I have an '03 X5 4.6is. It has the 20" wheels with a staggered front to back. The fronts are 275/40ZR20 and the rears are 315/35ZR20 (big tires!).
The tires were new when I bought the vehicle used one year ago. They are Toyos. I have put about 10,000 miles on the vehicle since I got it. Recently I have been experiencing excessive tire noise and some feathering of the tread blocks.
Has anyone else had this problem? Any recommendations for other brands of tires that have not had this problem?
Apparently the OEM tire is Michelin 4 x 4 Diamaris. The dealer told me that those tires have not had these noise problems.
Any words of experience would be great.
Thanks!

No experience with the feathering problem...sounds like alignment issues. However, I have found that these HUGE tires do get noisy after that many miles.

That's BS. They just want to sell you some new Michelins at $350 a pop. I had the same exact setup on my X5 and they were loud after about 10K, and I also have the Diamaris on my Cayenne (275/40R20 all around)--after about 15K miles these ones are getting pretty loud, too...
My advice, FWIW, is to get the alignment checked for the feathering issue and roll up the windows to keep out the noise!:)

i think the toyos would be noisier than the michelins for sure.
michelins are pretty good when it comes to road noise on their more expensive tires.
that's not to say they won't get noisy, i just think it won't be as bad as the toyos.

If the front outside edges are feathering, it's probably nothing to worry about. But they do get noisey after 10k.

I've never had a set of Toyos this wide, but my experience with 235/40R17's on my 3-series says there is little difference between Toyo and Michelin with their PERFORMANCE models (all season or regular passenger tires may be different). The reason any tire gets loud is pure physics. As the tire ages and wears, the tread pattern gets uneven. The wider the tire, the more contact that uneven pattern has with the road....hence the louder the noise.
