View Full Version : p39 hiccups

So this weekend I got my new p39s from umnitza. I quickly got frustrated with the lack of extra wire in the existing wire setup, so I made a nice harness for both sides, giving me plenty of slack for an easier install. i did what brandon and mookish told me, tapped the blue/gray on passenger side and the light green/gray on the driver's side (and of course the grounds).

i checked and doubled checked all my connections, then turned them on. The AE's had some trouble - on the driver's side, one of the AE's didnt work at all, and on the passenger side, both AE's were on and getting power, but one was at full strength, while the other was kind of flickering weakly.

I inspected my connections again, then noticed an odd sound coming from inside the headlight housing itself on the driver's side. I pulled off the larger rubber boot, and one of the black plastic connectors on the white wires for the AE's was smoking - obviously not a good thing (I of course turned it off and disconnected). I then spoke with matt from umnitza, and after some discussion i decided to re-wire both pairs of the AE connections inside the headlight. I did, and afterward everything looked PERFECT on the driver's side. by the way, i am totally in love with the way these things look.

Anyway, hoping to remedy the weak flicker on the passenger side, I performed the same fix: I re-wired the connections for the AE's. The problem is, after doing so, there was absolutely no difference. I plan on speaking with matt again tomorrow, I think he had something in mind for me to try to fix it. In any case, all this took me forever. hopefully matt will be able to help me out and I can fix this myself, or i can get a replacement quickly.

i tried to take some pics during the process-

When i first turned it on - the driver's side:

And the passenger side:

The fixed driver's side AE. it was night by the time i finished:

unfortunately, the passenger side remains the same as before.

They look great, Hoss! :buttrock. I wish I could help with the angel eye re-wire, but I have no experience doing so. Hopefully Matt will be able to get ya going.....sounds like a bad connection tho.....:az

thanks! i dont know what it could be. its definitely not the same connection issue as it was with the driver's side one.

i will wait to call matt tomorrow at a decent hour since he and you are 3 hrs behind.

at the moment, it just looks kind of stupid with one side of the AEs perfect, the other partially out. its like my car is running around at night with an eyepatch.

I had a similar problem and one whole headlights anel eyes quit and I got a replacment balllast from matt and It worked great after I plugged it in!

You may want to pop the ballast (little black box) inside the headlight open and check to be sure that both of the white wire plugs are seated fully.

Good Luck matt will take care of you!

You should rewire them to make the highbeam ones brighter than the low beams, kinda' like the newer BMW's. :stickoutt Seriously, though, Matt should get that fixed for you. And when you're done and I get mine, you can help me, we're both in Atlanta! :)

Happy to have helped you. next time, email us first, I'm sure it's just a little wiring.

When they leave here, they are fully working and perfect. Sometimes, the issues during shipments are hard to overcome sometimes they are easy, but no light leaves here without a perfectly working lighting ensemble (rings, turn, high, and low).
