View Full Version : iPod Adaptor Does Charge iPod?
ewrrod 09-20-2007, 08:32 PM Dear BMW Friends,
I recently took delivery of a 2007 X5 4.8i. I immediately had a problems with the ipod integration adaptor/module but after a few weeks got the module replaced. Initially I was under the impression that the iPod Adaptor/Module was supposed to CHARGE the ipod while plugged-in and that once it was replaced with a new module, it would do so. I was incorrect.
I just want to verify with other BMW owners who have the iPod integration Adaptor/Module in their cars, that their iPods are NOT charged while driving.
Please let me know other wise.
Despite my issues with the car, I loved it!
Thanks!

Preppy 09-20-2007, 09:38 PM Eesh, I wish I could tell you. Best bet? Call your dealer and see what they say...
Good luck Rod.
ewrrod 09-21-2007, 07:47 PM Hey Preppy,
Two different dealers have given me two difference answers. Sadly, I'm finding it more reliable to get a consensus from these forums. If you have the latest iPod integration module/adaptor/cable (whatever), please let me know if it charges your iPod.
Thanks.

Strat15 09-24-2007, 10:15 AM I left my ipod plugged into the car all day the other day to see what would happen. At the start of this experiment, the iPod battery was probably about 75% charged. After removal and on subsequent tests, the iPod was fully charged. Hope that helps.
In my brief BMW ownership experience, I've already learned that the Chicago area dealers are all terrible and will each give you a different answer for the simplest of questions (eg. how many quarts of oil does my 07 X5 4.8 hold? -- answer 7qts, 8qts AND 9 qts).
Mad Dragon 09-24-2007, 07:42 PM All N62/N62TU engines hold 8.5 qt (8L). You can fill it with 9qt with no ill effects.
All N52/54 engines hold 6.9qt.

If it plugs into the fat plug at the bottom, it should charge it.

X5ish 10-23-2007, 07:34 PM my recent ipod interface install has other problems, but know anytime an ipod is charging that is evident in the upper right corner (battery lighting bolt symbol) or a larger icon in center of screen. by the way my ipod will charge as needed when connected to the enterface.....

After testing my iPhone and iPods with numerous Apple and after-market chargers, docks, cables & adapters I have come to the self-determined conclusion that Apple has changed the pin configuration in the latest line of Apple iPod products. Can anyone verify that the PIN configuration in the iPhone connector and the new “iPod Classic” are different from early model iPods. All of my other Apple iPods (previous generation iPods) charge when connected.
I contacted my dealer about this and below was the response.

I JUST GOT THE ANSWER BACK FROM BMW AND OUR SHOP FORMAN...
THE IPOD CLASSIC IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE BMW USB AT ALL...
THE IPOD*NANO SHOULD (DOES) CHARGE.
ALL OTHER IPOD ITEMS DO NOT CHARGE...
THE CAR IS WORKING AS DESIGNED.
AS FOR WHY THEY DO NOT SET UP THE PROGRAMMING TO ALLOW CHARGING OF ALL COMPONENTS OR NONE? I AM NOT SURE.
At this point, I am uncertain as to why or even how BMW could prevent the charging of a specific iPod. I still think it is a pin configuration issue.
Does anyone have the new 160Gb iPod Classic (or newest generation iPod) connected to their 2007 BMW X5 4.8i iPod integration cable? If so, is it charging?
Thank you your time.

tom @ eas 10-24-2007, 12:12 PM The Classic is no different in charging than other iPods, the same charging cable is used even from earlier iPods.
The only "iPod" that differs in charging is the iPhone.
fourperf 10-26-2007, 11:05 AM My ipod charges but when the car is off the ipod is still on. The screen never turns off. Has anyone else had this same experience?
