We are taking my in-laws to LA-X on Sunday. They are heading back to Brazil and they are loaded down! Electronics are VERY expensive in Brazil due to their screwed up economic (lack of) system. So they are taking home all kinds of goodies. One is a dishwasher.

I'm not too worried about the metal bowing down/in but rather properly securing these items. I have tons of towing and hauling experience and just sold my Chevy :mad. Can I trust those black runners on the top to be a safe secure point for a 60lb boxed dishwasher and maybe a large suitcase.

I'm going to wratchet it all down.

IIRC, BMW "recommends" something like 160lbs with the cross rails installed. That should mean that you are probably OK up to that amount with just the roof rails, but I would not try to rest anything heavy directly on them. If you are resting the items directly on the roof of the vehicle and using the roof rails as tie down points, I'd fear for the paint on your roof, but the rails should be fine!!! :)

And a dishwasher that only weighs 60lbs?!? what does it hold...like one place setting?

Don't put anything directly on the roof!!!

Are you mental?? You need the cross rails in order to load anything on the roof. If you wanted to be really redneck about it, you could probably get some 2x4's and put them down between the roof rails and put the dishwasher on top of them and them tie it down. That's IF the dishwasher is really only 60 lbs and IF you have absolutely no other way of getting it to its destination.

I'd put the dishwaher in the cargo area (if it's only 60lbs, it'll fit) and put the luggage on the roof.
