I am having a problem with my X5, and the dealer cannot tell me what is wrong with it. Every now and then, going around 40-60mpg, with the air conditioning on, the steering wheel starts to slightly shake. After a few minutes, it goes into a full blown spasm, shaking the car back and forth sideways. If I let go of the steering wheel, the car continues to go perfectly straight. If I apply the breaks, it almost feels as though it is applying pressure on and off. After about 3 to 5 min. it goes away. Any ideas?? Help!!!!! Warranty expires in Oct 07

WHen you apply the brakes and the steering wheel shakes, most likely the front rotors are the problem.....if it shakes without touching the brakes, could be wheel balance or suspension.

I had the same problem and the dealership stated that my front caliper locked up. I had to replace the front calipers as well as break pads. The total work was about $1700, but when I got to the dealership one of the service managers checked to see if this work was covered up warranty and it was.
