I have for sale one of my spare heads for my race car. Here's the description:

Start with VAC stage 3 ($3500 + core = ~$4000) add the following:

Upgrades:
- fresh proper race valve job (5 angle using Serdi) VALUE $2600 retail

- Ferea valve train upgrade (VAC does not use these on their Stage 3 heads - ask me how I know). I installed Ti retainers, dual matched valve springs new lifters, etc) $1600 retail

I have over $8 k in this head with the above work and every bit new. I have used the head 1 time. Total of less than 2 hours on the head.

It is for sale for $3500 plus shipping from Southern California.

FYI, all the head work on this head was done by an x-BMW Formula 1 engine builder! It is as good as you are going to see this side of the atlantic.

Thanks - YES!! Something even crazier!! Custom cams, big porting, some amazing valves, etc, etc - much lighter wallet.

Should be fun!!

How much would this thing be to ship to PA? I might have cracked my head last week so I may need to buy a new head. May be interested..

jdholder

Don't know exactly - but I would split shipping with you and cap your exposure to $40 to ship it. So if it cost over $80, I would pay the difference.

What's the max safe rev limit on this head?

jdholder
09-19-2007, 01:41 AM
Safe rev limit is completely CAM dependent. The head is newly rebuilt however, and I felt (along with my engineer) to spin my motor to 7500 with the stock M3 cams.

Brad @ evosport
09-19-2007, 01:46 AM
As jon stated, it is about the cam. We have cams that we can sell that will allow you to rev to 8700 without danger with this head, BTW. (Yes with Hydro lifters).

Thanks

So this will fit S52 motor? I have a 97 M3 with S50 manifold and obdI, and my next step is race head and shrick cams. Will this work? How well will it work with a set of Shrick cams. Sorry for all the questions...very interested.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, this will work on an S52 motor. It will work fine with a set of Schrick cams. I have run Schricks with this head, and it currently has M3 Cams (S52) in it now.

What would you consider the safe rev limit with Schrick cams?

I don't like Schrick Cams. I think their profile stinks and is too pointy to be a good cam for high RPM application. With that in mind, I would say that I wouldn't want to spin ANY head much past 7k with Schrick cams in it.

Now, a cam that has a better profile, like the ones evosport has been developing for me? I would spin them all day long to 7500. Maybe even 7800 with a little more data.

My question is though, why do you want to spin an S50 or S52 that high? The head runs out of steam and really starts not flowing well way up there.

In the context of high level autocross in the almost unlimited SCCA Street Mod class, the E36 M3 is a proven winner. Many national class winners have gone for boost (mostly supercharged, one turbo), so head flow at high rpms is not a huge handicap.

An advantage for the class winner with an S54 swap into the E36 is their ability to out rev the S52/50 and remain in the power and a higher speed without the shifting downtime of 2nd to 3rd gear and back to 2nd for each of the corners.

In my case the previous owner installed Schrick cams & my present budget doesn't make sense to replace them with Sunbelt or Evosport cams.

I had a mild port and polish done to mine when we built my head. Mine has all Ferrea components and oversized valves. I rev to 7800 with stock cams.

This head looks like it's similar.

I would feel so much better reving to that number with stock M3 cams!! I just wouldn't want to do it with Schricks - sorry. :(

Whats the difference with between this vac stg. 3 head and one I would buy from vac? I see that you changed out the valve components. Why did choose to change them from the ones vac provides with the stg. 3 head? The heads come with titanium retainers and dual spring upgrades already.

I think I answered this in the description. VAC did not use Ferea Valves or valve train in the Stage 3 Head I purchased. They used an inferior brand that did not live up the the rigors of race use. I had to replace everything in the head with all new components.
