View Full Version : gurney flaps/wickerbills for LTW wing
odortiz 09-26-2007, 07:13 PM since these are practically impossible to find:

what do you guys think about using the one from the 996 gt3 wing like this one:
http://i97.photobucket.com/albums/l216/odortiz/gurney%20flaps/800px-Porsche_GT_3_Spoiler.jpg
the 997 gt3 flap is a few inches shorter than the 996 flap. the 996 has a 38" wide flap. this wouldn't look to bad on the lower element of a LTW style wing.
anybody have access to part numbers and prices?
Steve J. 09-26-2007, 07:21 PM IMO those LTW flaps are too big. I would not go over 1/2", otherwise you are at the point of diminishing returns. You'll have extra drag without any gain in downforce.
I think you can probably find online a 1/2" "L" and form it to the wing. Should be cheap, and with some good adhesive, it'll be easy.
I think mcmaster has PVC and Fiberglass 90* extrusions/forms available.
FierySphere 09-26-2007, 07:33 PM In another thread somewhere, someone used the E46 M3 lip as a extension on the lower lip of the LWT wing. Seemed like a decent option.
frayed 09-26-2007, 07:41 PM Hmmm, obviously none of us have windtunnels to test these flaps, but have folks noticed a difference?
Both my GT3s had the flap, and only on the bottom wing.
Steve J. 09-26-2007, 07:50 PM This won't be something you feel. Its a small part of a big system. Every small part plays its role.
Think big picture! :)
jmitro 09-26-2007, 07:55 PM discussed to some extent here:

odortiz 09-26-2007, 08:13 PM my "problem" is i made my front splitter too big. now i have what i feel is a bit too much front downforce at speed. i was thinking of adding the gt3 bill to the lower element and something like the vortex generators on the back of the mitsubishi evo's. i heard form some p-car guys the bill alone is worth 30 lbs (they didn't know what speed) and the evos vortex generators were worth 15 lbs of downforce.
i would rather add some rear than take away from the front.
Steve J. 09-26-2007, 08:23 PM Can you describe this "feeling of too much front downforce at speed"?
Anything from their cars is not really comprable to your car, so forget what they said :)
Get a Mashaw adjustable wing if you want to keep that style, otherwise get a normal race wing and you'll get a lot more downforce and less drag.
There are a couple different VG's available, google is your friend :) I just got some in the mail I'm going to try.
frayed 09-26-2007, 08:29 PM Wickerbills. Vortex Generators. I think you guys are conspiring to fock with me. Or maybe I've had too many reposados.
jmitro 09-26-2007, 09:42 PM wickerbill is a gurney flap, made popular by Dan Gurney. effective at improving downforce without increasing drag significantly. generally should be no greater than a certain height and angle to be effective
that's about the extent of my aerodynamic knowledge.
Vitolo 09-26-2007, 09:49 PM Dave,
Consider the E46 M3 lip spoiler. It is pretty much a perfect fit for the lower base of the LTW wing and can be readily had for cheap. Might give you what you're looking for from the BMW parts pin.
There are also aftermarket cf versions on ebay if you did not want to paint it to match.
I've got a set of the OE gurneys and they're not the nicest pieces. Very expensive and kind of cheesy, theyre just made of rubber.
JClark 09-27-2007, 12:52 AM No way its a noticeable difference. They just look badass. Anyone have part numbers for the OEM ones?

Do you guys have a part number for the E46 M3 one? I saw the diagram on RealOem.com/bmw but no part number listed (no ETK here at work either).
If anyone has it, much appreciated.
Carlos.

EBAY special it.
odortiz 09-27-2007, 07:06 PM Can you describe this "feeling of too much front downforce at speed"?
this was the first time i had it on. on the climbing esses, i used to have understeer. braking from the two long straights, the car would wander all over the place.
now i am neutral or with a hint of oversteer in the climbing esses and south bend. but the car feels so good under braking, i was braking later. for the first time i ran out of 5th gear on the back straight at 7000 rpm.
calm down, i have a 6-speed with a 3.73 final drive.
just a hint more dounforce is what i want for the rear. i'm not too keen on the ptg wing. too tall. i actually have the rd sport class 2 wing which is a little lower than the LTW on high.
Here is the e46 m3 trunk lip spoiler on the ltw wing
odortiz 09-27-2007, 09:04 PM that looks pretty good. is it the actual e46 part or a knock-off?
odortiz 10-05-2007, 05:18 PM scratch the porsche part. wholesale through the dealer i work in cost in the mid 200's and up.

+1 to all of the above. The ones on the pics here are way too big to be effective.

True, but for the price being paid here, there are much better places to spend money. The effect of the gurneys times ten could be surpassed by spending $200.

actual e46 part.
dbbmwm3 10-05-2007, 07:36 PM Where would one find a rubber wickerbill to cut to size?
M3Alpine99 10-05-2007, 10:50 PM that looks pretty good. is it the actual e46 part or a knock-off?
That one is OEM
But they make replicas for an e46 coupe and M3 which should be the exact same piece...

fyi an OEM wicker bill sold on here recently for around $250
interested for some other cheaper options as well for my ltw high rise

This is the number I highjacked off someones car at WGI
51-71-2-265-764-3. However, it produced a blank at my usual parts supplier...
m332is 10-06-2007, 10:34 AM I assume you grabbed the part number off Ike's M3 GTR. The part is NLA from BMW.

But you can get one on Ebay easily for less than $20, so isn't that still a better cost:mod ratio? :)
