View Full Version : Viper GTS v. 330i
Stuttgart951 03-14-2003, 09:13 PM Had to run some errands today, so I took off from work around lunch time and my first stop was the bank.
I park, go inside, deposit a few checks, and walk back out. Turn the key, back out, proceed to wait in line to make a right hand turn out of the parking lot.
Minivan, minivan, truck... WTF is that? Low... sliver... huge wing on the rear... Viper.
He rolls past me at about 25 MPH, on the bumper of the truck in front of him... obviously a little peeved that someone a few cars ahead is doing the speed limit - its a single lane road and he cant pass.
The sound as he went by was incredible... just a roar... and he was just maintaining speed.
I pull out behind him, as he's the last car in line, and Im drooling. Now... Ive never had a thing for Vipers, there are a few in my area - an old RT-10 and one that Ive never been able to indentify, but this thing looked plain mean.
Of course my first reaction was "of all days to have the waterpumper in the shop being inspected..." (not that it would have made any difference).
I edge up closer to him to make out the badge... sure enough, underneath a wing that had to be 24 inches above the trunk, it sayd Viper GTS in matching body paint silver.
We make our way behind the construction workers and soccer moms for about 500 yards up to the next light. I need to go straight, but he's turning, and Ive got a feeling hes young enough (30-ish),and annoyed enough by the cars infront of him to put on a show.
I put on my right hand turn signal and ge in behind him. Sure enough, the light turn green and he stomps on it. As good as the V10 sounded at normal speeds, it HOWLED at WOT.
Ive seen very, VERY few cars accelerate like this on did. He was gone... absolutely GONE in seconds. He must have hit 100 MPH by time I hit 60MPH... I was pedelling as fast as I could just so I could keep him in view as long as possible but I might as well have been standing still.
Simply amazing. First GTS Ive seen get on it, and I wasnt disapointed.
extemporia 03-15-2003, 12:18 AM Try it agaings a Corvette Z06, made by a company whos claim to fame is not minivans. The Viper GTS, with optinal $3000 racing stripes, can be spanked by a Corvette any day. My information was obtained via a Motorweek comparison of the Viper GTS and Corvette.
Patrick33 03-15-2003, 12:27 AM but which would YOU rather have?
I've seen plenty of cars that accelerated faster than a GTS.
I was driving home from work one day in the M5 when I encountered a Gemballa. You wanna talk about acceleration, you talk about Porsche tuners like Gemballa and Ruf:)
extemporia 03-15-2003, 01:17 AM i would look soo good sitting in the drivers seat of a z06, but thats just me :)

I have not yet had the pleasure of seeing a RUF or other tuned Porsche accelerate in person... hell, in my area a Maxima is considered a sports car.

And Try a Z06 against a F-50. It can spank a Z06 anyday.:eyes1
Ummmm.. guys. Who said the Viper was stock. The mofo does have an 8L engine. It can pump out ~600-700rwhp NA with some money thrown at it!

No idea what he may or may not have had done to it other than exhaust, but for purposes of comparison, the Viper in the Civic vs. Viper thread in General Discussions looked like a Huffy taking off compared to this thing.
SilverStreak 03-17-2003, 05:33 PM $42K total invested in my car, and I've yet to lose a race to a Z06, 9-0 so far.... :devillook
MMJ4mil 03-18-2003, 12:37 AM damn i wish u had beat the viper
well i guess im not going to be racing a viper anytime soon :P
How off topic can this get?
Nice story.
Is your 330 manual?

Yes. :D
NoSoup4U 03-20-2003, 05:46 PM have you ever had the chance to try the 951 against a rt-10? I think, at least against the pre-2003 ones, do much better than you think. I was trying to get one to give me chance; but, he didn't want to go at it ....
Stuttgart951 03-21-2003, 11:05 PM No I havent. There is an RT-10 in my area, owned by a "roughly" 18-ish year old kid (large inheritance), but Ive never even been going the same direction as him when I see the car.
norman 03-21-2003, 11:21 PM hey why are u selling your 951? thought about getting one for a track car but dont know about the reliablity, any comments
Stuttgart951 03-22-2003, 01:29 PM You wont be disapointed with a 951.
Ultimate track car - reliable as a Honda if you take care of it. If its neglected, its a nightmare.
norman 03-22-2003, 02:59 PM u think a turbo S is worth the extra$ it commands? or would modding a regular a turbo be more sensible since it's going todo mostly track, sorry to hijack your thread
325is Dude 03-22-2003, 04:06 PM 944's are sexy damn cars. Id buy one but the maintence isnt something i like to do. Viper > Corvette. Corvettes are cool and all but there a dime a dozen.
darkesthours 03-22-2003, 09:40 PM Ya corvettes are cool cars, but I was reading in a recent road and track over at Sticky's house (at least that what magazine I think it was) the ZO6 and the GTS were compared and the GTS was better in every aspect. Therefore I will have to agree:
Viper > Corvette

In terms of getting power out of the engine, it doesnt make much difference. The Turbo S blower is capable of only slightly more than the Turbo blower.
But the stiffer suspension, better brakes, and "exclusivity" drive the price of the Turbo S up. If youre going to leave the car stock, the Turbo S is the way to go, but if you plan on stripping the car completely, installing an aftermarket blower and pumbing, suspension, and brakes, youre better off with a "cheaper" 86 as a starting point (86 was the first year in the US and its the lightest of the bunch - the offset is also different in 86 - if you like the look of deep wheels, you can do it with the first generation 951's)
Either way, youre much better off paying for a good example. You can find a $6000 951, but youll put $12,000 into it bringing it up to spec... trust me. Pay now - not later.
Once its sorted out however, you'd be hard pressed to find a car that responds to a road course much better.
norman 03-23-2003, 04:01 PM tough part is to find one around here, even tougher for a unmolested one

What on Earth is this you speak of?
Enough Bench racing already. I know people around my area that have raced both cars in stock form. It's quite simple. The Vipers whips the other cars ass, especially on the top end.
Stock z06 tends to run a 12.2 at 115 with a badass driver. Usually just low 13s though:(
Vipes run 11.8 at 120 with a badass driver. Usually low 12s at 116. Do the math homie. Also, you may want to pay attention to that little thing called a "horsepower rating." The previous Generation Viper's 45hp and 88+ft/lb of torque advantage can account for a lot of that:)
And yes, RUF does OWN!!!
kapolani 03-24-2003, 08:50 AM I drove my buddy's Viper before he dropped 40k on the engine and suspension components. It could haul ass! I seriously doubt a Z06 could of taken his Viper before mods. Now that he's done with the engine it's even meaner.
I think he's pushing close to 800 hp at the wheels.
SilverStreak 03-24-2003, 10:34 AM Z06 vs GTS will be a driver's race.
Antonio 03-24-2003, 03:43 PM Unless it's from a roll;) That extra 5mph the Viper picks up in the quarter mile does wonders for the top end. Also, it will do 193 stock whereas the Z06 runs out of steam at 173.
norman 03-24-2003, 03:50 PM who in the right mind will run pass 150mph??
Antonio 03-24-2003, 04:05 PM Every single person I know that owns a fast car. Also, motorcycles. I used to run up to 175 on a regular basis. Most cars that put serious power to the ground cannot hook up until at least 70mph, so they go from a roll up to whatever speed.
:dunno :dunno :dunno
norman 03-24-2003, 04:28 PM good for u

Who races from a roll in a Z06 or a Viper?
Little girls, maybe... :stickoutt ;)
Antonio 03-24-2003, 06:45 PM Silverstreak......

j/k ;)
I said fast cars, like Single turbo Supras/modded porsche 911turbos/Murcielagos/Vipers w/built motors and nitrous/motorcycles
:)
SilverStreak 03-25-2003, 10:46 AM Again, though, why do all that to your car and then not have the sack to race from a dead stop? If you're afraid of breaking a nail, why mod your car to those extents?
Antonio 03-25-2003, 01:36 PM I have never owned one of these cars, so I'm not exactly sure. I can tell you that the cars are usually on drag radials at the very most and those tend to be lit up through 4th gear. So basically a 12 second car would be able to keep up with a low 10 second car from a dead stop, but once traction is gained the race is all over. Many of these guys do go from a dead dig, but when they only want to see what how the cars match up*rather than driver* they go from say a 65-175 pull.
SilverStreak 03-25-2003, 01:46 PM Still, not an accurate measure of how cars compare to run from a roll, that's what trap speeds on the timeslips are for....
New cadilac sixteen. Detroit show. Comming out in 200X. 1,000HP 16 cyl. will kill anyone on the road anytime.
325is Dude 03-27-2003, 09:47 PM The caddilac 16 also is a fucking boat and wont beat shit. 1200hp supra or 1000hp caddy that weighs about 75% more than the supra.
