View Full Version : Grill swap...
Frustrat1on 09-14-2007, 07:16 PM anpmech and I were in another thread and decided to swap grills even... My light for his Black.
I hope he's as happy with the trade as I am! The blacks set the wheels off perfectly...

Lovin it!
RobMCoupe 09-14-2007, 07:39 PM That's nice!!
jbw219 09-15-2007, 02:44 AM Looks good. Do our grills pop out from the front??
PrimalX 09-15-2007, 03:50 AM They sure do. Just grab two of the slats, lift upwards, and tilt forward as if the top were hinged. I also got an excellent suggestion on here to cover the painted area around the grill with painters tape prior to removal to ensure nothing gets scratched.
Veruca 09-15-2007, 12:11 PM Here is a link that shows a diagram:

PrimalX 09-15-2007, 12:50 PM Even better! Thanks Veruca. :)
jarrow 09-15-2007, 01:18 PM Anyone else want to swap? I'm looking for a set of black grills.
Frustrat1on 09-15-2007, 02:59 PM I was crapping myself the first time I did it, in fear...
once done, I just laughed at how easy it was.
BlackSapphireZ 09-16-2007, 01:23 AM i went from black to silver...then i'm like, I like "ALL BLACK" look with my black car and black headlight

Hey
Frustrat1on (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/member.php?u=108571) http://images.bimmerforums.com/vb3images/statusicon/user_offline.gif Here are yours. I like the silver grills with the silver car a little more than the black with the color of my car IMO. Your's looks good and does go good with your wheels.:buttrock
Frustrat1on 09-16-2007, 07:44 PM Yep...
Had I not done the wheels, I would have absolutely left it silver...
JThurman23 09-16-2007, 07:54 PM I have my silver grille up for trade for black as well!! Is there anywhere you can find an ALL black grille with no chrome on the sides? I've looked on ebay 1000 times and nothing comes up!
BlackSapphireZ 09-16-2007, 08:33 PM u just have to paint the chrome
Frustrat1on 09-17-2007, 09:22 AM That's corrrect.
The grills are very easy to use and there is a primer that can be used on plastic after a light course paper rub that will allow you to paint to choice.
If I didn't find this trade, I would have had no problem painting the grills. It's a relatively easy project for anyone even relatively comfortable with paint.
BimmerZealot 09-21-2007, 01:39 AM Front amber reflector needs to GOOOOOOOO =] Looks good.
okdoublek 09-21-2007, 06:52 AM do u guys no where i could get the black grill for 07 z4 3.0si??
cbigbart 09-23-2007, 09:58 PM Did you ever find a source for the black out grilles?
Frustrat1on 09-23-2007, 11:31 PM You can buy em from a few places (including BMW) or very simply Paint yours.
Scuff, plastic prime and paint could be dont VERY easy and had I not traded I would have apainted mine.
JThurman23 09-24-2007, 12:13 AM That's all u have to do to paint the grille? Do they just pop out in the front? I want to get this thing BLACK as soon as I can!

Yes its that easy - I did it this weekend. Took about 4 hours including letting the paint dry and putting them back on.
I lightly sanded them, put two coats of rustoleum primer, 2 coats of flat black, and several coats of clear (only waiting a couple minutes between each coat). Entire painting time took maybe 20-30 minutes.
They literally just pop out - grap the slats with both hands and push down and pull out at the same time. The chrome part separates from the part thats already black so there is no masking or anything involved.
BimmerZealot 09-24-2007, 02:03 AM Besides the UK source of full black out grille replacement I have yet to find any US retailers.
okdoublek 09-24-2007, 08:02 AM will the 06 3.0i grille fit the 2007 3.0si (face lifted)?
i found it for 60 euro (about $84.6) in bmtown.com
they said they could ship to US also.

06 and 07 are both facelifted and are exactly the same.
okdoublek 09-24-2007, 08:43 AM oh then will the non facelifted grille fit the face lifted car?
BlackSapphireZ 09-24-2007, 10:58 AM yes
JThurman23 09-24-2007, 05:21 PM I want to paint the chrome part black as well. Does the grille pop out in one piece? What is the best kind of paint/applications to buy? Is there a certain kind of clear coat you used? Sorry I'm new at the whole painting thing and want to make sure I'm buying the right stuff and painting the grille exactly how it needs to be painted. I appreciate it man.

Has all the information you asked for JThurman23, just need to scroll to the 1st page.
jbw219 09-24-2007, 10:01 PM And to be a little clearer....the primer/black/clear was all rustoleum brand that I picked up at lowes.
JThurman23 09-25-2007, 09:32 PM Can you post up pics JBW?? I'd love to see the outcome and what the grille actually looks like on black. you painted the chrome part of the grille black as well right?
jbw219 09-26-2007, 07:11 PM I'd love to but I can't find the cable that came with my camera. Trust me it looks good - my car is all black.

Roland your car looks good with those Hyperblack CSLs and the black grills. Did you DIY yours or buy them? Should get rid of that front amber reflector.
Roland 10-15-2007, 07:24 PM ...

Thanks! I just got the wheels - they are actually "matte" black - the "hyperblack" ones are really a dark grey color (not true black). These wheels came to me from Tom@EAS already in matte black so I didn't have to paint 'em.
As for the reflectors - agreed. I'll probably do that someday when I add the aero side sills and have the roof panel either painted black to blend in with the black color on the hatchback glass or replaced with the TCK Carbon Fiber roof. Of course, it'll probably be a while for this stuff as there are always other things to do with my money like exhaust and suspension (still stock).
BimmerZealot 10-15-2007, 07:35 PM Oh okay, i always get confused between hyperblack and matte black, either way it looks great =]
Starscream88 10-15-2007, 09:03 PM Got everyones emails (so far) and replied with pics,
Sucks I have to post 15 times to post a pic lol,
What damage can be done with pics :)
BimmerZealot 10-15-2007, 10:29 PM I can think of a few =P
