View Full Version : E34 body trim questions
Bradams540 09-04-2007, 05:11 AM Did my '94 540 come with the "M-tech" body kit? I have seen pics of a few cars with it and I can't tell a difference between their lower trim and mine. If it didn't come with it, what are the differences between mine and the M-tech? I am trying to find side skirts and rear bumper trim I like that will match my Reiger front lip/splitter I am currently running.
Pics of the car in question:
pic of front bumper with reiger lip and splitter (it has been painted to match since this was taken)

BTW, anybody know an easy way to remove that small dent in the front door underneath the trim (factory jack shifted while changing tires)
Side and rear (led tails have been removed due to poor quality)

Antrieb 09-05-2007, 01:43 PM Looks like a previous owner fitted m5 or '95 side skirts and an m5 rear bumper. Front was stock before the lip.
Bradams540 09-05-2007, 03:23 PM Sweet. Thanks for the info. Now one more question, what does this "M-TECH" body kit look like? I have heard people talk about it. People sell them on here. I have seen them up close off of a car, but I have never seen a good pic of it up close or in detail on a car.

kesslerbmw 09-05-2007, 07:03 PM More pics of the rear bumper please.. Something looks different.. Maybe just the angles of the pics.
Analog 09-05-2007, 08:44 PM Something about that rear looks higher than the usual M5 rear bumper....

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I asked for more pictures..
It looks good, but Im thinking its not an OEM M5 rear cover.
Russellc 09-05-2007, 08:56 PM Paintless dent removal process such as provided by Dent Wizard may be able to help you. They took a big dent out of my rear side door for about $80.

I dont see any diffs here between the photos and mine? Where are you seeing the discrepancies? - JT

Sweet, I will have to try that, the dent in the pass. door is really annoying. I did it whe jacking up the car on wet asphalt. This was before I realized that there was a small wheel chock mounted in the trunk right underneath the jack. That would have actually prevented the mishap all together. Oh well, live and learn.
P.S.- How do I go about quoting multiple people in the same posting. I tried the "multiquote" to no avail... As you can see, I had to just type in the quotes above myself...

Once you do the multiquote thing, hit post reply, and it'll pull up your reply box with the multiple quotes in there. Also, you can use this feature over several pages in the same thread. So you could start on page one, and click multi-quote on page 1, 3 and 10, and reply on 14, and all would come up. Very cool.
kahluastud412 09-06-2007, 07:32 PM what kind of rear spoiler is that?

It looked like it didn't hang low enough in teh first set of pics... I guess it is an M5 cover.
atl530i 09-06-2007, 07:47 PM That car looks good.

Aaahhhh, I see now. Very sweet.:buttrock:urtheman Thanks for the tip... Soooooo, much better than the way I was doing it...lol.
what kind of rear spoiler is that?
I have no idea what any of the body trim is on this car except for the Reiger front lip spoiler and splitter. Everything else was already there when I bought it. The spoiler look like a factory job. There is even a spacer on either side of the trunk lid that matches up perfectly with the spoiler to make it look more like a flush mount when closed. I thought it was factory until I started looking on here.
That car looks good.
Thank you. I still want to find out what the differences are between the M5 side skirts and rear valance I have now and the M-technic. Does it hang lower, look taller (thicker top to bottom), etc. I love the look of the reiger front lip and splitter combo personally, I just want something to make the side and rear match it's ground clearance.
Holy crap. Shows how observant I am. I just found the "more" button for the smilies.....some of those are awesome....lol.
Goat128 09-06-2007, 08:26 PM like antrieb said it looks like m-tech sides and rear (same as m5 afaik). gamite's front bumper is not technically the same as m-tech, its a bmw add-on piece (the rest of his is mtech).
kesslerbmw 09-07-2007, 12:04 AM I think thee M-tech piece hangs slightly lower than the M5 piece. It at least appears that way. There isn't a much that will hang lower than what you've got that is still tasteful. Lower it and I think you'll be happy with it. It doesn't look nearly as good sitting as high as it does.

As far as lowering it, In the first set of pics at the top of the page, the car is lowered. It is sitting on Bilstein Sports shocks and Eibach Pro Kit springs. It did lower the car a bit from the "stock" (read: 13 year old factory suspension) but it still isn't as low as I would like it to be. The second set of pics were mostly taken before I changed any of my suspension. I was hoping the rear would come down so the tire would be into the fender a little more and I wanted the front to come down to just above the tire (no gap). It looks better than stock, but still not where I want it. Having said that, I don't know if I would like it if it were any stiffer. It still has a nice relatively comfortable ride and it handles like a dream in the twisties. All in all, I like it, I guess I will just have to stay with the M-tech trim on the sides and rear...:stickoutt
kesslerbmw 09-07-2007, 12:38 AM Sounds good, but you've got M5 stuff, not M tech...
Heres the M-Tech rear add on.

Antrieb 09-07-2007, 12:38 AM From what I understand, there is a difference between the m-tech front bumpers and m5 bumpers.
I believe this is an m-tech bumper. Same as Gamite has.

4500 RPM 09-07-2007, 02:05 AM Where can I buy the MTech rear add-on? It seems like it would cover up where my bumper is broken...
My bumper is f'ed up from the left exhaust tip to 4" past. All under the cutline, if you know what I mean...

My mistake, M5 trim.... Gotcha... The M-technic doesn't look so different from the M5 add on. Seems to be straighter up and down. Doesn't curve underneath the car so much before the lower lip. It is hard to tell if it hangs lower from the pics though. I like it. I think I want it. It would be great to get to see it side by side with mine though before making a decision/purchase. Thank you guys very much for the pics and info. At least I know (sort of) what is on my car now.
Now for the spoiler...M5 or what??? All of this stuff was on the car when I purchased it.... I feel like a total noob again, having to ask other enthusiast what equipment I have on my car.:help.......LOL.
4500 RPM 09-07-2007, 02:46 AM You're lucky as hell to get a car with that stuff on. I will say that you unfortunately don't have the brake ducts that came stock on your car.
Bradams540 09-07-2007, 02:38 PM Now that I know what I have, I completely agree. I always just thought that the way my car looked was the way the 540i came..... Wait......Whaaaaaat. The ducts came stock on my car :banghead:.... I have wanted those from the first time I saw them. I still want them even though I have the reiger. I would like to incorporate them into the lower lip spoiler above the splitter.:thinkerg
Another question, door beside the drivers side fog light. Is mine supposed to have a large hole in that cover for the alternator cooling duct???:ponder

Are those actually LED Tails or just a version of the Euro Crystal Clears? I see a yellow bulb in the turn signal socket. - JT

They are real LED tails. Only the turn signal and reverse light are incandescent. They are also the only removable lights. All of the LEDs are permanent.
