i live within a half hour of there and never go unless there is something very specific i need to go to. i hate it.
TCarlisle 09-24-2007, 09:48 AM Well, first thing is this..... since you are posting in an enthusiast forum, I assume you value your car more than the average Joe, so the first thing is don't take your car. If you do, don't park it in a garage. You would think that paying $30 to park your car for three or four hours would mean they would take good care of it, but they don't. You will get a door ding, scratch, or even a full dent about once in every 8 times you use a parking garage. Park on the street, it is actually much safer.
As far as what to do, well, it depends on what floats your boat. If you like shows, see a show, but do your homework because there are mediocre shows on Broadway. You have music, art, dance, pretty much everything cultural can be found here.
Food -- be careful and do your homework, you can stand on any street in NYC and look around and everywhere in sight there are restaurants. They all look good, but the truth is there are only a handful that are worth the time and money. Zagat is your friend. If you just pick a place spontaneously the chances are almost 90% that you are about to experience mediocrity at NY prices.
You have your typical tourist things like times square, empire state building, etc. If really want to experience the city, then do a little homework and learn about all the neighborhoods and how the cultures vary, and pick the ones that intrigue you and just go experience it.
If you go to the typical tourist areas, you will be surrounded by, well, tourists and you really aren't experiencing NYC -- you might as well save the airfare and go to a theme park near you. Once you get away from the tourist crap, you will be amazed at how nice the city is.
But if you really want to do the tourist thing, then do it right! Make sure you carry a backpack or one of those belts with a pouch, with an I Heart NYC T-shirt, and walk around midtown looking up at the tall buildings instead of watching where you are going. Oh, and also make sure that your entire family walks abreast so that New Yorkers that have a sense of urgency and actually know where they are going can't possibly get past you.:evil2
Welcome to New York!

Hahaha - pet peeve of mine as well. If there's a bottle-neck on the sidewalk, it's usually an out-of-towner at the front of it. No, no, no need to move aside and let all those people behind you making those funny faces go by. :D

i never suggested for him to visit nj. and you sound like you are the one hating! by the way the reasons i don't go to NY are various and although i don't have to defend my opinion i will list some of the ones the come right to mind for you:
the 2 hour wait to go into the city (or hour train ride to go 20 miles)
the traffic is terrible

there are plenty of fine dining establishments all over the continent no need to go there.
about the only things the city is good for is museums, and tourist sites. but since i couldn't care less about time square, and the christmas tree and i have taken all my grade school field trips i don't enjoy NYC at all.
oh and if you think nj is only land fills you really don't appreciate anything nor know anything about our vast state.
amancuso 09-24-2007, 01:44 PM I like going into NYC (Read Manhattan) To experience the restaurants and broadway plays. I always find that getting there is the part I hate most, but once I'm there I have a good time. Also +1 on the NJ thing, I don't know why people always think it's a garbage dump, Fresh Kills, SI, NYC, NY anyone!?

Thanks for all your help, I guess I have to get lost and walk in and out from the shitty places. :(
I am down for whatever, music/clubs/restaurants/shopping/etc. is what I would be planning on doing there, don't think there is nothing much to do besides that. So let me know of the good stuff around there.

AndrewH 09-24-2007, 08:12 PM oh and I think the "Zagat" rating is a little "overrated." Every freakin restaurant has one in the window :rofl, and I think sometimes the dumpiest looking places offer the best food/services.
sbblowz 09-24-2007, 08:38 PM 53rd and 6th has a real good chicken or gyro with rice stand. only open at night and is open real late like until 4.
Fist of Karma 09-25-2007, 01:19 AM come to Houston... less insanity and hotter women.
dello 09-25-2007, 11:36 AM New York is New York. It offers alot than some other cities. As far as food, new york is probably the one of the few places where you can get food from all cultures, not just mainstream cultures. As far as traffic, it's a hit or miss-It's funny to hear everyone from Jersey complain about traffic into the city. I live in Connecticut and work in New Jersey-and Jersey traffic is by far worst than new york. It takes you an 1 1/2 just to get out of new jersey to cross the water by tunnel or bridge.

Let me guess....you had some sort of bad experience in NYC??
I've been to a few cities though (east coast, west coast, south coast :stickoutt, few in canada, couple in europe - most notably Paris which is a great place to see) Not that many compared to other people really, but still im no hermit.
Where have you been that is so great compared to NYC?

no bad experience in NYC. i go when i am invited to do specific things and hate it every time. and i have been to all the major european cities, most of the major US ones (haven't had the chance to go cali yet), and been to Buenos Aires, AR. my fav so far is Frankfurt, Germany and second place is Rome. and my two favorite in the US are boston and miami. philly and pittsburg are tied for last place on my list. and NYC is somewhere in the middle.
mookish 09-25-2007, 06:10 PM NYC is a visitors town these days, you don't wanna live here unless you have deep pockets. This the perfect city to visit and then get the f**k outta dodge. I've visited a lot of other places and after about two days, you've seen and done everything. NYC has the best nightlife, a vast varitey of food in a relatively small area, plenty of sights and more. Just do your tourist thing and say goodbye until nextime. Those of us who live here know about the outskirts that you'll never see, the outskirts that shallow pockets take you to. So when we speak, thats what we see.
TehPandaShow 09-26-2007, 01:01 AM I am going to queens then. :devillook

sirtiger 09-26-2007, 11:17 AM If NY is expensive, try major cities in western europe or japan... I had some sticker shock there
Come to NY & take the subway. Its a fine way to get a good ole nyc mugging. I lolz when out of towners assume that subways are for being mugged.
ttgxc 09-26-2007, 11:25 AM Go check out some museums like the Met and the Museum of Natural History...you can spend a whole day there. The best thing to do is take a train into the city. Find a suburb in NY/NJ/CT area and take a commuter train to Grand Central Station (fun to check out) and is right in the middle of Manhattan. From there you are only a few blocks from Times Square and close to 5th Ave, which has the big stores (no more FAO Swartz). If you like walking you can make it to Central Park and see the Plaza Hotel! Plus you get anywhere using the subway. There is a lot to do and see, so don't try to see everything in one day.
///M3 CRAZY 09-26-2007, 12:36 PM and who sold you that line a bull about NJ being the wealthiest state in the US?
sorry this year we dropped down to #2 in the country. and NY isn't even on the top 10 list

sbblowz 09-26-2007, 10:40 PM i do have to say that NYC is ridiculously crowded but the nightlife is intense. now my favorite city is san francisco because the weather there is so great.. i might be only saying that since i go to nyc so much.
CleanE34 09-26-2007, 11:05 PM chinatown is where its at. lots of bootleg crap is lying around so be careful, the food is good tho.
m3TROY 09-26-2007, 11:21 PM haha, you are a dumbass. Up until that recent survey, NJ was the wealthiest state.
"It aint NJ that's for shit sure?" :lol
their basing it on the TOTAL POPULATION dumbass.
new york has almost 2 1/2 times the population of NJ and is about 10 times larger.
if they based it just on the 5 buros then NYC would not only be the richest in the country but 99% of the world.
like i said it aint NJ thats for shit sure, you can try 2 talk up NJ all you want but NJ is and will always be the red headed wanabe stepchild of new york, want proof?
just look at NJs sport franchises, their still called the NEW YORK JETS and the NEW YORK GAINTS hummmm y do you think that is because no one would care about the NJ JETS/GAINTS and thats a fact.
hell you just lost your basket ball team 2 one of our buros for crying out loud......................................thats just plain sad!
look at the NJ DEVILS they keep winning and guess what NO ONE CARES!! both teams make it to the playoffs and the stadium is 1/2 EMPTY!!
but you know damn well if they were called the NY DELVILS tickets would sell through the roof!!
forget about the nets, once their in new york you'll be lucky to buy a ticket with in the next 3 years at best.
its not fair to NJ to compare it to NY, NJ may be nice (and it is) but its just not in the same league as NYC.
flame away you may not like to here it but the facts are the facts plain and simple.

I've done my fair share of traveling, and in my very humble opinion......I'd say that Tokyo, Japan is the "greatest" city in the world........truly the city that never sleeps........
Frankfurt, Germany is my favorite city on the planet.......and there's a few more that I'd put above NYC.

Empire7 10-07-2007, 11:43 PM Well I live right here in midtown Manhattan and love it. Literally 10 blocks from Times Sq. Great location, if I need anything its right here. Got a grocery store on the 1st floor of my building, restaurants on my block, places to chill, etc. No getting into the car and hunting in the middle of the night if I need something simple like a soda. The ladies are dressed to kill at the surrounding spots every night (especially Fri/Sat). When I feel like it I jump in my 7 and visit any of the surrounding areas such as NJ, LI, CT, etc.
Only downside is expense and if you aren't willing to commit to that then yeah it sucks. Car-wise my suspension needs to be more durable than say living in some small town in Kentucky and also you need to pay for a garage. I don't mind it at all though so its all advantage to me.
MIMI1 10-08-2007, 01:29 AM NYC is nice and all when you dont live here.
We have to deal with all this BS ass traffic all these idiot cabbies that changed from a donkey to a car by force..... all these old people that come out during the weekends and think they own the road at a whopping 23.7 MPH
FUCK THIS PLACE
The roads suck, the girls are ugly(aside from tourists), shits expensive, and every idiot thats heard of coming to america to start a new life ends up here in NYC
Truly please visit California or something
I <3 NY
MIMI1 10-08-2007, 01:31 AM Well I live right here in midtown Manhattan and love it.

Which company do you park your car with?
I worked before for a parking lot, you have no idea what you are saying, we used to take out anything that was decent and take it drifting to a back lot behind our garage:devillook
Hence I will never park my car in one:nono

It is a 40 car garage and obviously there's no large/open joyride around here to take it. I get what you're saying though, because when I was in FL for a year they had valet and I never used it due to the fact that they would take the cars locally and mess around with them. They were all dudes in their 20s and had couldn't even hide their anticipation. Here it is a few middle aged guys and they only work one per shift. I'm sure if there was an issue with them running off with the cars while leaving the garage unmanned I'd have heard of it by now since we all live in the bldg and word spreads fast.

I 50% agree with your statements. In a lot of the lower income areas you will see girls with pot-bellies and immigrants fresh off the boat/fence. I am not sure if you are describing your area or just generalizing NYC but in my neighborhood you have a lot of professionals of all different backgrounds. Some of them are immigrants, however, if you are educated and doing well for yourself I don't care where you're from.
As far as traffic and expense goes, that's a given with any major metropolitan area. When I lived on Miami Beach it was the same deal, I was paying quadruple the rent of anyone who lived on the mainland. Just the price you gotta pay. But then again when I told/tell people I lived on Miami Beach or Manhattan I never was or are currently asked "What's that nearby?" or "How far is that from ------"

Its a rough estimation of the girls here, dont get me wrong many are smoking out on long island and there abouts. In order to find the super hot girls here in the city you must go to the really nice clubs and search there it is not a day to day occurrence to see really pretty girls. BTW I date a girl that lives in the 5 boroughs right now so your credibility has gone down. Obviously south hampton is a bit nicer of places than that of NYC but have you been to all parts of say manhattan or just the nice ones. Where do you tend to see the better looking girls? And how many really nice places are there in manhattan compared to the not so glamorous places?
My argument is simple, everyone came here to search for a better future for themselves, their kids or their families. On that note however is where the goodness ends. Not everyone here gets by doing the best things such as gangs/mafia illegal business. Do you see many businessmen walking with their beautiful beaus on East 136th st past 10 pm? How bout the same scenario on Spring st?
NYC is just that a very limited area where there are nice places to visit. It is a ll brick and stone. Sure there are places which can be great such as many parks in the city however it is the people that flock to them which bring the parks reputation.
In all people are here to live. Some are smart some not so much but it is clear in NYC the ones that try hard to get out and do good do so... the ones that choose other paths more than likely fail.... with failure come alcoholism, drugs, crime and poverty. In poverty there isn't many beautiful people that can be found is there?
