we have had quite a bit of new guy this last month and they keep coming! i love to see this. but, its hard to get to know you guys with out any introduction or pics of your car. i have to see picture a car in my head in order to know who you are minus some of you,,,

so as a favor, could you post pics here and give a little bit of history and info of yourself and your car?

and or do it in the registy, but i figured this would be a little better for this time being.
if you cant post pics, go ahead and email them to me: rickysgarage@msn.com

and ill post them up. also, if you dont have a photo hosting site, you might want to get one at a place like photobucket.com , it will help us and you if we can see what your talking about. we love pics!

thanks again!:buttrock

I can finally post pics so I thought I would properly introduce myself.

My car's vital stats:
'77 320i Topazbraun metallic. Date of manufacture 10/76
83,000 original miles.

I fully restored the car during the fall/winter/spring of 2003/2004. I did all the work myself with the exception of stripping and applying the paint. I am the second owner of this car. It was purchased new by my Uncle and he drove it only on nice sunny days until he parked it in 1991. The car sat for over 10 years untouched until my wife had it towed from his place and dropped in my garage.

Modifications:
- Marshal halogen headlights from 1978
- Front spoiler (manufacturer unknown, installed in 1978)
- Rear speaker shelf (1978)
- 5 speed conversion with 3.91 LSD
- HR springs with Bilstein sports
- E21parts suspension bushings all the way around
- E21parts rear strut brace with battery relocation
- E21parts engine dampener
- E21parts short shift kit
- Bavauto ceramic coated header
- 9.5:1 CR JE pistons with TotalSeal rings
- Metric Mechanic sport head (cam, porting, valves)
- E30 Alternator
- Electric cooling fan, removed engine driven fan
- 45mm TWM ITBs
- Custom progressive throttle linkage
- Custom cold air intake box
- MSII EFI with MS2-extra code (24lb injectors)
- MSII-extra directly driven wasted spark ignition with 32-1 crank trigger
- E30 in-tank fuel pump from a 1991 318i

I have a full set of pictures showing the car over the past several years in my Webshots album available via the link in my sig.

Prior to doing the EFI conversion I ran stock kjet for 2 years and then converted to 40mm DCOEs and ran those for a little over a year.

Here are a few pics showing the current condition of the car:

hey! i live in north california, and love the e21!! i got my car about a month ago... and have already got a speeding ticket it in it, i really enjoy working on cars, and am a hard core autocrosser aiming for a higher racing currier. im a recent joiner of this forum, and already have been helped a lot! i love the e21, best small car ive had. ok, well, i bought it from a guy in the bay area, its a 320is red, ok interior, need a new drivers seat, 1.8L injected engine, 5spd trans, and 15inch bbs rims, no rust and paint is in incredable condition, stock suspension but not for long. also going to do a 02 engine swap and turbo. here are a few pics, the first is just after i baught it, and the last is of it now with out the front bumper, im going to cover the holes with... something and paint them the same color, also getting a euro rear bumper and sheet metal (i hope).

Steve your car is well put together and nicely done. Your E21 is one to admire!

Can you shed some light on what that aluminum looking plate is there on the bottom left below the fuse box where the FD would be.

Can you shed some light on what that aluminum looking plate is there on the bottom left below the fuse box where the FD would be.

That aluminum plate is my progressive throttle linkage. One of the big problems with large ITBs is the throttle sensitivity. I developed a linkage that gives me about a 10:1 pedal to throttle ratio at closed throttle and about 1:1 at WOT. This really tamed the touchy response of the gas pedal with the ITBs. Before I did this I would drive around town using only about 1/8 inch of pedal travel. It was really touchy and a pain to drive in stop and go traffic.

http://inlinethumb08.webshots.com/3591/2550977420059599320S600x600Q85.jpg

The linkage is a simple cam follower setup. The pedal is connected to the rotating arm from the left. The ITB throttle lever is connected to the horizontal arm from the bottom right.

The arm is lifted by the cam follower roller on the bottom of the rotating arm.

At closed throttle, most of the motion of the cam follower is in the horizontal direction and therefore is takes a lot of rotation of the pedal arm to cause a small amount of lift on the throttle lever.

http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/2633/2167513580059599320S600x600Q85.jpg

Closer to WOT, most of the cam follower motion is in the vertical so it lifts the throttle lever at an increasing rate.

http://inlinethumb09.webshots.com/3464/2037437110059599320S600x600Q85.jpg

I admit it looks a little unconventional but it works really well. All pivot points have sealed ball bearings pressed into the parts. There is no sign of play in the linkage after about 6 months of driving.

I'm going to tweak this design a little more this winter and cut in a concave curve into the bottom of the horizontal lever to make the linkage even more progressive closer to closed throttle. It's still just a touch sensitive off the line but nothing compared to what it used to be.

Ok so now I can post pics...

My first and only car, I bought it for $1400 the summer of 2004.
I had no idea what I was getting into. it ran good, everything worked except the odometer and the AC, was a 5-speed, and was older, easy to work on... that's the only reason I got it. A year later, I found bmw320i.com... and everything went downhill from there, haha
I am currently in my 4th year at the california maritime academy in Vallejo. majoring in Marine engineering. although it deals with steam, gas turbines, and diesel, I have learned a lot that ive applied to this car.

I call her shiza because it seems to be the most common word to come out of my mouth when I'm driving, whether it be because something just broke, or I still can't believe how well it handles 45 MPH turns at 80!

I got hit by a 3-point buck last winter, slammed its body into my door, destroyed my mirror and its head exploded on the windshield right in my face....I will never replace a windshield myself again!!!!!

lost my clutch on a downshift from 5th to 4th 2 years ago on hwy 12... the most expensive breakdown ive had so far...onlybecause it cost $425 to tow it home to jackson! that was a cruicial point in the life of my car... I was getting ready to junk it instead of paying for a tow.

I backed into the corner of my brother's tailgate, hit a boulder in the ditch at 25 when my great dane decided to jump in my lap, destroyed a CV joint at a stop sign, replaced the oil pump this summer, the roof and hood, and trunk were really oxidized, but I scraped of the flaking clear coat and used a polish to clean it up... those spots actually look better than the normal paint.

Got a rear sway bar, LSD, bilstien sports on the rear, engine powered fan removed, new tie rods, one recaro seat, (still looking for a passenger side) sport steering wheel, AC system completely removed, custom center console, (or rather, no console at all) it looks good, really clean. removed the front bumper after it got bent from the boulder incident, added a front air dam. currently, its painted primer gray on the front. and redline in the tranny and diff. and rear spoiler from a 325is, chrome door handles. complete tool set plus extras! I like to comb the junkyards.

I fixed the odometer in 06', the mileage when I got it said 156k now it says 185k.. probably got at least 220k considering how long it mustve been broken before got it... but I still get 28-30 MPG! it runs awesome, no hard-start probems, burns a little oil, but mostly during cold mornings. Ive taken it up to 4800 RPM in 5th gear on hwy 80 in Utah salt flats... it just takes forever to get there. so its still got plenty of power..(in comparison to other stock 320i)

oh yeah, and Ive driven it to seattle and back twice, then a road trip with a brother and my girlfriend to Chicago last spring along route 66 was pretty sweet, except for a tiny fuel leak that drove me crazy.

new pics to come this weekend.

Just kidding. That's really awesome.

What spring/Shock setup are you using that makes it handle so well? Mine damn near runs itself off the road trying to take a 90 Deg turn at 25...

Yeah, I'm a poor college student... currently taking dynamics, actually...
I have stock springs, bilstiens on the rear only...:( but with stock rear sway bar and LSD, it helps a LOT. BTW, 80 on a 45 turn is pushing it as far as I can without sliding around.

on 90 degree turns, well i think you need a go-cart to go faster than 25. or really sticky tires...

Hi everyone, I just bought 2 E21s over the last 2 weeks... I got the second one for parts but I'll probably end up keeping that one and selling the first one..
I'll post some pics here as soon as I have some time to take them (say, this weekend if it doesn't rain)...

I'm a software engineer living in Seattle... my main car is a E36 M3, which I've modified a lot, all by myself. The only thing that I had a shop do was the head gasket replacement because I don't have a garage (or that much time).

I'm really excited about my little E21... i'm considering an M20B25 swap in the long run, but I definitely don't have time for that now.

I'm very pleasantly surprised by the amount of activity in the E21 section here, and the amount of knowledgeable people. I've always been amazed by bf.c, but didn't think the E21 section would be that active (for example, the E23/E32 section isn't...)

Hi im chris,

Sorry I dont have any pictures at the moment(lost the charger to my camera battery)

I have a 1983 320i with about 190,000 miles(it says 180,000 but the odometer had died for about 10k b4 it got fixed)

My mom bought it brand new in september 1982 and I have inherited it. Almost anything that can be broken has been. Slowly im fixing it back to good then going to really modify it for track/street.

My only mod so far is OEM recaro seats which are wonderful. I intend on doing a suspension next and slowly replacing the interior.

Once I get some pictures going i will sure to post them up, in the mean time I hope to meet many of the people in socal so I can learn more about this wonderful car

Hey guys, My name is Amir and my love affair with the e21 started when I was a kid like many of you here. My dad had a white 81 320i that turned into mine. I've loved BMW since i can remember and have only really owned and driven old school bmw's. I loved the car but had a cousin that badly needed a car so I made the sacrifice and gave him mine.

I just posted a thread with the new car I picked up on Tuesday. I have a shopping list of mods I'll be doing to it to make me worthy of the legion for bimmerfest lol, Very clean car with a great interior and strong running engine. Although I'm new in the sense that I've only recently started posting, I've spent 3/4 of my bf.c time on this section since I joined. So although I'm new I'm pretty familiar with many of the inspirational cars on the forum. I'll post more pics of the car when I get new ones since the old ones are in a thread below.

My car is to damn ugly to let anyone see it! I've had it for 8 years now, a freind just gave it to me after his brother gave it to him after neither could get it running. Driven daily for years on the original engine, I have now swapped in a 2002tii engine. It also has:
crusty faded lapisblau paint
one ugly yellow seat from a 2002
ST springs
ST swaybars (25mm front 19mm rear)
bilstein touring shocks
EDIS ignition system
Limited slip differential
Had BBS 15's for years but I traded them

Things in the works are:
16x7 wheels with 5 lugs
280mm brakes with wilwood calipers on all 4 wheels
bilstein sport shocks and eibach springs
electric fan
etc
etc

I'm pretty proud of these red tailights, and you can make your own for $3

Kinda already did this, but missed some of the other new guys, so why not?

Live in a suburb of Birmingham, AL. Just bought a house last week and moving in this Saturday (garage = win).

1978 BMW 320. Little rust below the rear taillights. Other than that, looks clean. Bought from original owner in July via eBay. Has some issues (brake lights not working being my first concern!!), but I hope to get it running in top shape and be able to enjoy it and show it.

What brand are those fog lights? If you want to keep them they are supposed to go below the bumper, I have a set of the guards that go around them if you decide to mount them below.

That blue transmission is sweet! Will the gas tanks be red and the driveshaft yellow? hehe

I posted in the registry too, but I'm a new 320i owner. My 79 is a base model that never had A/C, and no factory options except metalic paint. It's been repainted about 10 years ago and now sadly isn't a BMW color. :( Only thing that has been added is the sport steering wheel. Everything else is stock.

However, it is about as rust free as you can imagine for the Midwest. I have a few rust bubbles under the paint at the bottom of the rear window, but the underneath was coated and is in great shape.

I currently have the head off at the machine shop for a valve job since I had to replace a weaping head gasket. Also replacing the timing chain, tensioner and various other top end gaskets while I have it open. I don't have too many pictures hosted online yet, but here's a few of both the car and the head rebuild. After it's back together, I plan to take some good pictures of it. Right now, all I really have are some of the pictures from when I bought it.

It has a great many issues but it's coming along pretty well. 81 base model 5spd, safaribeige(unfortunately). The odometer stopped a while ago at 219k, but the po claims ~650k(yeah right)

what's wrong with the wheels?

Oh, they just dont fit my taste... sorta look like those mexicali rims cuz they stick out the fender with the tires kinda stretched over them.
(and yeah, I know i really shouldn't be saying anything cuz I'm still running stock steels) :(

Are the wheels on the yellow 320 Sportmax 002? I've been looking at these wheels for my E21 since BBS owners are too proud of their wheels and demand too money for them. The Sportmax have 0 offset, but they seem to fit fine - these are 8" wide. They are cheap and not too heavy at all! I was thinking of running 15x8 rear and 15x7 front (205 and 225 tires).

yeah those are 002's, another decent set is the 501's and they come in et15 at a really good price.

I've been debating putting them on too but I think I found something else that I really like and will be going with.

I finally got some pics of my E21, so enjoy:
It's a '83 320is, riding on H&R Sport springs and Blistein Sport shocks. A lot of suspension bushings have been replaced recently by the previous owner.
It has a dent on the rear passenger's side, but there's no structural damage.
My other E21 is red, but that's not important because I'll be selling that one soon.

Well, I just typed up a great into, complete with pics.......and I can't post it! Oh well. I own a 1982 320i, it's silver with blue int. 5 speed, a/c, sunroof and 13 inch turbine wheels. My father-in-law bought it new, and put all of the 186,000 miles on it. Last year he gave it to us, and I'll be driving it most of the time. I LOVE this car! It's just FUN to drive! I have plans to make an IS clone out of it. Not for re-sale, because we will never sell it. I've been lucky enough to find most of the IS parts in the Pull-a-part yards near me. I have a 3.90 LSD, front and rear sway bars, recaro seats, a damaged front spoiler, a big tool kit with all tools(ebay), and just purchased 5 BBS RA's (14x6) from Stan S.(thanks Stan). Hopefully soon I can get it repainted, but that may be a while. I hate that BMW320i.com is now gone, I was a member there. I'm very glad I found this place, as I am not used to BMW's. I have worked on Honda's and Toyota's before. David

I just joined today. Can't post images yet so a verbal description will have to do. I've had a 320i since 1994, it was a '81 model, Henna Red, tan interior. The previous owner had installed a MOMO steering wheel, Hartge 15" 11 spoke alloy wheels and a Hartge front air dam. This was my first BMW and I really like the way it handled even with the 45 mph shimmy. With the 15 in wheels and 205/50 tires it was glued to the road. I had a lot of work done to it but it always neede more and finally more than I could handle it just started to deteriorate, then the engine let go. I was faced with repairing the engine and still having an ugly rusty faded car or I could find something else. As luck would have it, The mechanic had an '82 320i that needed a home so I got for a lot less than an engine rebuild. It has a black interior that is like new, new red paint. Of course it has some issues but it's a lot easier to deal with the small problems with a nice looking car. I saved the Hartge rims/tires from the old 320i and the front air dam, found a set of Recaros on ebay in great shape so eventually it will resemble my original car.

one of mine was $400, the other was $500, both running, the $500 one passed smog, the other one didn't need smog cuz it's a 1980 (cars older than 25 years don't get tested here), but it definitely would've passed because the engine is rebuilt and runs very smoothly.

air conditioner works
steelies
owners manuals and original stuff in the pouches

i had to clean the fuel pumps though. i first found ti down the road form my parents a year ago nad we asked the guy's wife if they had considered selling. she said no as her husband loved the car and had just driven it from cali to corpus. we left a car club card with our phone number on the back and would longingly look down the road each time we went to mom and dad's house. saturday, dad and i were talking about restoring his euro 635csi and on the way home i figured "what the heck" and stopped by the 320 again. the guy came out and said he was thinking of selling it as he doesn't drive it anymore since he fishes alot now. i told him how we had left a card a year ago and he said he has it on his keyboard and was going to call that evening to see if i wanted it. i said heck yes, i'll take it, how much you want? he says 250 bucks and i'll see if it'll start for you and you pick it up in the morning. i agree and when i come back in the morning he says the car starts on fluid but doesn't get fuel through the injectors. no trouble, i say and me and a buddy tow it to my house with my 325i. i pull the pumps, clean them thoroughly with carb cleaner and they fire right up. from then on, its been a blast driving the car around and has caused me to put my 83 and 84 e30s up for sale just ot clear up the driveway.

the only tiny spot of tarnish on my silver lining is that the car has a bit of a cold start issue. i read through the faq article at hte top of the page and it let me download a diy on cleaning a warm up regulator. i thought this was the answer to my problems till i realized i can't find a wamr up regulator and my cold start injector is electronic so i pulled it and cleaned the crapper out of it and am about to go see how it starts now.

i. also, have both the e21 and e30. i like the e30 for auto cross but i have so much time in the car and mods t hat i can't sell it with out feeling like i've lost tons of money. the e21 is so damn fun to drive though that i drive it anytime over the e30. if you are on e30tech.com then you will know my car, i'm superj on the tech. i have tons of pics over there. i'm selling off all my other e30s though as this 320i has won me over. i'll soon just have the 89 and the 82
