Mechanical
• This M3 has been prepped for track days. Unfortunately, I’ve only had time to do one event at Road America last year – about 250 miles on track with no problems, and one event last week at MAM – again, car ran great, no problems. The suspension is a great compromise between street and track.
o Reliability - The cooling system has been well maintained to ensure proper reliability on track (records available).
The oil pump nut was Loctited and staked on to the oil pump shaft so the gear won’t come loose.
The outer tie-rods were replaced as preventative maintenance to avoid any on-track loss of steering “incidents.”
The front control arms and bushings were also replaced as they are considered a wear item, especially when the car is tracked.
The rear trailing arm bushings were replaced with Delrin bushings.
Performance alignment
Ground Control rear shock mounts (sometimes the stock mounts fail, allowing the shocks to poke through into the trunk, not good – the Ground Control mounts eliminate this potential failure mode)
Niggles
• The car is almost 10 years old. It is rust free. The paint is shiny and I wash and wax it regularly. There is normal stone chip wear on the front bumper cover and behind the wheels – rocks like sticky tires. There are a few blemishes in the paint that I will try to show with pictures – nothing major. The car looks like a well cared for, 10-year old daily driver because it has been well cared for and driven daily- about 10 miles to work, 10 miles back home, 5 days a week. It is certainly not trashed or anything, just the usual wear and tear.
• The shifter sticks in the 5-th gear gate when it is not warmed up and the weather is cold. During the summer it is fine, even when the transmission is cold. This is a common problem with BMWs of this vintage. The spring loaded centering bushing that BMW first used was designed with tolerances that were just a touch tight. This means that when the transmission is cold the bushing can stick, leaving no centering affect for the shift lever. Once the transmission warms up and everything expands, the bushing comes unstuck and works fine. BMW has a kit out that has replacement parts to fix this problem – I have the kit and it will go with the car. Personally, I wouldn’t worry about it unless you ever had to pull the transmission out for some reason as the only way to install the kit is with the transmission out. There is a thread a mile long on Bimmerforums.com about this issue.
• That’s about it for niggles and annoying little stuff. The car runs, shifts, stops, turns and drives great. Clutch is good, no slippage. AC works fine, everything works. Track it, autocross it, drive it to work – gas and go – repeat.
Reason for selling - I want an E36 M3 convertible.
