Does anyone know if it is possible to replace the battery in the key for an E38 2001 ? (Remote does not work in the spare key but the other one is OK). Of course BMW say you can't, - just replace it at great expense. So if there is a way I'm sure this is the place to find it.
Thanks.

I think that if you start using the spare key in the ignition it will charge the battery itself.

Ditto...have you tried recharging it? The owners manual states that you should use the spare key at least once per year for an extended period to keep it charged.
See the paragraph directly below the yellow highlighted text in image below from the owners manual. (once again proving that the owners manual is FULL of indespensible information) :D If you don't have an owners manual...you can download one from www.e38.org ...look at the bottom of the left column. :)

Hmm. I'd think it would be cheaper to just use your spare key once in a while & never have to actually buy & replace the battery. I switch mine (keys) every once in a while.

Thanks alanuk400 & Qsilver7, I have read the manual & driven over 1500 Kms. with this key & it made no difference, so I assume the battery has failed. I am sorry to have put you to the trouble, - I should have been more detailed with my question. Hopefully, others may get some benefit from this.
It looks like I will have to buy a new one from BMW if I want to have a full functioning spare key.
I have only had the car for 3 months, - (2001 735 Highline), and I think that the previous owner probably had the spare key in his top drawer for 6 years !
Thanks again all.
