I can't really speak to the longevity of the V8 powered E38 but If it has been taken care of by the previous owner(s) meaning it was serviced on a regular basis and repairs did not go unattended to for long periods of time, you should be in good shape. I put an average of 10-11K miles a year so I'm hoping to get another 40-50K trouble free (:D) miles. Apparently when the speedo isn't working the odometer isn't working.
