I'm debating whether or not I should coat my Boostlogic Manifold. What do you guys think? Right now it has a black coating on it that scratches off, but really you aren't even able to see the manifold unless you are looking for it. I talked to Jet Hot and they can do the 2000 degree black coating for $300, or the 1700 degree sterling coating for $270. Is it a good investment, or should I put the money elsewhere?

I'm really curious if anybody had any real world experience, or has seen some sort of performance advantage over coating their manifold.

Thanks guys,
Mike

I can't really offer much help Mike, but the Formula SAE team I was on had the sterling coating done on the headers they made and it looks awesome and appears to be quite durable.

header wrap is cheap and works, and you should get a qoute elsewhere, thats pretty high.

it helped cut down my under hood temps a bit. 300 sounds like a lot. i can't remember what i paid for mine.

go with the 2000 coating.

I coated my turbo header and wrapped all the other pipes with thermal wrap. It lowered the underhood temp by 20-25 degrees (using a thermal probe) and lowered the charge temp by 2-8 degree's. The formula that I am aware of is that for every 10 degree's in charge temp you can add roughly 3% in gross HP.

Jesus $300? www.caswellplating.com order the satin header spray, it has no bake cure time and fully cures on the vehicle... its a true ceramic coat.

They did the work on my snowmobile engine, they are very very good at what they do, and reasonably priced.

I just painted my turbo manifold with VHT ceramic paint. You do have to cure in the oven or BBQ in stages, but it was only $16 for primer (not necessary but helps adhesion) and Flat black. It turned out very nice, time will tell though. My .02

I was just looking into this myself recently and did some searching. One of the most informative threads I found was spooltime's TT 1.5 build thread.

Swain Tech coatings are covered and Techno offers his thoughts as well.

Thanks for the comments guys! At first, I thought that $300 was very pricey too. I'm also going to get my intercooler pipes coated in their sterling finish and that works out to be $105 plus shipping for both pipes. Those pipes will actually be seen by outside eyes. I didn't even think about header wrap. I might look more into that and go that route if it's cheaper. What's the main difference between the satin finish from castwell and the thermal wrap?

I was really pleased with the sterling coating by jet hot. I did the header, WG tube, and turbine housing.

why are you going to coat your ic piping why dont you get that powder coated it will be cheaper, look better, and disapate heat.

I had a set of SBC heads done by them. I highly recomend it, make for a really nice and durable finished product. Mabey some of the others out there are better, but all the spray on ones I've tried fall off in a couple weeks

I love the way it looks too, gives it a nice race look

You want to insulate your IC pipes from underhood radiant heat. Powder coating looks nice but it will still heat soak. After fitting and making my pipes I painted them with high temp silver paint and then wrapped them with header wrap.
