If so, I am trying to see if i can get interest from some of the local peeps to have chris (dr.vanos) come down from TX and do a mass install (I'm trying to see if I can make it worth his while).

for info/reviews on the unit:
http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=822044
and
www.drvanos.com

I hear it does wonders for any of us that might have worn/noisy vanos units...:buttrock Post on here if you would be interested in having this done and maybe i can coordinate a date to have him do this for us..

Jon,

I'm a "maybe", depending on timing. Sorry I can't give a full committal at this point.

Do you have to take the cams out ton replace the vanos? If so, you might find a few people with m50 engines that want m3 cams installed to add to the list.

no, you dont have to take the cams out, however, im trying to convince him to put my cams in. Hopefully more expensive jobs like that will convince him to come down. Right now, he wants a minimum of 4-5 people for him to make the trip down.

add your name to the list. Once i have a list compiled, I will propose some spots that will be a compromise for all interested (to be fair). I wont speculate on the location until i find out who/where the interested parties are/coming from. FOr example, if 4 out of 5 people are from naples, then naples will be the location. If we are scattered around south FL, then we will pick a spot that works for all of us and allows chris a good spot for a vacation when hes done working :buttrock.

Where would this take place.... also I'm too lazy to read the entire 80pg thread. I have a '94 325i with 150k miles. Basically between 1000-3000ish RPM there is a lack of power, I.E.: If i floor it it will accelerate and around 3k just take off and when I'm at idle I have that annoying tin can/marbles/diesel engine sound. The VANOS causes that problem, no?

Im either going to run the schricks or the sunbelts; im still undecided at this point. I Just got the car back from the bodyshop and it looks amazing; just in time for this amazing weather we're having :(:help. I'm not very pleased with the fitment of the vorsteiner hood, but they told me they would take care of it when the "new version" comes out. I'd really like to keep this limited to the vanos kits, and maybe one or two sets of cams. Swapping 24 retainers is an all day deal.

Looks like were getting close to 5 people. You guys who are just wanting the stage I should think about the stage II... Much nicer kit, it will last longer, run smoother and is only $120 more.

I understand, I think Im just trying to get out of doing this myself :( . My Vanos isn't makig any noises (yet), but in your experience should I takle the retainers before I do anything else, its a 95 with 94k on the clock.

ceegeezM3
10-04-2007, 02:42 PM

Definitely!

Regardless of cams, the stage II has several nice upgrades that just makes the vanos work better and last a lot longer, so any engine will benefit from it.

I usually recommend the stage II if you are going to do cams because you have to take all that stuff off anyway, so you might as well upgrade it while you're in there... but that doesn't mean that you can't benefit if you have stock cams.

should I takle the retainers before I do anything else, its a 95 with 94k on the clock.

With that many miles, I wouldn't worry about it. If you track the car a lot and have schrick cams, then yes, I would upgrade... but if it's just a daily driver there's no reason to upgrade now.

Wow.

Love the drvanos site.. it's great you've got a video to confirm the noise I've been hearing is my vanos unit taking a dump.

Lately it's been rattling pretty bad in between shifts.. and now I'm hearing a worn bearing kinda sound on the highway.. not to mention it seems there are times my power is kinda poopy :( like it is working most the time, but sometimes it's not.

Chris, I seen you rent out the special tools.. are they often available for rental? Are they also the tools needed to swap out cams too while at it.. in case I get ahold of S50 cams and wanna put them in whilst I replace the vanos?

If you were closer, I'd get in on this deal myself.. but goin clear down there is just too much of of a trip.

Great thread!

I'm not sure. "VANOS noise" only at idle, if I turn off the A/c (blower motor draws alot of power), headlamps & radio the noise basically goes away the RPMS don't drop at all. I know the belts are cracked...

What would be the price for the kit if you come down, but dont install the kit, if we get the 6 people?
I would like to know just encase I cannot get my car running in time.

what is the price without install on the group buy for Stage II w/ Sunbelt cams. My engine is being worked on now and I'm interested since it is apart to perhaps take care of this at the same time... I never noticed noise, but I'm at 140k miles and if this helps with the sunbelt cams then I am in.

hey chris, i was discussing this with pat (renegade bmw here on the forums). He is an experienced wrench and was discussing with him that I was going to be doing this.

Regarding how the vanos works, he was saying that it was like v-tec (on at high rpm off at low rpm) whereas, i alwasy thought it varies the intake cam throughout the entire rpm range.

HE also said that if the vanos isnt workign properly, itll throw a CEL. I always thought that the vanos could become sluggish over time and even the solenoid can go bad w/o throwing a CEL.

Does the vanos get progressively bad over time, or is it one of those things thats either working, or not working? BAsically his advice to me was to leave it alone unless i can definitely diagnose it as a problem.

Can I have your thoughts on those points please? Im still in for the GB regardless.

ceegeezM3

Regarding how the vanos works, he was saying that it was like v-tec (on at high rpm off at low rpm) whereas, i alwasy thought it varies the intake cam throughout the entire rpm range.

Well, you're actually both wrong. :D

The vanos advances the intake cam at low rpms (when under load, and other specific conditions are met... but not by just revving the engine), and stays advanced until 4-5k rpm, then it retards back to it's normal position.

Advancing the intake cam at low rpm helps fill the cylinders more efficiently by creating some valve overlap, so the exhaust gases rushing out will actually help pull the intake charge into the cylinders = more low rpm power. This is why a failing vanos kills your low end torque. If it doesn't advance the intake cam, you get a pittance of air/fuel and the engine bogs down until 4k or so, and then it pulls like a mother to red line because the engine now has serious air velocity going on. At high rpm's you no longer need (or want) that kind of valve overlap, so it retards the intake cam back to the normal position.

The vanos can fail for a couple of reasons, but usually the oil seals shrink up and you don't get enough oil pressure behind the vanos piston to fully advance the cam, or the piston seizes up (due to metal on metal contact) and does nothing when the DME tries to advance it.

Since there are literally 4 or 5 things that can go wrong with a vanos, you may or may not get a CEL. Typically you never get a CEL and you don't even notice the loss of low end torque because you've become used to it or attribute it to something else in the engine. I've also seen cases where the vanos would only randomly work, and sometimes you'd have all kinds of low end torque and other times it would just bog.

I can't tell you how many customers have said their car feels noticeably quicker with a fresh vanos installed, even though they initially bought it to cure the rattle... especially now that most people are hitting the 100k mile mark on these cars.

Keep in mind that the rattling does not always mean a failing vanos, and vice-versa, but if the car has a ton of miles I can almost guarantee that the vanos is not operating at 100%, whether it rattles or not. It's got moving parts, and it can definitely wear out.

As old as these cars are now, they can all benefit from a new vanos, even without the rattle. The seals are what goes bad and causes the poor performance issues.

01-26-2008, 01:33 PM
Haha, yes... let's try again.

Are the single vanos vehicles (1998 528i) as likely to fail as the double vanos?

Well, they don't fail so much as they just become less effective. The dual vanos units are obviously affected more by the worn seals and therefore shows more obvious symptoms like stalling and power hiccups. The single vanos doesn't seem to do this nearly as bad, but it is a noticeable difference once you get a fresh vanos in there with new seals.

So to try and answer your question, neither vanos completely fails... the seals just harden over time and cause the vanos to do funny things. The single vanos is less affected because it has 1/4 the number of seals as the dual vanos, so I guess you could say it's not quite as noticeable with those cars.

Ahhh... very nice and thank you very much. Appreciate the response. I thought I had read or heard somewhere that single vanos systems weren't as bad.

My 106k 528i seems to perform smoothly and quietly throughout the acceleration curve. I don't notice any unevenness, hiccups or choking.

Is there a way to measureably determine the improvement or know what the difference would be once completed if you don't notice any symptoms upfront?

Wish I had known of this before I replaced water pump, thermostat (which had just fallen apart) and some hoses, pulley / tensioner, etc. over the last year.

I didn't replace the fan and shroud so maybe if I go in to have that done the Vanos work would be a good idea at that time. Assuming I can find an indy to do it!

Thanks again.
