As a minor upgrade I'd like to pick a better set of bulbs for my e36.

What are my choices like?

Sylvania silverstars or Osram's

I always used silverstars. Long lasting and good output.

I had PIAA's extreme white's I bought from turner motorsports in my e30 M3 and I absolutely loved them.... but that was before HID's came out.......

PIAA hands down, amazing light output and very good life.

I've got Silverstar Ultra's in my stockers right now, not too shabby for halogen lighting...

I just changed out the stock headlight, front turn signals and fog lights to Sylvania Silverstars. I love them. Great output and really made a difference for me.

Silverstar even makes a chrome looking bulb for those of us with clear or smoked corners. They light up amber, but fade away into the background when not on. Really looks good IMO.

I heard Osram Silverstars had better output without a blue coating.. so I bought em. But honestly, anything less than HIDs is pretty crappy.

Don't do Silverstars. I had them and they burned out in a month and a half. They are good though. Luckily I bout a second set!

But go for Hella Xenon Blue's. They are just about as white as you can get. I put in the Hellas in one side and left my Silverstars on the other and the Silverstars are noticeably yellower, and that was during the day.

6 months in mine and so far so good (Osram)

I believe stock headlamps take 9005 & 9006. My vote goes to 9011 & 9012 Toshiba HIRs. With a little trimming of the clips, these will fit 9005 & 9006 housings.

What is the advantage of using that bulb? Is it a higher wattage?

ive had my silverstars for about half a year now. they are a great color. and cheap. you will definitely notice. i think they are like $40 at autozone. only problem is, you wont see a great difference in output area, just makes what was already lit up, brighter.
