Hi Guys,
first of all I am a noob so please please, no flaming...i have taken all the steps to avoid all the usual noob forum pitfalls, so have that in mind. I recently upgraded from a 93 beat up honda civic that the club civic forums helped me maintain, till it was totalled in an accident, to a 2000 540I/6 (pics attached). Its a great car and i havent regreted this buy since i picked it up from NY and drove it 900 miles to columbus Ohio. Also got a sweet deal too...under 12.5K, with 108000 miles brand new clutch, water pump and maintenance records. The guy who sold it too was pretty cool...you could tell he loved the car. Thanks to the forums, i figured out several things like the outside temp sensor location and what the deal is with that and all other miscellaneous things, than new E39 owners should look out for. i have wanted this car for a while and although i always wanted black, the color i got is growing on me and not a lot of pple have it. However i do have some questions that the forum searches haven't really addressed. so here they go in no particular order.

1.) the current wheels have some bad curb rash adn scrapes even though its not very apparent in the pics. I like them, but also like the M5 and M parallel rims. I live in ohio and we do get a fair share of snow. Not sure if i should get winter tires sometime this month for the current rims, then over the winter save to get new M-rims and tires for spring/summer (want to stay stock with 17" so let me know if you have a set to get rid of). Do most people have 2 sets of tires? its kinda expensive now but is it worth it in the long run really? and for anyone living in ohio or in the area will some good all seasons do the trick?

2.) Whats the deal with the headlights. I want the 2001 and up style headlights, and i want it to be as stock as possible. I saw different postings about fake xenons and all other kinds of variations. is there just a plug and play i can buy, unplug the old one replace the new one with real genuine xenon lights that have the same performance as stock or better? i have seen some how to's on here but it seemed like too much stuff going on to try to make it fit.

3.) What about the exhaust. I'd like something that performs as good or better than stock, but thats not obnoxiously loud, and looks good. I like the double exhaust tip look. Are there any plug and play mufflers anyone will recommend?

4.)The light on the dash that shows i guess when to take the engine for servicing...how accurate is that? i am down to the last 2 lights, teh car seems fine to me. i am trying to find a BMW mechanic that is honest and good and will not rip me off like a dealer. So any recomomendations around columbus will help...but do i have to worry about that right away?

5.) I also seem to be getting the check coolant often and that scares the shit out of me. i have topped it 2 times in a month...once when i got it, and once yesterday..is that normal. sometimes it comes up when i park on a slope, but i had to top it off yesterday. it never comes on while i am driving. just when i turn the car off, the obc shows check coolant level. the little red thing that floats confuses me a little. i dont know if its at full level when its all sticking out over the opening of the radiator or if its full when the tip is level, but not sticking out.

6.)one day i noticed the floor on teh rear passenger side was wet. came on here searched around and found a couple of likely things. it hasnt happened again since and its been 2.5 weeks and we've had rain since so im just hoping maybe that was a mishap and i left the door open without realizing it or something....

I will stop here for now. any help or input will be helpful. I am feeling there are other pple out here lurking like me who have some questions about their new cars so maybe this will help others too. And the sticky note about helpful E39 links has really good info. that guy Dan whoever he is knows his stuff...apparently he's banned...hmmm...weird for such a great contributor.

PS: I guess i cant post images because im new :-( so i'll have to upload pics later.

Congrats and welocme!!!

Hmm.... maybe you should post s'more, so we can see her.
I'm no expert, but here's my two cents... :)

1. I have bad road rash on my wheels too. I only have one set of tires, and I'm up here by Chicago... My 528 sport was slippin and slidin in the snow last winter, so maybe snow tires aint a bad idea... ;)

2. What kind of lights do you have now? My 2000 528 has stock Xenons.
Do you want angel eyes? :ponder

3. Exhaust??? I have no idea.. :(

4. Hmm... did you have her looked at before you bought her?
Yeah, try and find a mech and have her looked at.. Maybe change some fluids and such... :az

5. Cooling systems..... Grrrrrrr!!!! :mad
Get ready to overhaul it.... I just had to get mine done... glad I had ALOT of help!!! :buttrock

6. Wet mats?? Hmm.... where was it wet? By the door, in the middle? I don't know what that can be...

Enjoy her and be good to her!!!

Let's start at the end: The wet mats might be your vapor barrier coming loose at the bottom. (several discussions on the board about that) It is an easy, no cost fix.
It might be a good idea to fix those things you have to fix and then start looking at the nice to haves.
Get a pressure test done on your cooling system. Make sure you have the right antifreeze mixture and look for the tell tale signs of of water leaks. If you have the BMW antifreeze you will see light green deposits where it leaks. I have a 530I so it is not a one to one comparison, but I top up my coolant about every six months. My 528I about once a year.

Welcome and good luck

2. if you want angel eyes, you could either go with the umnitza p39's or stock ones. Stock (last time i checked) was around $1,000+ for xenon. Neither is a true plug-n-play if you do not have xenons now.

3. if you want a little sound and a nice look, magnaflow might be what you want. if your looking for preformance, dinan, SuperSprint, Eisenmann and more will be what your looking at.

4. hopefully your talking about the oil service bar lights, and not the CEL. When those bars get red BMW wants you to go to the dealer and do an oil change. Many people on here do it before those lights go red. If you already did an oil change or can DIY, Bavarian Auto sells a tool to reset it if you have a pre-2001 OBC. And finding yourself a good indy is a great idea, or you could be like me and have a cousin that works for a BMW dealer :)

5. Has your radiator been replaced yet? Do you have the original service records? If it has not been replaced yet.. you might want to start by doing a search on here for zionsville.

6. see what chet said :)

yup, i believe its the change oil light. the problem is the oil was changed not that long ago, so i would imagine it should have more than two bars left till red. If i am not mistaken it was changed less than 2 months ago.. just before i got it. And it should have at least 8k miles left on the mobil synthetic oil used if i am not mistaken ( i think it said change between 10-15K). I will check the records to make sure when it was changed..

and oh yeah i do have xenons now, its just not angel eyes... still waiting for admin to let me post pics...i may have to go thread whore to get to the right number of posts to do that but i was hoping to avoid that. pics coming soon...thanks for the input guys

PS> these pics were from the seller. I have since had it waxed, and i need to get some stuff from autogeek to make sure the seats stay in good condition. I think previous owner used auto wash at car wash, but i have heard thats not the best route...i washed it at my friends house in the suburbs, but damn it took like 2 hours to wash, claybar,dry,wax...whew...i know i wont be doing that in like a month once this weather changes for the worse

i believe it's Anthracite metallic. It looks light bluish to me...although most pple insist on calling it silver and the lady at the BMV registered the color as Teal:confused. i have seen i think a 530 with the same color, but dont know much about its history or how common it is..headlight pics coming..

Nice car! I'm jealous of you having NAV! :mad :stickoutt
Anyhoo.. I don't have M Pars or M5 rims, but I do have a set of 17" TSW Kyalami's in HyperBlack that would make nice "winter wheels".

The tires especially the rears will need replacement in a few miles, fronts are ok. I would be willing to trade for your stock 17" Style 32's. We could meet somewhere, switch wheels and we drive back to our respective homes!.:) Any closeup pics of your stock rims, the curb rash, etc? Here are some pics of mine with the 17" TSW Kyalami's in Hyper Black:
