View Full Version : m20 swap / tranny question
joshw02 09-27-2007, 12:00 AM Hey guys- I'm looking at a 80' 320i that has a freshly rebuilt m20 in it. The question is the guy used a 5-speed out of a 528e.. Is this a common transmission to use on this kind of swap? The car also has a 3.90 LSD and some other goodies. I could most likely get it for $3500 I think.. Opinions?

320 bimmer 09-27-2007, 01:04 AM yeah, well, depends on the condition of the body. any rust?
Madhatter 09-27-2007, 03:34 AM yeah, nothing wrong with the gearbox, the only issue might be if the speedo works.
joshw02 09-27-2007, 09:24 AM Yes the speedo works. The car would need paint down the road.. There is a little rust by the windshield and back window but very little. The car has euro bumpers, recovered Recaro interior, Bilstein sports,h&r springs, koni swaybars,BMP front and rear braces, two sets wheels/tires. The motor only has 3k on the rebuild with a mild cam, real cold air intake, headers, big open exhaust, 323i lightweight flywheel, etc. Sounds like fun eh?
blitzed310 09-27-2007, 10:35 AM Sounds like my 323i minus the headers and CIA. FYI I got my 323i with an M20B25 for cheaper than that.
joshw02 09-27-2007, 02:35 PM Blitzed- Wanna take a look at it for me? It's in Socal.. Baldwin Hills area? 90008 L.A.

Arriving in Munich to pick up my buddy's 335i, driving to the Ring, then to Amsterdam, then to Paris, then to Barcelona, then to Madrid. Each country will be 3 nights stay, with a total of about 30 hours of driving.
Allot of things to do in just 2 weeks!

Good fun. CJ if you can test drive the new m5 or the new m3. I heard the m5 is 300 hp, and if you push a button then it becomes 400 HP.
The countries are so close together, its very cool to visit them.
Are you going to Italy like I did?
Anyway have fun, bro.
PS: I did not see any e21s in Southern Italy. A few ferraris and lambos
but not too much else.

I think the M5 is 400 then goes to 500hp... someone help on this please. The M3 has a little over 400 horsies and it also has an ///M button but it only changes suspension, throttle, ect. Personally, I wouldn't pay a dime to drive either car... too big, I want a 135i.
Madhatter 09-27-2007, 10:09 PM 507bhp with a push of the little M button on the M5 :)

Can't believe this :lol
In a couple of weeks I will be in Neumunster, Germany. Near Hamburg. I too am planning a trip to the 'Ring. Talk about coincidence, hehehehe!!!
E21Craze 09-28-2007, 06:56 PM Oh, yes, and the M5 (V10) has 507 bhp and the new M3 (V8) about 400 bhp.
