View Full Version : Got owned by a Trans am but not by much
///Manuel 03-15-2003, 04:27 AM Met the guy at a light, well me no know how to launch so me woosed out. Then I met him again on the highway, he was loaded with 4 big dudes! I was by myself. From 40mph, 2nd gear, go, he gets a little jump about 1/2 car length but I keep up. Getting close to red line ...... need to shift, boom! I fall back 1 car length while he still is in 2nd! Felt like my shift took forever! A couple of seconds after he shifts to 3rd, about dead even, him still ahead about 1 car length.
What do you guys think? His exhaust was really loud.
Ron17 03-15-2003, 08:22 AM LS1 or LT1?
Had to be an LT1... still... no shame in the result.

LT1. If it was an LS1 and the guy had decent driving skills, they can annihilate any E36 M3(that's not blown or turboed).

Oh, I know... but with four people... and maybe he wasn't running all-out. :dunno
///Manuel 03-16-2003, 01:18 AM I don't know American cars very well. The car might have been an automatic tho... I couldn't believe how much longer his 2nd gear was, it just blew my mind how long he held the gear...
///Manuel 03-16-2003, 01:51 AM I think this is what it was. How could I tell what it was easily? He had twin dual pipe exhaust tips and it was loud! I mean really loud. I sounded like a stock geo metro next to it :D

SilverStreak 03-17-2003, 05:28 PM That is a pic of an LS1. Auto or 6 spd, those cars have long legs... no shame in losing to it, even if he had 4 people in the car.
///Manuel 03-17-2003, 09:48 PM Man had I a euro version.... revving up to 8k I would have eaten him! :(
Justin95GSR 03-18-2003, 12:03 AM Nice run dude. That sounds about right too. My buddies TA is only about 2 cars faster than Ron's M3.
SilverStreak 03-18-2003, 09:42 AM The guy doesn't know how to drive, Justin... ;)
Just teasing, Ron... :devillook

It would have been a shame if that was a 350z he was racing......
damn it, spending too much time on this website at work is making me talk shit about my own car, haha
SilverStreak 03-18-2003, 11:10 AM  at mpol99! BimmerForums is addictive, isn't it? Even if you don't own a Bimmer.... :D
My g/f has a Camaro Z28 with the LS1 and that thing is quick as hell. I had no problem staying with a stock MRoadster and outran a CL Type S on the 5 going up to San Fran. It has crappy tires though-all seasons. Coming out of Dodger Stadium, it starting spinning tires of the line when I was making a right with half throttle. I guess I am just used to the lack of bottom end of my car and gave it too much gas. I was actually surprised at the LS1's ability to breathe at higher speeds up the rev band, I was always under the impression that American V8s tend to run out of steam at higher rpms like the old 302 in the Stang GT.

Man, I've been in E36 M3 and OT and Group Purchases too much lately. I've missed this place.
Stirrin' up trouble, huh, Dave? :D
Actually, that guy doesn't, cuz he's only running 13.8s at the track when he should probably be running 13.4/5s with the mods that he has.
SilverStreak 03-18-2003, 06:02 PM LS1's stock should be running low 13's.... ;)
Jed, that was the beauty of the LS1 vs LT1, it pulled hard down low just like the LT1, but keeps on pulling all the way up to redline and with the gearing in those car, triple digit speeds come up all too quickly...

Yes they should.
[dramatic pause]
[extra pause added for effect]
Too bad this guy drives a modded LT1. :D
SilverStreak 03-19-2003, 12:52 PM My old 95 Z28 (LT1) was good for 13.7's at the strip on OEM tires...

Yeah... see. That's what I'm sayin'. This guy has some decent breathing mods on his car and can only get 13.8. His car should be good for about a 13.4, I would think... if not better.
SilverStreak 03-19-2003, 01:00 PM Depends on the track, his tires, air density, etc...
Cannon 03-19-2003, 09:42 PM If you think his second gear lasted a long time, wait until you run an LS1 car. Redline in second gear in a 6-speed LS1 powered f-body is 72 mph. Redline in third is ~103 mph. I can't remember anymore what the higher gears would do.
They do indeed have very long legs, and the LS1 heads are phenominal. They have power everywhere.
Chris
///Manuel 03-20-2003, 12:51 AM Wow that's crazy. I definitely was surprised by that. However, I was glad to be right in his wing. Seems that they have good pick-up (from a roll I always jump about 3/4 car length on S4's thanks to my ltw fly), I didn't expect him to jump on me right off the bat. Then, he never ran out of air in the higher rpm's either.
///Manuel 03-30-2003, 09:53 PM I've seen a few trans-am's without the chicken wire tire of graphics on the tailights. Some have straight horitonzal lines. The one I raced had the chicken wire type of pattern. Does that mean anything?

Not sure about the taillights. My friend has a LS1 and it's strong. Bone stock he was neck and neck with a highly modded S4 when he missed the 3rd gear shift.
He also beat my other friend in his bone stock Supra TT in a roll on race, but then when the Supra went BPU it was opposite..
MisterSLOW 03-30-2003, 11:12 PM You didnt race an LS1.
Phanta-Z 03-31-2003, 11:35 AM Well as an LS1 owner, my inital inclination is to agree with most everyone else and say you likely ran an LT1. But you mentioned there were 4 big fellas in the TA. Now to me big mean means 180+ (considering im 6-2 240). You take 4 guys average say 190 thats 760 lbs. Or minus the driver 570 additional pounds. Thats easily a half second in the 1/4 (probably closer to .7 or .8). Now all of a sudden your light modded M is in the game. All that being said, you may well have raced a heavily weighted LS1. But find one with just a driver and you'll have more than a handful. :devillook . Regardless, if you had fun and nobody got hurt, it was a good race and one worth running. Peace.
///Manuel 03-31-2003, 11:34 PM I am also almost positive it was an auto. So the lights pattern is just different years?
