I have a 2005 X3 3.0L 6 speed with 54000 kms on it (Vin#: WBXPA93415WA31539). When you are slowing down and just before you stop (less than 20km/h) there is a "clunk" from the rear of the vehicle- almost as if it is inside the rear differential and gears are engaging/dis-engaging. You also get the same noise when starting from a stop in 1st gear. The local BMW dealer has been able to duplicate it but cannot determine what it is. Could it be the limited slip components in the rear differential?

Also, it has the renowned "sunroof noises"- rattles when closed and when open as well. It is very annoying to drive on the highway with the sunroof open and you have to have the sunshade closed to keep the sunroof quiet.
This also has been looked at by the local dealer but not resolved.

Also, has anyone found a sunroof wind deflecter that works on the X3. I purchased 1 from Bavarian Autosport but when I install it with the provided hardware the safety on the sunroof trips and reopens the sunroof
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Wayne

replace the sunroof cassette, and then check the condition of the transfercase fluid, a fault should be present in the VTG module for excessive wear.

I had a clunking noise on one of my X5s and aftter a half dozen trips wasted to the dealer, I decided to twist the tailgate bumps stops a turn out and it corrected the the bump noise.
