View Full Version : Any Canadian E36's (or similar) with HID?
crisko 09-21-2007, 04:19 PM I'm thinking of getting some new depo lenses with angel eyes and an HID kit. From what I've heard, the standard HID assemblies come on the "headlights" (outtermost lights) and not the "high beams/daytime running lights" (innermost lights). Apparantly, installing HID on the innermost lights will complicate things in Canadian cars unless the daytime running lights can be disabled. Is this true? Has anyone come across this before?
Also, if there's only HID on the outtermost lights, how does it look? Did anyone upgrade the high beams/daytime running lights to some of the super bright halogen instead?
Any comments from HID people that have a canadian spec car would be appreciated. thanks!
Croak 09-22-2007, 12:35 AM Even factory HID lighting is only on the low beams. Besides the DRL issues, the slow startup times (and high initial power draw) of HID lighting means that "flash to pass" or even turning high beams on and off in normal usage is a problem.
HIDs in the lowbeams make your standard high beams look really really yellow. But you almost never need to have both on at the same time, except for flashing the brights.
With a good set of projectors, good HID bulbs and the lights adjusted properly, you really won't need the high beams for visibility.
97'scort 09-22-2007, 10:31 PM I love my HID's. Got them from habbie in the group buy forums, Prolumen slims. Had a problem with one of the ballasts but we got it all taken care of.
If you're concerned about colouring, just get a colourmatched set of high-beam bulbs from Umnitza. Trust me, you'll only ever use your high beams to signal at somebody. The depo headlight assemblies don't use high-beam bulbs, they use the same ones that the fog lights use.
crisko 09-23-2007, 05:17 PM So if I understand correctly, buying the depo lenses will mean there's no more low/high beam for the innermost light? So the daytime running lights will be low beam and thats it?
97'scort 09-23-2007, 06:18 PM No, the DRL's are the 'high beam' bulb (inner light) with less voltage. Low beam (outside light) is HID. DRL's can also be angel eyes if you wish.

Ok, thats good. So basically there's no real problems with installing the depos with angel eyes and HID into a canadian headlight spec car. The DRL/high beams will stay the same, and the low beam outter light will be HID. As someone else mentioned earlier, the bright white halogens might look alot better for the innermost lights if the outside ones are HID. phewwff.. complicated.
ryosuke 09-24-2007, 04:08 AM yep, installing the depo HIDs would be the same for US spec cars. here's a pic of my car w/ 6000k depo gen IV w/ the 35w KDW HIDs from habbie

97'scort 09-24-2007, 02:42 PM 6000k is the way to go for sure.
crisko 09-24-2007, 07:06 PM What do you guys have for the DRL/High Beams?

hey man richmond meet sometime! haha
97'scort 09-25-2007, 12:56 AM I put colourmatched 6000k predator xenix from Umnitza in my fogs, and put those bulbs in my high beams. Sure they're yellow, but you only use them for DRLs anyways.
