View Full Version : Couple quick sport seat and wheel gap questions
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 02:48 PM Couple quick questions for ya guys.
1) How do you extend the thigh support on the sport seat? I'm probably just an idiot, but how do you do it?! On my E30 there was a little lever, IIRC.
2) Why do I still have such huge front wheel gap 4 weeks after installing my H&R Sport/Koni adjustable suspension? It looks better than stock but not nearly as low as I'd like. What could it be?

Its the big "A"
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 03:12 PM D'oh! That's the one switch I'm missing! It fell inside the little memory button compartment sometime before I owned it. Ahahahahahaha.
Thanks, dude. And now, to locate that switch. :shifty

At what? The awesome disarray of my car?
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 03:21 PM And wtfz, I never knew that the reverse mirror tilt-down functionality was controlled by the "driver's side changeover switch." Glad to know it's not a broken mirror/internal switch. Man, I'm like a little kid in a candy store, still discovering the things my 12-year-old sports family sedan can do. Anyone else feel like they're in the same boat (pun, err, unintended)?
well now I wasnt gonna say that:D
:stickoutt naw dude its all cool im just in a good mood today and messin around. My car was in some shape of a heap, but I worked long and hard to get it where it is now. Im shure youre doing the same. Besides youve got one up on me: Youve got the i6, mines an iA. But atleast I can eat a cheese burger while turning:cheeburga

Yes, my car is still a heap... hopefully for not much longer, though.
And who wants to eat a cheeseburger while driving a BMW? :nono Blasphemy.

I must admit, we sort of do...these are no M3s.

lol, well I was hungry that one day. Realy though I just wanted an excuse to use that smillie:buttrock

ya, I guess. But I test drove an '03 M3 the other day on the highway and it didnt seam any faster at high speeds than my car. But getting off the line was tight

Ah, gotcha. It's actually sort of nice not having cupholders and no real pockets to put papers, etc. It encourages one to just drive and be one with the car. On the other hand, it's also a real PITA to do anything American--get take-out, fast food, etc., read newspaper while commuting to work, store your life story (and legal briefs) in the side pockets, etc.

Yeah, well our cars have more torque than an E46 M3 but are about 50 hp deficient and 400 lbs. heavier. :( And they're geared much more to racing/low-speed pulls than to the highway; our cars are the opposite. Still, I've heard that an E39 540i/6, with 25 ft. lbs. more of torque than our E34s--and, in the case of 97-98s, 15-20 more bhp--can keep up with or beat an E46 M3 stock for stock on the highway. Since our E34s can keep up with all 540's except for strong 97-98s (non-VANOS and underrated from the factory), we should be almost the same.
Still, there's no doubt about it: the E46 will simply destroy us in the twisties, stock for stock.

Yeah.....
its a pitty I couldnt experience that. The car dealer guy wouldve killed me.

Yeah, because he sure doesn't absolutely rape people for a living... :D
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 03:51 PM BTW, I found the switch! It was in the little compartment down there...probably being eaten alive by a pack of angry mice. Anyway, it worked and now a whole new pandora's box is opened...well, there's a whole bunch of nasty crap in the crease. I should take a picture for comedic value.
What about the wheel gap?

cool.
2) maybe you didnt put the right spacers or springs in to get the desired lowering height
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 04:12 PM 2) maybe you didnt put the right spacers or springs in to get the desired lowering height
Well, I did use OEM 9mm upper spring pads instead of the 3mm I later found were recommended. Damn...and disassembling it all now to change that would be a huge PITA. But should 6mm of lowering, or 0.236220472 inch, make that much of a difference?
not all springs will lower the cars to you desired height. H&R springs are only supposed to lower the car 1.3 front and .75 in the rear. Our cars have a 5 inch cap in the front stock :stickoutt... If you wanted more of a drop, you should have chosen a different set up.
jcbe34 has the Lowtec 60/30mm w/ 3mm front pads... just the springs alone is 2.3 inches.plus the pads is going to lower the front over an inch more than yours.
I'm in the same boat.. I'm changing springs next time I need shocks.

What do you have right now? Your wheel gap is much less than mine in front. Like MUCH worse. I could measure it or take a pic. In fact, I probably will take a pic to show you what I'm talking about.
My car frankly looks just the same as it did with the sagging M-technic suspension before I replaced it. I hate the wheel gap! It actually looked better with the sagging suspension before... :rolleyes
I really should have put 3mm pads. Would that have made a noticeable difference? I suppose it's too late, though. :(
my sig is pchopped... (shh)
the pads would not be noticeably different.

:lol
That makes me feel better, about the pads.
As for the wheel gap, is there anything I can do to lower it further? I was under the impression that H&R Sport and Koni adjustable was a great, sporty, low (as in the car would be lower) combination. That's what I've read. But my car sits right outside my office window, and as I look at it, I cannot help but be drawn to the huge front wheel gap. It's much worse than in the back.
Did I possibly do something wrong when installing the fronts?
:lol

what more answers do you need? You need a new set up.
DaveCN 09-04-2007, 07:16 PM Back on the thigh support topic - should that switch be on both the driver and passenger seats?
I ask because my seats are actually swapped from a UK spec (RHD) M5 and my "passenger" seat (was the driver seat in its original home) has the thigh switch, but my driver seat does not.
Anyone?????

It should be on any and all sport seats with the memory adjustment. Just a logical deduction. ;)

I dont know about sports seats, but my regulars seats, the driver only has memory settings. but both have the same controls otherwise
maybe your car ate itself like Ohnoe's
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 07:26 PM Ok guys, here's my wheel gap in front:

Rear wheel gap, for comparison purposes; notice how much lower it sits:

Looks terrible. :(

Only the Right side seat has the memory buttons - I'll have to check out the "self-cannibalization" theory next time I get in the car.
Are you saying the rear looks lower than the front?
because unless you rake the car, it's always going to be like this. the front fender is shaped differently than the rear fender.
Ok guys, here's my wheel gap in front:
looks terrible. :(
hmm, maybe just get a fat guy to sit on it
btw, thats the first pics ive seen of your car. looks pretty good from what i can tell

why not just switch the seats? Im firls confident theyre the same base mount-wise. Only concern is if you have the rare sort seats with the armrests.....then it would be goofy.
MaloventEvil 09-04-2007, 07:38 PM both seats on my 540 have it; i'm pretty sure both are supposed to.

+1, but on the + side, it always looks like you're accelerating, and the torque is making the rear squat :D

thats it. My car has permanent torque! Eat that M3 and Honda S2000's!:alright
shelbyz4u2nv 09-04-2007, 08:42 PM to tell you the truth the gap isn't THAT bad...you will have to do a different setup though if you want it to be any lower...car looks good btw, first pics ive seen of it
Just get bigger wheels!!!!!!
4500 RPM 09-04-2007, 08:46 PM For as much as you don't like it, the car looks good.
The ASAs aren't bad at all.
ohnoes 09-04-2007, 09:56 PM Thanks for the compliments on the car, guys. It looks decent, but needs work.
Are you guys positive that's how an H&R Sport is supposed to look? That totally sucks. E30s and E36s look a lot lower with the same suspension. What's up with that? My E30 325iS had H&R Sport/Bilstein tourings on it and had almost no wheel gap. I've even seen E38s with H&R/Bilstein that are a low lower. And I don't think bigger wheels would lessen the wheel gap, would they? Tire diameter has to remain the same.
My car still looks like a pseudo-4x4... why would the spring manufs make it such that you need coilovers to make it look decent?
If I have a fat person sit on it, will it settle a bit? :D
SC David 09-05-2007, 12:18 AM Give it some time. It took about 6 months for my setup to fully settle. It will also make a slight difference what setting your Koni's are on. Full soft will sit a tad lower. I think the main thing is the tires your running. If you get a little more rubber on those wheels, they will fill out the fenders better.
Besides all this, I think the car looks good as is. I could see you saying it has room to improve, but it's nothing to complain about. At least it has a manual and not the engine of an E30 :(

Thanks for the encouraging words, David. In what ways do you think I could improve the car's looks, besides the obvious shadowline?
And how much can I expect the front end to settle? This wheel gap is something I notice every time I see it, and I don't think it should be that way with H&R Sports... maybe I'm just OCD. :D

Gee Robert.... Ya think???????
Those are my old wheels and I only see the wheel rash on one of them - a rear I think.
If you go to 18" wheels/tires set up and go 3+ then the wheel wells will fill up. However - there are many many many more issues that we need to take care of BEFORE you worry about Shadowline; CAI; Exhaust; and Bling type of things for the car. Lets get it sorted first. Once the car is completely sorted then you can start to think about the appearance items etc........
Hope this note keeps your focus on track and reminds you of the Discipline thing Lee talked to you about- See you over here Saturday - JT
