Why pay Active Autowerkes $10,900 for the same thing....

Dead nuts reliable
Passes TN smog
Dirt cheap

Why is it up for sale?
As I've mentioned before, most of my cars end up following the same mod pattern and I essentially end up with two or more of the same car. That's whats happened here, I have no use for two turbo m3s. So the 'slower' of the two kits is up for sale.

This is going up for sale on ebay in a few days, I thought I'd give BFc first dibs.

So how fast is it?
It's deceptively quick at 'low boost'. While under WOT it doesn't feel like armageddon or anything, it will eat up road with just a small stretch of the toes. Part throttle performance is perhaps the best improvement. No need to downshift, the car just goes. It's almost telepathic.

Heres a short video of 50-90 w/ about 100#s of extra crap in the car (luggage, wheels, etc). It won't mean much to those who don't know the e36 speedo by heart, as the resolution is crappy:
http://www.racefactoryfab.com/bfc/Video.3gp

The car is dead nuts even from about 30-100mph with 'nothing stock but the turbo' Evos. With my friend running almost 25psi/tune/full 3" exhaust no cats/etc, we were literally identical in performance at 5psi (I had a boost leak from earlier off road adventures :)).

What all is included
You'll note that quite a number of pieces are new or nearly new.

- Active Autowerkes 'Stage II' chip for OBD1 413 DMEs
- TD06 14cm^2 internally gated 20G Turbo [new wheels/bearings/seals as of 3,000 miles ago]
- SPA exhaust manifold
- Early Boostlogic motor mount
- 2.5" downpipe w/ cats (allows the car to pass emissions and bolts to stock/aftermarket exhausts...replace with a 3" for a noticeable increase in power)
- 42# 'green top' Ford Motorsport injectors
- Porsche 993TT 3.5" HFM
- OBD2 HFM adapter plug (new)
- VAC Cometic .140" Head Gasket (only been torqued down to 45ft/lbs...never fired up. You can re-use these numerous times)
- ARP Head Studs NEW
- Intercooler w/ brackets
- Bosch BPV
- all necessary charge piping
- all misc hose clamps/hoses/t-bolt clamps/oil feed/ oil drain/etc

But I bet I could build that kit for $74
If you stick around the FI section of the board you'll notice every month or so someone wanders in and bashes various vendors price points and vows to build a low buck, reliable kit. These people either a) vanish off into the distance never to be heard from again, b) go over budget and start a 'big boost' build, or c) blow their cars up.

Active want's $10,900 for this same kit (well with an external wastegate...around $200 to add if you wish) and used kits usually sell for around $5,000 on here. I just would like to see this kit go quickly.

Will it fit my 84 dodge colt
Probably not. The tune is set for a 3.0L OBD1 M3. The DME used is a 413, although if you have a 503(?), the wiring is the same...just pick up a used 'red label' dme for about $100.

The actual hardware will fit any E36M3, however tuning will need to be picked up from AA or elsewhere. Usually around $700 or so.

Why so cheap? I am interested. I can give you 2,000 now and the other 1,500 when my s/c kit sells if need be.

Well I'll gladly take more. I just want it gone quickly so I can focus money/time on other projects. I'd prefer not to do 'payments', but we'll see how things are at the end of the week.

Sorry, I have too many toys as it is :).

Im at work and cannot see the pics so, is the kit still on the car? How many miles on the kit? Did you have any problems with the kit at all? Do you still have the install disc/directions?

How much boost are you running with the kit? Any dyno's or approx. rwhp/rwtq?

Im interested...Thanks

The kit has been removed from the car. If you shot me an email I can send the pics via email if you wish.

As for milage on the kit, that's a bit difficult to pin down. The injectors have about 5k miles on it, the turbo has been rebuilt 3k miles ago with all new seals and turbine wheels, and the intercooler is from a low milage stage II kit (this was my backup intercooler since mine took a beating). The tune, manifold, and charge pipes really don't break so milage isn't important for those items.

Do you still have the install disc/directions?

I do have a copy of the installation instructions in PDF form and I'll gladly walk you through the process over the phone/email. It's really not that hard if you take your time.

I don't have a dyno chart unfortunately, but off the wastegate (7psi) it's around 350whp/tq and at 12psi it should be nearing 400whp from what others have done.

I can tell you that the low end torque is awesome. I installed this after pulling off my CF blower (300whp) and will never run another CF blower. Also I was daily driving my euro s50 swapped car and it made it seem like a 318 :).

how much w/o software?

I'm selling it all as a package and not parting it out. Sorry.

You shouldn't have much trouble selling the software on your own though.

Even though the DME is the same, the tune is going to be off since it is setup for a motor with slightly more displacement, compression, etc. Active does offer a turbo kit which shares the same hardware...but for the 2.5L. I'd suggest getting in touch with them. Even with having to purchase new software, you'll be able to sell the old tune on it's own and still come out well ahead.

Anything in particular you'd like pictures of? Let me know and I'll post/email them.

when did AA start selling kits with a boost logic manifold?

Um where do you see a BL manifold? If you've ever tried swapping turbo manifolds with the motor still in the car, then you'll understand why it was upgraded for future upgrades. The early AA kits were internally gated and the only way to adapt to an external gate was to either run it like a 5bolt housing by drilling through the 'blocked' part of the turbo housing or port the manifold....both of which are a huge pain in the butt.

The SPA manifold has the provision for an external wastegate (just run a block off plate) so swapping to an externally gated setup is cake (no removing the manifold or machining) and I think it's better designed.

wheeee.

^So you can install the manifold+turbo without having to take the engine completely out of the car? Do you just lower the subframe and you have access to it, how did you go about doing it? Thanks

That's correct. However it's a TON easier to do with the head out of the car. It literally takes 10 minutes to install versus a few hours of quarter turns with an 11mm wrench. The head will have to be pulled anyway to swap the headgasket/studs...so I highly suggest making it a weekend project by pulling the head on a Friday morning, taking it to a machine shop that afternoon, and then finishing the install over the weekend. It's really not that hard if you take your time.

The subframe doesn't have to be dropped if you are tapping the pan for the oil drain while on the car. If you need to pull the pan (which i'd suggest so you can secure the oil pump nut and weld a proper bung onto the pan) the subframe will need to be dropped. Then just take the 4 13mm bolts off the motor mount and the 16mm one of the subframe, slide hte manifold on, then the turbo, then finally slap the motor mount back on.

I have some instructions from AA in a pdf file still and will be happy to walk the new owner through the install process.

Oh, that makes a bit more sense :). I'm slow.

The spa manifold places the turbo slighly higher than the AA manifold...so a new mount is needed for proper clearance (although it the stock one can still be used if you want to make things complicated :))
