies. A range of 5-8% is typically expected for a new engine, anything over 16% and you've got problems.

Not sure about Canada...but NO...yes I typed it correctly...NO E39 528i/iT/540i/iT models were imported to the USA with Nikasil engines. They all had the Alusil engines.

Nikasil in the USA was relegated to the M60 V8 engines in the e34/e32/e38/e31.

And for the e38 that only would have been 1st year 1995 Models only...

Yes..absolutely correct...and that's because the 1996 E38 V8 models imported here all had the M62 Alusil V8 engine. :D

The Nikasil issue here (in the USA) was only with the M60 B30 enigne (e34 530i/it) and M60 B40 engine (e34 540i; e32 740i/iL; 1995 e38 740i/iL; e31 840i)

Thanks guy for all your input. I just recieved a email from BMW Canada and the Nikasil M52 equipment cars were never shipped to Canada. Really dodged a bullet there.....

Thanks for reporting back your find. I'll have to update my mental rolodex to include Canada...or just remember to say North America. :)
